She did not seem in the least impressed by my defence of her former self.  Indeed she even seemed irritated.  To her, Maria was simply weak and she did not need to be defended.

“What happened to Maria after her parents had disappeared?” I asked although I was not sure that I wanted to hear the answer.

Mateo arrived that day and Maria was dragged before him.  She stood there, eyes towards the floor as he walked around her, running his fingers through her hair and then over her breasts.  He took delight in his power when Maria did not move.  He told her that he would take her to his room after he had eaten, to have ‘some fun’ with her.  Maria was forced to stand there obediently while he finished every last morsel.  The men
who kidnapped her
and the women who kept house all knew what she was waiting for, yet
still
she
had to stand
there in silence.

Mateo was not like the others.  He was more sophisticated than the mountain-men who had performed the kidnapping.
He would bark out an order and it was obeyed instantly.
He was in charge of the mansion and everybody else worked for him.

He stood up, grabbed Maria by the wrist and led her to his room in another part of the house.  The servants bowed their heads as she walked past; they had witnessed this kind of
abuse
before.  Maria just followed him like a lamb to the slaughter!”

Lamia was once again becoming annoyed by the actions of her former self.  I froze as I heard the door rattle.

“Don’t worry, they’re just checking it’s still locked as well as trying to frighten us.  We won’t be disturbed until dawn.”

“Lamia, you mustn’t blame Maria.  She must have been terrified!  There was nothing she could have done but
to
follow Mateo.”

“And let him do
all those
things to her?”

“She must have known she was going to be raped, but there was no way out.  She had no friends there and her
father
’s last words were that she should do anything to survive.”

Lamia snorted at my explanation.  She was not going to forgive Maria that easily.

“She wasn’t forced to do anything!  She obeyed his every command!  She raised her arms as he pulled off her top.  Just stood there
while his lips roamed her body, sucking at her nipples as he groped her breasts.

She r
emained
there dis
passionately when he kissed her
.  W
hen he stood naked in front of her and forced her to her knees, she didn’t know what she was supposed to do.
She drew back when the slippery end of his rampant cock brushed her cheek.
Then she got a stinging slap across the face which
sent
her sprawling
across
the
floor
.  She returned to her knees and learnt very quickly of her duties
, as he forced it between her lips and almost down her throat
.  Then another slap because he felt her teeth
, the only way she could stop it from choking her
.  She meekly removed her shorts when told to do so and
, after
he
painfully forced his finger inside
her
she got another slap for being dry
.  These were all things that she took to be her failings instead of his.  When he penetrated her
he was like a wild animal.
There was no gentleness; just powerful thrusts as he rammed
in and out of her dry little hole

I
t was so painful that she cried out, which
fortunately
he took as a compliment.  Even afterwards when she had to walk past everybody on her way back to her room in tears, she was still blaming herself!”

It is common for victims to feel that way,” I said.  “Physical abuse can often leave the victim feeling dirty or unworthy.”

“She chose to be a victim!  I would never have done that!”

I wondered what Lamia thought Maria could have done.  The sheer horror of the things she had witnessed, coupled with the physical abuse and no chance of escape, left Maria with little choice.  If she resisted, she would simply endure more pain with the same outcome.  Yet I knew that Lamia was Maria and that she had done something to turn around events.
I had to go on listening to find out what and how.

”Was that the end of it then?  Did he only want her for a time and then let her go?” I asked hopefully.

“No, there was no way he was going to let her go.  After a few sessions, Maria quickly learnt how to live with the least pain.  She worked out how to pleasure him.  She kept some petroleum jelly she
had
discovered in one of the bathrooms, and made sure she was never again dry when he sent for her.  Instead of standing like a statue when he kissed her, she often kissed him first.  She fed his ego by telling him how she looked forward to
visiting his room
and
she
forced herself to make the right noises when he touched her.”

“Do these things make her weak or strong?” I asked.  “Surely she was making the best out of a bad situation; causing herself the least pain
.”

“Maria was weak!  Mateo was a
powerful
man and she didn’t have the strength to live up to him!  She acted like a whipped dog, willing to please, instead of a willing companion.”

These last comments shocked
me
.  Lamia appeared to admire Mateo!  Was she defending the man who had caused her all that pain?

“I don’t understand.  You say that he was powerful, but anybody can be powerful when he has the physical strength to overcome a young woman.”

“Power has nothing to do with physical strength.
Have you ever seen a person walk into a room and everyone turns to look at them in silence?  Power is often misinterpreted.
When two powerful people engage, the battle comprises of each one willingly relinquishing power for a time, until a conclusion is arrived at.”

