Chapter Forty-three

Gabrielle ~ Three Words

Gabrielle and Lucas awoke at the same time as the captain’s voice alerted their descent into New York City. The flight had been smooth, and both slept the entire time, but neither felt rested due to the vivid, violent scenes that played out in their minds.

They made their way through the wide walkways of the airport until they found a quiet spot to wait until their flight boarded for London. Gabrielle sat and propped her feet up on her carry-on. Lucas lay down on the seats next to her, placing his head in her lap. She switched back and forth between running her fingers through his hair and gently stroking his temple with her thumb.

Images of the dreams and visions took turns in her mind. It was frustrating to have so many unanswered questions, to know something horrible was coming in Lucas’s future—maybe
several
things based on all she’d been shown—and any one of them could end his life.

And I can’t do a damn thing about it because I
still
don’t know what
any
of it really means!

“I’ve always liked to fly just so I can people watch. But there isn’t much opportunity to do that in the wee hours, huh?” Lucas asked, pulling Gabrielle back from her ponderings.

“What?” she asked through a laugh. Lucas had asked his question with a straight face, and the outburst of laughter from Gabrielle startled him. Gabrielle had to give herself a second to reign in her amusement. “You’re flying to another continent to see the Damned, and your thoughts are about having no people to watch. I’m both impressed and concerned you’re not asking many questions.” She became more serious. “Don’t you have more questions? We’ve covered a little about angels and other things, but not enough to satisfy what I would think would be natural human curiosity.”

Lucas smiled and shook his head. “Oh, love.”

Her heart skipped when he called her that.

He sat up slowly, scooting his body into the seat next to her. “I have a million questions in my head. I just don’t know where to start.”

“How about with something easy, and we can go from there? If you’re up to it?”

“Sure. The only other thing to do is sleep. I don’t think I’ll be getting much of that on these incredibly wonderful, sleep inviting, cushy,
comfy
plastic seats,” he said with more than a hint of sarcasm. “What did you think of your first flight? Well, on a
plane
.”

Gabrielle laughed lightly. “That I could have been at our final destination now instead of taking over half a day like we’re doing.” She saw Lucas flinch and realized how she must have sounded. Her mood still wasn’t that good. She quickly tried to make up for her choice of words and delivery. “But if I had traveled the way I’m accustomed to, I wouldn’t be here with you. For that reason alone
,
I would happily trek across the world and back if you were my companion on the journey.”

Lucas made a dramatic gagging noise. It was her turn to be caught off-guard.

“What?”
Gabrielle asked, confused as to what brought on the dramatics.

“It’s a really good thing there was no one around to hear you because, as much as I believe you mean it, that sounded disgustingly sappy. I think anyone within earshot would have hurled.” He could barely contain his laughter, sending Gabrielle into a playful attack mode as she proceeded to pinch him anywhere he wasn’t constantly trying to move to protect.

After several seconds of wrestling and laughter, they calmed down. A few moments more and they were snuggled up again, Gabrielle’s head resting on his shoulder, easily picking up the conversation where they’d left off.

“I did mean it, you know. Even if it did sound sappy. You make me sappy, Lucas. One big sappy, dopey, teenagery, mushy, mess of a powerful—I should know better than to be doing this—angel.”

“I’m happy I have that effect on you, love. I don’t feel so ridiculous now about the things I think about you.” He kissed the top of her head, then moved the conversation back toward his questions.

“Why does it make you feel ridiculous?” she asked.

“We haven’t known each other very long.”

Gabrielle could hear a smile in his tone even if she wasn’t looking at him to see it, but he seemed hesitant to voice the rest of what he wanted to say. After she felt his shoulders rise with a deep breath, he continued.

“Most people would say that it’s too soon to have feelings as deep as I already have for you. I … uh …” Lucas let out a soft chuckle but never finished his statement.

Gabrielle realized what he was trying to tell her, though. The idea of hearing the words I love you, and not just I’m falling in love with you, coming from his lips terrified her. This relationship was turning out to be so much more than she ever bargained for. She’d hoped for it, though, even if she hadn’t easily admitted that to herself.

But … wow …

Gabrielle let that conversation drift off to a quiet and possibly premature end. She just wasn’t ready to deal with those three words at the moment. Luckily, Lucas filled the silence with another question.

“So … will you tell me what all of your powers and abilities are?”

Gabrielle smiled. “I wondered when you would get around to the
superhero
powers. I have quite a few. Some I’ve just received and haven’t used …
yet.
I know we’ve talked about a couple of them, but I’m just going to go down the list.”

Lucas grinned and nodded.

“There’s, of course, pausing time—”

That
one I won’t ever forget,” he said.

