About me

Every author feels like they have to write a small part of their lives in their books, it’s pretty orthodox, well not me…. Ok I’m just joking around. I have a few minutes so I’ll tell you a small fragment of my crazy life. It all started when I was on Mars
. Again I’m joking of course. I know this is unprofessional and that’s why I’m going to stop and get serious. There’s really nothing to tell really. My name is Jephte, its French so don’t mind it, its pronounce Jeffte, like you saying Dante but with Jeff instead of Dan. Blame my father for it, don’t ask me. I grew up in Haiti and moved to Connecticut when I was twelve; speak no English, none so ever. I know right, imagine what I had to go through trying to make friends or talk to girls. If I had to write a book about my life, which I hope I can one day, you would think my life was a work of fiction. Anyway, I’ve always had a liking for telling stories since I was a child in Haiti, and it continued throughout living to the U.S.  I didn’t really get serious about it until I left high school. I was in an uproar on what to do with my life and that’s when the thought came to me, write a book. Long story short, it took me five years to actually finish this to where I want it to be. Now that it’s finally done I thought I would share it with the world, or the universe, whichever. Hey you never know, a hundred years from now we’ll live on Mars and my book will be read from a different planet… Ok, this was longer than I thought and I’m done.... Cool.

People that tolerate me. Well, God is the first one. My parents: I don’t know how they put up with me. My four little sisters that I love very much: Rebecca, Naphtali, Charlene, and
Jose. My godfather who I love, Tiano, thank you. My three good friends, Darnel, Nicole and Marjorie. Thank you Shannon, thank you. Love you guys. All my friends back home in Haiti, in Connecticut, and everyone else who helped through this journey we call life. Thank you everyone who helped me along the way. Oh by the way, I’m not a writer; I’m just a guy with a story.

Prologue

Th

man grabbed her quickly and tightly. His grip was firm around her neck, Sonia chocked for air.  Her feet were dangling from the ground, she struggled to break free, but her mind would not permit her to do so. Her body was paralyzed; she felt a dread like one she’d never felt before.

“Do you know who I am?” asked the man holding her neck. His
hollow voice
whispered raspy and evil “My name is Aleister.”

Her very soul felt as if it left her body. The fire emitting from her hand was fading away; she couldn’t see his face very clearly.

Chapter 1

The Awakening

A
s
Albedo rested his head on the desk for a quick nap, it was clear that the teacher’s lesson was beginning to bore him. Listening to her teaching was torment; it was something about the way she taught that was tedious. Her dull voice no longer echoed in his ears as he slowly drifted to sleep. It wasn’t out of disrespect that he slept on her lessons. They were just not euphoric enough to capture his attention.  It’s was the way she paused for five seconds between

sentences. Even the words coming out of her mouth wanted to drop dead.

Once Albedo was fast asleep, the dream came to him like it always does. He could see a man walking. There was something unorthodox about this man that brought a familiar feeling to him. It was as if he met this man before. His presence felt close, as if this man knew Albedo was watching him. Albedo stared into his eyes, and saw that the right one was red and the left was blue. His long white hair touched his back. Of course a man with blue and red eyes was not abnormal in the world Albedo lived in. Nacune was the world of Vampires and humans.

The strange wore no smile on his face; only an angry look that would give any man
fears.

Behind the man with the blue and red eye was a small town, one Albedo had never seen before. He could see flames rising from it, and he knew the town was burning. The screams of innocent men and women echoed in Albedo’s ear as if he was there in person. They agonized and taunted him. The man with the blue and red eye had the power to stop it and to save innocent lives, but for some reason he chose not to.
Now he was getting further away from the town, ignoring their screams. Out of anger and frustration Albedo shouted, “What are you waiting for? Hurry up and go to them!”

Albedo was startled out of his sleep by the teacher’s voice, only to find her a few feet away.

“Wake up or I’ll let your father know exactly what you do all day,” Mrs. Marty said. She was a stick-thin woman, frail even. Her cheeks were puckered hollow.

He woke up with a bitter taste in his mouth. He wiped the drool off his chin as the other students stared at him. The stares did not bother him. It was the dream that perplexed him. He looked at his hands and realized they were shaking.
I know this was only a dream, but it felt so real, like always
.

