6. [Chinese-tunnel letters.] Letters found in a tunnel under the Restaurante Victoria in Mexicali, 2003. Discovered by Yolanda Sánchez Ogás, Terrie Petree and WTV in 2003. The restaurant owner, Miguel, might or might not have known of their existence before; he was fairly indifferent, allowed me to borrow them to get them translated, but wanted them back. Some were rat-eaten. They lay in a decrepit old desk, mostly in their original envelopes and mostly addressed to Wong Kong Ja Tong. I hired Clare and Rosalyn Ng to translate as many as I could afford. The letters have been translated in batches. Within each batch, the items are numbered and titled. I have kept photocopies of the Chinese originals in each translated batch, matched up to their English translations. At the conclusion of this project, these materials will be donated to the AHMM. The originals have been returned. Here is a representative citation in
Imperial:
“Chinese-tunnel letters, Batch 2, VI (A letter from a wife to a husband).” In Batch 1, my Roman item number (e.g., IV) corresponds to the translator’s Arabic page number (p. 4).
