“She’d become attached to Tim when he founded his group here in Rhode Island. She funded his parish with Frankie’s money, and slowly became unhinged when Tim didn’t return her love. That’s where you came in, Vin.”

I shook my head and insisted, “I did nothing to encourage Tim and wasn’t even aware of him until I saved his life.”

Lola chuckled and Aaron said, “One of the people Marion had assigned to put Tim out of his misery struck him from behind and sent him into the reservoir to drown. If you hadn’t been there, he’d be dead now. She ordered his death again and again, becoming more desperate as time went on, and he didn’t die, which culminated in today’s actions.”

“All I know is that she’s out of her mind, had a gun on us, and was determined to kill us both. We were supposed to go for a ride and that would have ended in our murders.”

Aaron snickered and said, “Jordan had removed the bullets from her gun. There was no chance she could have killed anyone. We had been watching the restaurant for some time, thinking we’d catch Frankie or one of his pals doing something we could use in order to find out where Slaggard was being held.”

I shook my head and said, “Nice to know now, but it was scary while she waved it around with Annie Oakley flair. Good grief.” I gulped the remainder of my wine, began to clear the table, and told Aaron and Lola to relax.

Chatting amiably, they ambled into the living room and assumed their usual places. I snickered and questioned that if I’d moved the furniture around, or if I got rid of their favorite seats, would they be confused?

A while later, Lola had gone home, Aaron and I were sitting in front of the fireplace when he said softly, “I’d like to think we’ll become more than friends, Vinnie.”

I’d always said if Marcus wasn’t in the picture that Aaron would have topped my wish list. Reluctant to give my heart away any time soon, I thought for a moment and turned to stare at him. He smiled, leaned toward me and kissed me soundly. The feel of his lips sent my temperature soaring, hiked my pulse, and left me considering endless possibilities.
