A wave rolled over her feet on its way up the beach, the cool water caressing her skin. The tide was coming in. She’d left her paints and her yoga mat in her room this morning, needing some time to herself without the distraction of an activity, and she’d managed to slip away from Mar Azul without anyone spotting her. What was she going to tell Paul ... or Trisha? After all of her high and mighty “he’s so not my type” talk, how would she explain what they’d become? And just what was that anyway? Did this mean they were a couple? Were they dating? Was she his girlfriend? Couple sounded too ... official, dating too formal, and girlfriend/boyfriend too juvenile. They were friends, that was certain, and the thought of it made her chuckle. She was friends, close friends, with Mark Jeffery. At what point would that not sound just a little strange? Probably much sooner than she was dating, or otherwise romantically involved with, Mark Jeffery. That one would take awhile, if it was true. Was it true, or was it some kind of holiday fling for her and pleasant distraction for him? No. She didn’t believe that anymore, not after everything that had happened and all that was said. He was no Nick, that was true, and not “her type” in many ways, but she’d come to care for him more and more deeply as she got to know what was under the surface, the real Mark, the person that Alejandro saw. She loved him. She’d been falling in love all along but hadn’t seen it, or had chosen not to.

A warm rush of wind met her face and lifted the hat from her head. She jumped up and caught it in mid-air, laughing at her quick reflexes. “Gotcha!” That was when she saw him, walking toward her on the beach. He was too far away to see clearly but she knew him right away, his untucked shirt rippling around him in the breeze, his dark curls dancing. It was Mark Jeffery, the very famous, very handsome British actor, Mark Jeffery. And he was a guy, just a guy, her guy, as it turned out. Sandra smiled and walked just a little faster.
