“Until then, though, fill me in. What’s up with that geek you used to hang with back when we were texting. Samuel, was it? And how about Daniel?”

“Daniel’s gone. He ran away.” I shrugged, as if he were old news. “But Samuel’s my new BFF.”

“You have a guy for a BFF? Isn’t that weird?”

“A little. But you’ll have to meet him. Then you’ll understand.”

“Can’t wait.”

I teased her. “Maybe I should keep him away. After all, you did already poach Brent.”

Maddie leaned forward, nearly painting my nose with red nail polish. “I thought this Samuel guy was just a friend.”

“He is. He is. Don’t go getting your panties in a twist.”

She grinned and capped the polish. “I’ll see about that. Now I
have
to meet him. If a geek can catch your eye, you’ve really changed.”

I thought about Samuel, and Daniel, and Angelo. And then I thought about all the things To-Do already had scheduled in his little Troll body for me to accomplish. Turning Samuel into boyfriend material would probably qualify as the easiest on the list. “I didn’t say he’s caught my eye.” Exactly. “But you know what the biggest thing living in Salem has taught me?”

“Never count out the geek?” Maddie teased.

I looked around at my room, the room I thought I’d never ever think of as home. “Things change. Sometimes when you least expect it. And almost never the way you were planning for.”

About the Author

Kelly McClymer
was born in South Carolina, but crossed the Mason-Dixon Line to live in Delaware at age six. After one short stint living in South Carolina during junior high, she has remained above the Line, and now lives in Maine with her husband and three children.

Writing has been Kelly’s passion since her sixth grade essay on how not to bake bread earned her an A+. After cleaning up the bread dough that oozed onto the floor, she gave up bread making for good and turned to writing as a creative outlet. A graduate of the University of Delaware (English major, of course), she spends her days writing and teaching writing. Her most recent novels include
The Salem Witch Tryouts, Competition’s a Witch,
and
Getting to Third Date,
which is part of the Simon Pulse Romantic Comedy line.