I did not understand any of this!  Lamia was Maria, but when did the name change occur and why did she despise Maria so much?

“So how long did this arrangement last between Maria and Mateo?”

“After a week or so, he had Maria moved to a room nearer his.  She had access to all of the house because there was never any chance of escape.
There were always guards at the gate and even one in a wooden tower, making sure that nobody was trying to scale the high walls.
Five men (presumably bodyguards) kept Mateo company and travelled with him when he had to go away.

Maria
kept
Mateo
satisfied whenever he called on her and nobody else would dare to touch her until he was finished with her.  However, she still tried to avoid the men who had kidnapped her, especially Pablo, the leader and his two close associates, Cesar and Leandro.
She could feel their eyes roaming her body every time they were close.  They even made it clear that Mateo would eventually get fed-up of her and that
then
she could move down with them to the mountain-men quarters; a long wooden building away from the main house.  She shuddered as she thought of the other creature who lived there.  They called him
La Bestia because he was huge and powerful with an IQ of about sixty.  He would leer at her through broken, rotting teeth, sending shivers of fear through her body.  He was more animal than human and Maria’s greatest fear was being in a room alone with him.

Maria should have heeded these warnings and found a way to keep Mateo
for herself
.”

“But she was doing everything in her power.  Didn’t she try her hardest to please him?”
I asked.

“He didn’t need another slave.  He could pick up one of them anywhere.  What Maria needed to do was try to be his equal, to work at staying alive because she wouldn’t last long
if Pablo and his crew got hold of her.  Then came the time when her old room was once again occupied.  A local girl, younger even than Maria was being led
from there
to his room by Mateo.  She struggled and Maria could hear the slaps as he dragged her down the corridor.”

“So she was the one
who was going to replace Maria,

I said.

“Of course, so Maria should have started thinking about how to get rid of her.  Instead, she befriended her!”

W
ell they were both in the same boat
, so it’s natural for them to be friends.”

Lamia sighed as though she were trying to explain something to a child who simply did not understand.

“There are two women and only one place.  Maria was compliant and eager to please; a state all
the girls
ended up in.  The other girl (whom she later learned was called Lina) was younger, newer and fun to tame.  The loser moves into the mountain-men
’s
quarters.
  Now do you understand?”

I finally understood the situation but I could not see a solution.
Maria was in a dreadful position and
I
could see no way out for her.

“Well short of killing the girl, I can’t see any solution,” I said.  “What did happen between these two women?”

Lamia raised her eyebrows as if she had considered
the
killing
of
the girl to be a viable option.

“She waited until she heard Lina leave Mateo’s room in tears.  Then she took some balm she had made from a few herbs she
had
picked in the extensive gardens, and went to Lina’s room.

She found Lina sobbing on her bed and the first thing she did was to calm her down.
Lina gripped tightly to Maria for several minutes before she was convinced to lay flat and relax.  Maria let her know that she understood every feeling that Lina was feeling.  She treated a cut on her lip and a few abrasions and then told her that she needed to treat the part where he had hurt her most.  She was a little nervous but Maria finally convinced her it would be all right.  She got some water and bathed her little hole with its swollen lips.  Then she applied some balm, feeling the muscles spasm as she rubbed it inside.  She did all this for a girl whose very presence could seal her fate!”

“Yes, but that’s what Maria did; she healed people,” I said, still trying to defend my friend against herself.

“How very noble,” replied Lamia in derision.  “She even told her how to avoid being hurt as much.  It was almost as if she was trying to seal both their fates!”

“Did Maria ever ask about her parents?” I asked, curious that Lamia had never mentioned them.

“When she asked the first time she was told to forget them.  She asked a second time and she got a slap.  Then foolishly she pursued the matter, thinking that because Mateo’s colleagues were sitting at the table, ready for
a
meeting to begin, he would simply tell her whether
her parents
were alive or dead.”

“I take it this didn’t happen.”

“Maria didn’t understand powerful men.  He was not
like a bad husband who wanted to hide the fact that he beat
his wife.  Mateo made the rules so there was nobody to judge anything he did.  He took Maria by the wrist and threw her over the back of an armchair.  Then he picked up a riding crop, pulled down her shorts in front of everyone and proceeded to thrash her until she screamed for mercy.  She then had to stay in that position until the meeting was over
, the purple
weals
on her buttocks plain for all to see.  Cesar scurried past, only to return
quickly with Pablo and Leandro.  They
lingered in a doorway smirking, where
Pablo would occasionally grab the meat in his jeans, when he thought that only Maria could see him.”