Both snickered, but Gabrielle felt the bite of guilt return for a moment. She quickly shook it off and continued, not wanting to let the emotion take over her mood.

“There’s telepathy with other angels, but that’s one all angels have. So is reading a human’s mind, but we rarely do that. It’s considered too intrusive unless it’s a necessity. If we use that ability, we have to answer for it to the Council.”

“Why?”

“We aren’t supposed to interfere with a human’s free will. Unless we plan to in some way, there’s not much of a reason to use that ability.”

Lucas made an exaggerated
of course
gesture, which brought on a much shorter version of their earlier wrestling match. Gabrielle continued after he pleaded for mercy.

“I obviously have the ability to take human form and have human interaction.”

“My personal favorite, I must say,” Lucas piped in and flashed that wonderful crooked grin.

Gabrielle couldn’t resist returning it with her own. “I can Hush, now. Which I’m considering trying out for the first time on you,” she said jokingly.

“What’s that?”

“With a small gesture and thought, I can make any creature, whether of Divine blood or human, be quiet. It takes away the ability to verbalize, and in the case of those with Divine blood and Qalal, ceases their ability to communicate telepathically. Then, I just lift the Hush, and they can communicate normally once again.

“I can make people forget whatever I feel they need to, with only the thought to make it so, be where I want to be within moments; I have tremendous strength and speed, and I have power to command any creature, except demons and the Gentry, to do what I ask when it relates to my job, but
only
then.” Gabrielle took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “And I now have the ability to control the four elements.”

“Whoa!
Really?” Lucas nearly sprang to his feet. He turned and looked at her with wide eyes and probably the biggest grin she’d ever seen on his face. “You can control the four elements?”

“I’m not surprised you like that one.” Gabrielle smiled, wondering what was going through his mind. She’d bet he was thinking of all the ways he would use her powers.

Lucas made an exaggerated
of course
face and gesture again, then played like he was protecting himself from the pinching he was sure would be coming from Gabrielle. When he stopped, he smiled and kissed her, resituating himself closer to her.

“I would take
any
of the powers and abilities you have, but if I had to pick just one, it’d be a toss-up between controlling the elements and making money appear like magic—whenever. Push come to shove … money would win.”

“Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to mention the money … and stuff.”

“And stuff? What others are you
forgetting
?”

“Wouldn’t
you
like to know? I have to leave some surprises for you.”

Lucas was getting a kick out of all the things Gabrielle could do, and it made her happy to feel he accepted her for who she was. The nagging voice in the back of her mind returned though, still trying to get her attention. Asking if she really thought it was going to work out between them—pointing out she could never have a future with him.

Unless

She pushed the voice away, not wanting to give it the opportunity to take root and grow. It would take over her reasoning if it did, and she’d have to abandon Lucas and this feeling she had with him—
forever
. The only other option she could see was if she made the decision, as Emma had, to live life completely as a human—to die as one. That wasn’t an option she wanted to consider. Leaving her brethren’s, and particularly Yahuwah’s, presence was the last thing she desired to do. With neither choice, giving up Lucas or her Divine home and life, being appealing, she’d continue to push the voice away—and would keep doing so whenever it returned—until she was forced to make a decision.

The day will come when I have to.

“Gabby, are you ok? You look upset.”

“I’m fine.” She smiled, trying to wipe her thoughts clean again. “Any more questions right now?”

He smiled a very sexy smile and nodded. “Do you know what God thinks about one of His most powerful angels and little ol’ me hooking up?”

She really didn’t want to stay on this subject. It would prompt the voice to chime in again.

“He knows, and all I can tell you at this point is He believes our relationship is beneficial. He thinks I’ll obtain important insight about people’s motivations pertaining to a romantic relationship.” Gabrielle paused as she felt the full weight of what she was trying to do to help win the war rest on her, dragging her mood and expression down with its heaviness. She knew that thinking about the burden of it would cause her to quickly become grim and intense, but this was reality. Lives—
everything
—was at stake. “We’re fighting a war, Lucas. A war for the souls residing in the bodies that walk and will walk Earth. There isn’t one of Yahuwah’s children He doesn’t want to see come home to Him when their time here is over. But Darkness is becoming stronger, and it’s causing us to lose more and more of you every day. I
have
to figure out how to get through to people so they’ll
want
to do, to
be
, better—to make the right decisions.” Gabrielle paused. “For now, He’s allowing this; I don’t know for how long. That’s why I wanted you to think about if you want to continue with our relationship. We have no guarantees. Other than that, I’ve been cautioned to not go too far.”

Lucas looked at Gabrielle and spoke thoughtfully. “I guess I’ll just have to let out little bits of information at a time, then. Maybe that’ll keep you around longer.” He smiled, but she saw the sadness behind it. “I can always play hard to get.”

