He claps his hands together with a smile.

So what time do we need to be ready?

I sigh in relief. The last thing I want to do is go into detail about Cody.

Luke set the reservation up for eight, that way we have enough time to get some things done,

I answer.

Kinsey starts cleaning up the kitchen.

I

m dying for some chicken french! Kyle, you have to try it,

Kinsey advises.

He laughs.

That

s definitely my favorite.

Okay, so Kinsey, you start here in the kitchen. I have paper for wrapping the breakable stuff over there, and Kyle, you can start in the living room. I

m going to conquer my room and then the den,

I direct.

I walk over to my stereo system and crank up the sound on 105.9. This is what I listened to growing up. We had a house off the beach when I was younger. During spring breaks and summers, the beach would be packed with tourists and vacationers; Myrtle Beach was always like that. I was only allowed on the beach during the down seasons. Luke didn

t feel comfortable with me out there in the midst of strangers. I couldn

t blame him, so I never argued.

On the off seasons, I would take my Walkman down to the beach with me, crank it loud, and watch the waves beat against the shore. It was healing and a good sort of therapy for me. Now, I can

t wait to get away from this beach. It has too many memories from my childhood. I

m sick of them. I want to forget them.

We stay on schedule most of the day. It

s now six thirty, and I stop to look around. I no longer see a home; I see walls and piles of boxes. I nod in satisfaction. Kinsey went home to change, and I jump in the shower.

Hands begin lathering my back with soap. I no longer flinch when he comes in; I expect it now. I turn around to do the same for him.

So, are you ready to meet my brother?

I ask him.

He pours shampoo on his hand and rubs it over his head. Sometimes I wonder what the point is when he has such short hair, but it does smell delish when I

m kissing his neck.

Yeah, why wouldn

t I be ready?

I don

t think he realizes the seriousness of this. Luke isn

t just my brother. In ways, he

s worse than any father when it comes to me. Cody learned this the hard way. Luke still isn

t that keen on him. Of course, he felt bad about the way I dumped him, but he thought Cody was too perfect and just not right for me. After three years of being with him, I finally realized that too. Why settle for less? Why settle at all?

He

s overly serious. So, don

t get too frustrated if he doesn

t warm up to you right away. He doesn

t know anything about us, either. I think we should keep it that way for now, okay?

He smirks.

Okay, boss. You got it!

He slides his fingers down my stomach and slips them over my sweet spot, through my slick folds. My eyes roll back, and I automatically arch my back, letting out a light moan and bringing my ass to his groin. He

s hard and erect against me, just how I like him. He enters me without warning, fast and deep. I yell out from the jolt of pleasure it gives me. Kyle stays still, buried deep within me. He kisses the nape of my neck and nibbles on my earlobe as he waits for my body to adjust to his invasion.

I place my hands on the shower tile, and I begin to wiggle, giving him the green light to move.

Fuck me, baby,

I whisper to him. Kyle immediately pumps into me, harder with every confident thrust, bringing me closer to that euphoric bliss.

He puts his lips to my ear.

Is that how you like it, baby? Do you like when I fuck you like that?

Wow! Holy fuck! I love it when he talks dirty. It

s such a turn on! I want to cream right here and now. My build up is about to overflow. I scream out his name as he moves his fingers in tiny circles over my swollen nub, and I begin to convulse around him. Kyle follows right after. We stay locked together until we can catch our breath. He showers me with light kisses until he finally slips out of me.

We get out of the shower. He gets dressed, and I finish getting ready. Kinsey has my car, so she comes back to pick us up.

We pull up to the restaurant; it

s packed. But it

s a Friday night, so it was expected. Luke is already waiting at the table as the waitress leads us to him.

He stands up with his arms open and a smile as bright as the sun.

Hey, sis!

He picks me up and twirls me around just as a father would do to his little girl. I embrace him.

He gives Kinsey a hug, and then I introduce him to Kyle. He shakes his hand like he would to an old friend. Luke doesn

t seem reserved or in interrogation mode, which relaxes me a little. We all take our seats and order some drinks.

Where

s Justin?

I ask.

Luke rubs his eyes with his fingers.

He

s in his own world. I asked him to come, but him and Valerie had already made plans.

What

s up with that?

Kinsey comments in disgust.

