oday, we would know that Michael’s mother suffered from Alzheimer’s, a devastating and heartbreaking illness. But it was not until 1906, when Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German neurologist, performed an autopsy on the brain of a woman named Hannah who had died after years of experiencing severe memory problems and confusion that the disease began to get attention. His discovery of abnormalities in the brain led to further research, although it was Hannah’s own descendents who provided much of our understanding of Alzheimer’s.
Because I long for happy endings, dear readers, rest assured that Michael did not inherit the genetic disposition toward Alzheimer’s from his mother, and he will forever remember his Kate.
LORRAINE HEATH always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. In 1990, she read a romance novel and became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She’s been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA’s RITA®, a HOLT medallion, and a
Romantic Times
Career Achievement Award. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including
USA Today
, Waldenbooks, and most recently, the
New York Times
.