They both laughed at the suggestion.

“What? Little late?” he asked playfully, raising one brow as if the thought surprised him.

“Yeah.” She chuckled. “I’d say so.”

The next three months would pass far too quickly. She wished she could slow time, make it last longer. But that was beyond even her power.

Chapter Forty-four

Gabrielle ~ Children Are the Best

The serious, and not so serious, conversations helped make their layover pass quickly. The questioning had ended without either one deciding it was time to move on, but Gabrielle knew he would need more answers later.

When they boarded the plane, Gabrielle took the window seat again. She was going to have to work and didn’t want any more disturbance of her human body than necessary when she began her communication with Sheridan.

As everyone settled in for the long flight, she explained to Lucas that outwardly she would look as if she was sleeping. And if he needed her, all he had to do was shake her, stressing not to do it unless he had to. Again, she was surprised how easily he accepted the information.

Gabrielle closed her eyes and called to Sheridan, and the two got to work. Sheridan had nothing new to report concerning the Book and reassured Gabrielle she would alert her when there was. When Gabrielle came back to Lucas, there was a little more than half an hour before their descent. He was sleeping, apparently well judging by his open mouth and slight snore. She couldn’t help but laugh.

Her amusement caught the attention of a little girl sitting in front of her who stood up in her seat and turned around to look at Gabrielle. Her blue eyes sparkled with the wonder only a child can possess. She was about five years old with hair the color of white sand and perfectly smooth skin. She moved the fingers on her right hand to say hello, and when Gabrielle waved back and smiled, she stood up further in her seat, revealing her wide smile with one missing front tooth.

Children are the best.

She rarely had to give out bad karma to them unless they were particularly cruel. She did reward the good things they did when Yahuwah felt it was needed to give them positive reinforcement. Other than that, He allowed them to learn through the results of their choices until they were older. She caught herself wondering what it would be like to have children of her own—not that it was possible.

Lucas woke to see Gabrielle playing peek-a-boo with the girl and just watched her—seeming to enjoy their interaction. When the girl noticed Lucas was awake, she immediately ducked behind the seat. Gabrielle and Lucas laughed as the girl slowly peeked over the top of the seat. Once she decided she wanted to flirt with Lucas, she turned on her little-kid charm and entertained them until the captain announced they were beginning their descent to London. The girl turned around and gave verbal protest to her mom. She wasn’t ready to abandon her fun with the strangers behind her.

Lucas took Gabrielle’s hand and squeezed. She returned the gesture and laid her head on his shoulder, leaving it there until it was time to stand and leave the plane. As they approached the baggage claim, Lucas told her to wait while he grabbed their things.

Gabrielle decided to do some of her own people watching while she waited. She wondered where everyone was coming from—where they were going. She was caught up in thought about the people moving around her when the little girl from the plane moved into her line of vision. Gabrielle focused on her, ready to say bye to their new friend. When her eyes settled on the child, Gabrielle’s shock sent her stumbling back a couple of steps, struggling to catch the breath she felt had been knocked out of her.

The little girl with sparkling blue eyes and big, friendly grin had stopped. The sea of people that had been flowing around her were no longer there—only the little girl and Gabrielle remained. She was turned slightly to face Gabrielle—
glaring
.

Her once blue eyes were solid black and so shiny that the bright lights of the terminal glinted off them. Her smile was the furthest from friendly as it could be; it was a sneer and abnormally wide for her, or anyone else’s, face—showing brown, gnarly teeth. She flicked a long red serpents tongue at Gabrielle, and she could swear she heard the little girl hiss.

As soon as Gabrielle felt the shock subsiding, the little girl’s face and eyes returned to normal, and she turned to continue walking as her mom and the tide of people returned.

Gabrielle watched her.
Did that really just happen? Is my human mind’s imagination getting the best of me?

As if the girl heard her, she turned again and shot Gabrielle a wicked smile, releasing an unnerving, evil giggle as she did—a giggle Gabrielle was sure only she could hear. Then she turned around again and vanished in the crowded airport.

A wave of nausea overtook Gabrielle, and she felt light-headed. The walls around her began to sway, and the ground beneath her joined their dance. She felt her body go limp. Blackness closed in from all directions. Just before she lost consciousness, she felt two arms wrap around her and heard Lucas’s voice in her ear saying her name—desperation edging into his normally melodic tone.

Another voice overpowered Lucas’s, making his seem distant.