They couldn

t hold off for one night to come have some drinks with us? He

s way too attached to her. It

s sickening.

The waitress comes over with our drinks. This glass of pinot has been calling my name. I take a sip and feel it glide down my throat. Just what I needed after this long day.

So, Kyle, my sister here never told me how you met,

Luke says. Oh no, maybe I was wrong in relaxing.

Max just became partner at my parent

s agency. They asked me to come help her move. I

ve been showing her around town, getting her acquainted with the area,

he explains proudly. He looks adorable, too.

Luke seems impressed, which rarely happens.

That

s awesome. It

s nice to know she

s in good hands. I

m looking forward to meeting your parents.

Luke takes a sip of his beer. Kinsey and I make some small talk on the side.

What are you girls whispering about?

Luke asks.

Wouldn

t you like to know?

Kinsey taunts.

Luke clearly looks annoyed. Ever since they met, Kinsey

s been a pest he can

t get rid of. Surprisingly, they never had any sexual chemistry together

thank God! I don

t know if I could have handled that: my best friend dating my brother. No way. But I am concerned about him being so alone all the time. Everybody needs somebody.

We order our appetizers and entrees.

No, I guess I wouldn

t. Never mind,

Luke says, taking another sip of his bourbon.

So, tell me about Rochester.

Kinsey makes a guttural noise before sipping her wine. Kyle and I talk to Luke about the agency and the people who work there. Luke seems to be enjoying Kyle

s stories. I notice that Luke keeps looking down at his watch as though he has somewhere to be or he

s waiting for someone. Strange.

Our meals finally come after we start on our second drinks. I

m feeling warm and fuzzy inside. The smell from the lemon and garlic pasta is wonderful. I thought I would be full after the appetizers, but I didn

t even put a dent in my hunger. I definitely worked up an appetite.

I excuse myself to go to the ladies

room. On the way back to the table, Kinsey tries to prevent me from heading back.

Kinsey, what are you doing?

I ask as she places her hands on my shoulders, stopping me from walking any farther.

Her eyes are big, and she can

t stop shaking her head.

I

m sorry Max. I didn

t think Luke would do this.

Do what?

I ask, aggravated. I push around her to go to the table. Something

s up; this is not like her.

Max, don

t!

she yells. Now people are beginning to stare.

When I enter the dining area, I stop dead in my tracks. My father is seated at our table. The blood rushes to my head as my heart is pumping furiously. Luke stands up to try to explain.

Stop! Don

t come near me! How could you, Luke?

I screech. I can

t help but look at him and feel heartbroken and betrayed. Now the whole room is looking at me. Kyle immediately jumps up to stand next to me.

Max, let me explain,

Luke begs.

My father stands up.

Maxine, this wasn

t his fault. I just wanted to see you. Can you please have a seat?

He gestures to the seat next to him.

Tears begin to flow down my cheeks.

You stay away from me!

I

m now hysterical. My father takes a step toward me, but Kyle stops him.

He puts his hand on my father

s chest.

Don

t move another step toward her. She doesn

t want to see you,

Kyle warns. Luke begins to walk in Kyle

s direction.

We

re leaving,

Kyle continues.

You shouldn

t have pushed her like this, Luke. You had no right!

Kinsey grabs my shoulders and embraces me as we start to walk away.

You don

t know shit! Who the fuck are you?

Luke questions angrily.

Kyle stands his ground.

I know she already told you she didn

t want to see him. I know that you bombarded her just now and made her feel like a fool in front of this whole room! You just don

t do this shit,

he growls.

Kyle storms away. He comes up behind me to help Kinsey get me in the car. I can barely breathe. The air has been sucked out of my lungs. Everything around me is whirling in blurry colors. My limbs are like jelly. If it weren

t for Kyle being my support, I would have collapsed to the ground already.

He gets into the backseat with me and holds me tight, pressing me close to his chest. He kisses my forehead as I sob into his shirt.

Shhh, it

s okay. I got you,

he whispers.

CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN

Kyle

My stomach is in knots as she cries on me. I feel helpless. I should have just beat the shit out of her brother for what he just did. I didn

t realize how bad the situation was until I saw her shaking. Her father must have done a real number on her growing up. She

s trembling from just the sight of him.
