I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Laurie Loewenstein Moyer and Nina Solomon, my first readers, who gave me more time, kindness, and encouragement than a writer has any right to expect.

Megan Thompson and Larry Kirshbaum saw a rough manuscript and understood how to organize it and shape it as only true aficionados with a vision could, and for that they have my eternal thanks.

I have the best editor, Henry Ferris, who took it a step further and “cleared the excess furniture out of the overfurnished room.”

For their help with research on the life of James Jones, I am indebted to Thomas J. Wood, archivist, Special Collections, University of Illinois at Springfield; Robert Taylor, archivist, Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin; and J. Michael Lennon, PhD, Norman Mailer biographer and bibliographer.

For generously sharing their memories and knowledge of my parents' life and times, I wish to thank Cecile Bazelon; Helen Howe; Doug Lawhead; Don Sackrider; Kate Mosolino Sotiridy; Kathy Stillwell; Joan Mosolino Wall; and Kathryn Weissberger. Ray Elliott, USMC, ret., graciously helped me with issues of war and warfare.

David Andreas, Anna Bahceci, Cecile Bazelon, Meg Bennett, Tom Borthwick, Dan Burda, George Krzyminski, Kathy Stillwell, Barbara Taylor, Theasa Tuohy, and Renette Zimmerly volunteered as readers and gave me invaluable feedback.

I must especially thank Susan Cheever, the first and the bravest of “the second generation,” who suggested this book was a memoir and taught me by example not to be afraid.

Love and thanks to Julia Murphy for sharing her profound wisdom and kindness.

Lastly, this book would not have been possible without Kevin and Eyrna Heisler, who waited every day, with good humor and aplomb, for me to return to them from the great distances I traveled.
