The words hit Darren like a
bullet train. It was his wife. It was his baby.

“No.. please….I beg… save
our..baby…”

Darren reeled himself and he
signed the papers. His face had been covered in tears and he had looked so
haggard. He knew he would lose their baby.. but he couldn’t lose Abby.

“ Save my wife…”

It suddenly dawned on him
that he had been such an useless husband. Why had he failed to protect his
wife? Why had he failed to protect his baby?

He had returned just in time
to see Tiffany abruptly emerging from the back, and before he could stop it,
she had pushed her so hard that she had tumbled down the stairs…

Darren buried his face into
his hands and he sighed.

He thought about his relationship with Abby and his relationship with
Tiffany. Who was he truly happy with? Who was the one who was truly there for
him? Who was the one whom he knew he couldn’t live with?

It was Abby. He knew that
all along. He just didn’t want to admit it. But it had been all. Too late. Even
though he had told Tiffany that he didn’t know how to face her again, Abby
would never forgive Tiffany or him.

Hours passed. After what had
felt like an eternity, the surgeons wheeled Abby out of the ward where she was
unconscious and looking pale-white.

Darren rushed forward.
Grabbing the surgeon’s wrist, he asked.

“ How is my wife?”

The surgeon had replied that
she was out of danger, but they weren’t able to save the child. The baby had
been gone..forever..

A frail Abby woke up on her
hospital bed.

“ You’ve woken up, Abby!”

She was surrounded by her
family and Darren.

“ Is my baby safe?”

She hadn’t even cared about
her own safety. She just knew that she had to protect her baby.

There was silence. No one
replied.

“ Someone answer me!”

Abby burst into tears.

“ Abby- the baby is gone. But it is okay…”

Darren said with his voice cracking.

“ What are you doing here? Leave! Mother, tell him to leave! I don’t
want to see him again!”

“ Abby please….”

Her mother had beckoned him to leave for the moment, and he left
reluctantly. He wanted so badly to accompany her and he knew she probably would
never forgive him.

He had tried to win her heart by paying a trip to her ward every single
day. He would read to her, bring food for her and play his guitar for her.

She knew it hadn’t been his
fault that they had lost the baby, but she couldn’t forgive how cruel he had
been to her all along.

Chapter 18

The Final Chance

6 months later, Abby had
been living with her family back at their hometown. One day, there was an
unexpected visitor.

It was Darren.

He had retrieved a handmade card from his briefcase
and showed it to her.

It had stipulated that he
was to do 50 things to make her happy, and if she liked, he could extend the
list. Then, he knelt down, presented a bouquet of roses to her, and asked if
she could give him a chance to prove his love for her.

“ Just a chance.. to date
you properly”

She didn’t say whether she agreed or not, but she smiled.

To be continued…
