Sarah, Diane, Peter, Kay, and María helped me tremendously with my children. With friends like these, a working mom can actually finish writing a book. Sam Freedman, as ever, provided advice and encouragement, as did Lindy Hess, dear friend and early champion of this project.

My agent, Anna Ghosh, understood the book before she had even read the proposal and was immediately enthusiastic. She led
me to my editor at Beacon Press, Gayatri Patnaik, an immigrant herself, who has made it a personal and professional mission to publish books that advance the national conversation on immigration. She, along with all the other good people at Beacon Press, has lovingly tended to this book. In particular, I want to thank Beacon’s director, Helene Atwan; Tom Hallock, director of sales and marketing; Bob Kosturko, creative director, who designed the beautiful cover; Beth Collins, who put it all together skillfully; Rachael Marks, editorial assistant, who was always available, always helpful, always professional and friendly; and freelancer Chris Dodge, the best copy editor I’ve had since I left the
Times.

I’m indebted to Columbia University for providing the resources to research and write the book, with three grants: the Diversity Research Fellowship Award and (twice) the Research and Travel Grant of the Institute of Latin American Studies. Esteban Andrade, program manager of the institute, was a great source of contacts and information. Nick Lemann, Bill Grueskin, and Laura Muha—my colleagues at the Graduate School of Journalism—allowed me to take the time to complete this project and were very creative with my schedule when I couldn’t take any more time off.

My children, Juan Arturo, Lucas, and Marcelo, were the inspiration and motivation to tell this story. More than once I left the dinner table to take notes inspired by our talks. Yet they sacrificed much to the book’s completion, and they got way too used to my peering at them over my reading glasses with a glazed look. “Thinking of your book?” they often asked. Yes, of course, but I also was, and I always am, thinking of them first. It is my hope that they will remember this tumultuous period of our lives as a time of growth and learning.