The classroom had thirty students; five rows and six aisles. Albedo sat on the right side of the second row. To the right of the class was a big window where
he had the perfect view of the moon. It was still early dawn. The candles had been lit and flickering all morning. The sun always took its time before showing itself.

Albedo
took a moment to get himself together and looked at Mrs. Marty, who made her way toward his desk. She carried a ruler in her left hand. Albedo knew he was in trouble again. The other students kept quiet. They remembered what happened the last time Mrs. Marty punished a student for being late one minute late. During that punishment, one of the students chuckled and somehow Mrs. Marty had heard it. She had ears like a bat. Mrs. Marty asked him to come to the front of the room. Marlin was his name, and she punished him three times harder. If Marlin had kept his chuckle to himself, he would not have been punished. Albedo felt awful for him while the other students laughed to themselves.

Now Mrs. Marty slowly made her way to Albedo. It seemed like she took an
hour to reach him. This woman is slow. Everything about her was tedious; they way she talked, moved, and taught, even they way she ate.

“Mr. Albedo, how many times will you sleep in my class?” she asked. “How many times must I punish you?” Her face was enraged. The vein on her forehead did not help the wrinkles around her mouth. She sighed deeply. Punishment did not work on Albedo. All she could do was send him home.

“There was no need for me to listen to your lesson,” Albedo said. “I’ve already learned all you can teach me.”

She was now infuriated. She was angry with his lack of participation in class and his disrespectful habit of sleeping on her lessons. The others wanted to laugh as Albedo continued to mock her.

“If you know everything, then tell me what we have been discussing for the past few days. Why is the moon red?” She pointed outside and Albedo gazed at the moon.

His fascination was drawn to the bright red color. The moon showed the way in the depth of night when the shadows outside made him petrified.   Mrs. Marty tapped her feet, saying she was waiting for an answer from him now. He looked at her with a smile.

“If you must know, it happened a
long time ago during the blood-war, between the Purebloods’ vampires and us, the humans. During that period of time, its color changed to blood red. The Purebloods’ vampires were no longer affected by the sun.  The moon had given them a new source of power. As a result we lost the war and our population declined dramatically.”

Albedo didn’t know too much about the Purebloods, he only knew they were stronger than vampires.

He stopped for a second to gather his thoughts. It always excited him to talk about them.

Most humans were afraid of them, but Albedo had a different concept. Albedo continued before Mrs. Marty could stop him.

“The Purebloods no longer needed our blood for survival. The blood-rain was enough to satisfy their thirst. The moon is now known as the blood-moon. What remained of our people was spared and sent to live here in a small portion of this kingdom, Atnius. Our area is known as Inferno.”

Albedo could have continued for hours if he was allowed too.  He knew more about vampires than any human should. Teaching about vampires and Purebloods was kept to a minimum. His father had taught him everything he needed to know about the world. A powerful king known as Victor was the king of Atnius. Inferno was located within Atnius and made up of four hemispherical parts: south, north, west and east Inferno. Albedo and his small town lived in the south. No vampires or Purebloods were allowed to enter Inferno, unless that is, with the permission from the King himself. And he very rarely allowed his men to enter Inferno.

Mrs. Marty gave Albedo an unpleasant look. “You need to stop sleeping in my class, Mr. Albedo. I don’t know who’s been teaching you about vampires and Purebloods, but they need to stop.”

Albedo watched her tiny legs walk to the front of the room. She continued on with her lesson. A few minutes passed and all the students went outside for a break. Albedo wasn’t too joyful about recess. He was an outcast. As he made his way to the playground, someone shoved his shoulder and
he stumbled for a second.

Gregory
, thought Albedo.

He was a bully. His hair was as red as the freckles on his face. His gang was standing right beside him.   His intensions were clear.

“So you still like blood-suckers, huh, Albedo?” asked Gregory. He was taller than Albedo.

Albedo knew he was referring to the vampires and Purebloods.

Gregory started to laugh, and his gang laughed with him. Another kid came up behind Albedo and knocked his books to the ground. Another one pushed him.

“What do you want from me, Gregory? Don’t you have better stuff to do besides harassing me?”

Gregory ordered his gang to start beating him up. Albedo didn’t fight back. It wasn’t that he couldn’t. He knew that people like Gregory would never leave you alone if you gave them what they wanted. He fought Gregory before. He won some and lost some. Gregory had allied himself with bullies throughout the school to make people continue fearing him.