‘You may be powerful, Gabrielle, but Yahuwah created me even more powerful long before you existed. I am the power of His power, mind of His mind—the first angel He showed true favor toward, and the one who still haunts every moment of His existence. He knows what I will do.’
There was another laugh, but this one was not a little girl’s. It was sinister.
‘I know His secrets,
Gabrielle, so
you’ll never be a match for me … and one day soon, you’ll find out exactly what I mean … the hard,
painful
way.’

As she drifted further away from the conscious world, she heard the caw of a crow. Then everything was quiet.

Gabrielle opened her eyes to see a crowd of unfamiliar faces staring down at her, an even split of curiosity and concern in their expressions. Her mind was foggy from what had just happened with the little girl—the demon—but she began to sit up slowly.

“Easy, love.”

She turned in the direction of Lucas’s voice but did so a little too fast, sending her mind spinning. Thankfully, she was still on the ground, or she would have ended up there again—bringing even more unwanted attention to her than she already had.

“Are you okay? What happened?”

“I’m fine, just a little embarrassed,” she whispered so only he could hear. “I’ll have to tell you what happened when we have less of an audience.”

Lucas helped her to her feet and politely told everyone she was all right so they’d continue on their way. It took a little more convincing for the airport security, and after several tries to set their minds at ease, Lucas finally told them that she was pregnant. Gabrielle looked at him with wide eyes—wishing he was a full-blood so she could say several very choice words to him telepathically. When the security officers were appeased and carried on with their duties, Lucas looked at her with a hint of playfulness in his eyes.

“Well … what did you want me to do?” he asked through a little laugh. “They weren’t letting it be. I had to get rid of them somehow!”

She quickly let her irritation go because of what she saw replace the playful expression he had shown a moment before. Lucas looked at her expectantly, concern now dominating his expression. Gabrielle knew what he wanted, but she didn’t want to tell him until she was sure they had privacy. She also needed time to gather her thoughts.

“Let’s get our car first, Lucas. When we start driving, we’ll talk.”

After getting the keys to their rental, which required a little more of her angelic charm since they were too young to rent a car, they made their way to the lot and found their vehicle. It was simple and small, but it didn’t matter as long as it got them where they needed to go.

“You want me to drive so you can concentrate on telling me what happened?” Lucas asked.

“I’ll be fine driving. It’s probably better if I’m behind the wheel. We can get to where we need to go easier that way.”

“Whatever you say.”

“I hate to push it,” Lucas said once they settled in the rental and were on their way to the hotel, “but are you going to tell me what happened back there? I’m a little concerned over here, you know.”

Gabrielle was expecting Lucas’s question, but it sent her back into her deepest thoughts about the encounter with the little girl and the affect it had on her. It was not an average, every day, demon in the child—it was incredibly powerful, and she was sure who it was. She had never been so affected when encountering one of the Fallen, and the overwhelming sensation was alarming. She was pensive, already planning how to handle the next time they crossed paths—and there would be a next time.

“Love …”

“I’m sorry, Lucas. Of course.”

She told him everything she’d seen and felt and saw it visibly shook him, as well.

“Why do you think it affected you so strongly?”

“It was an exceptionally powerful demon, more powerful than any I’ve ever
encountered. I’ll talk to Amaziah about it when I speak with him again.”

“How often do you talk to him?”

“Normally, frequently, but there’s a lot going on right now. I don’t know when the next time will be. I can contact him if it’s necessary, but I’m not going to distract him from his duties for this. He’s looking for something that’s important.”

“I’d say what just happened is pretty important, Gabby. You may be in danger. You said another with Divine blood could kill you. Unless I misunderstood what you told me, that includes demons.” There was urgency in his voice again. “It sounds like it was trying to let you know it’s watching you.”

“Yes, it includes demons, and I’m glad it showed itself to me because now I do know. Lucas, my job leaves me open to revenge seekers. It’s in their nature to go after me if given the opportunity. I’ve had to deal with demons in the past, and I’ll have to in the future. It goes with the territory, you know.” She reached for his hand to reassure him. “I can’t call to Amaziah every time I bump into one of the Fallen. I can handle myself just fine. But I love how concerned you are for me.” She raised his hand to her lips and kissed it.

He clearly wasn’t at ease. His body was rigid, his expression still agitated.

“I guess I can’t do anything to change your mind. Just know I’m not happy about it. I don’t care if you are an angel. Demons scare the crap out of me, and I would die if anything happened to you.”

The thought of him dying brought the images in the grim dreams back. “I told you I don’t want to hear you talk about dying.”

Lucas studied her, contemplating his response. His expression was stoic. “You’ll have to be unhappy with me mentioning dying, just as I’m unhappy with you for not taking the danger you could be in seriously.”

She studied his face and realized they were at an impasse. She felt a smile curve the corners of her mouth. “Touché.”
