Chapter 6

Ana stretched out in the empty bed and smiled. She ran her hands down Colton’s top and pulled it up to her nose, loving that she smelled of him. She squealed as she thought about everything that was falling into place and loved that finally she was going to be happy with a man she adored. She reached over to the bedside cabinet and pulled over her cell, quickly dialing Angelica’s number.

“Hey girl,” her best friend answered.

“Hey!” she said.

“Well, you sound rather happy.”

“Last night was amazing,” she said, “Colton is everything I ever dreamed of. I don’t know how I’ve lasted this long without him I mean the things he did just…wow. I’m surprised I even have enough energy to wake up this morning.”

“Alright, you’d better stop this or you’ll make me jealous. Not all of us can get billionaires to fall in love with them you know.”

“I’m sorry, I’m just so happy!” Ana said, squealing again

.

Angelica was amused by Ana’s excitement and chuckled a bit down the phone.

“So the plan worked?”

“Better than I hoped. I trust him completely. He showed me a side of him that I never knew was there before but now that I’ve seen it I just want to help him grow. I want to be there for him and be by his side.”

“So it’s pretty heavy then.”

“Yeah, I guess. I know I sound crazy but there’s something between us that’s insane. We both drive each other completely crazy and when we’re alone something happens. I get this rush of emotion. I look at him and I just want him all the time.”

“Is he there now?”

“If he was I wouldn’t be talking to you, no offence. No, and it’s something I wanted to talk to you about. I hope you don’t mind but I kind of invited him to stay for the week. He’s just gone out now to buy some toothpaste and things.”

“Uh, well, I guess I can’t stand in the way of your happiness. Do you want me to keep crashing at my parents for a while?”

“No not at all I’d never do that, this is your home as well. I just wanted to make sure it was okay. You can come back any time you like just um, well, we’ll remember to put some music on or something.”

“That’s disgusting and I think I’ll invest in some ear plugs. But you’re happy?”

“So happy.”

“Then I’m happy for you. This is going to be exciting isn’t it?”

“I hope so!”

They continued to chat about the intimate details of the previous night and Angelica was impressed by the evident skill that Colton expressed, although as she heard Ana speak excitedly of the lovemaking she did feel lonelier herself. However, despite her own feelings she did not let it disrupt Ana’s good mood.

Angelica listened dutifully as Ana spoke poetically about primal and erotic acts, and she only hung up when Colton came back. He entered the room, looking devilishly handsome as always, and Ana bit her lip as she writhed on the bed. Colton growled and leapt underneath the sheets, taking her again and ravishing her until she shuddered and moaned his name in utter delight.

“I missed you,” he said, after it was over, kissing the side of her face and nibbling on her ear.

“I missed you too,” she said, and kissed him back.

Her bed was filled with romance and love, and after the vigorous hours they had spent together they took the time to languish in their afterglow, simply enjoying the act of existing with each other. They lay draped over each other and spoke sweetly to one another. Lulls in conversation providing ample opportunities for tender kisses. They gazed into each other’s eyes, forming a bond that went deeper than any mere physicality. Ana felt as though their souls had been linked together in an unbreakable bond. She ran her hand down his steely jaw and felt the rough stubble scratch her skin, and she murmured with contentment.

“I’m so happy right now,” she said, and Colton agreed.

Over the next week or so they barely moved from the bedroom. Angelica returned and she spoke more with Colton, who seemed more sociable than usual, and this pleased Ana for she wanted her boyfriend and her best friend to get along. The rest of their time was spent with each other, enjoying each other’s bodies and thoughts. Any difficult moments where she felt that she had been torn between Glenn and Colton had disappeared. She paid no more attention to Glenn and was solely focused on the one who thought of himself as an outcast. They spoke of many things when they were taking a break from lovemaking, and had many deep conversations.

On one occasion Colton was resting his head on her chest, feeling her heart under her breast. His hand was tracing circles around her stomach while she played with his hair.

“We’re made of such crude matter. Do you think it’s strange that we can feel so connected with one another even though we only have our senses? Do you think that we can ever truly know someone?”

“I feel like I know you,” she said, letting his long hair rest between her fingers. “I think it’s good. It means we have a choice about who we give ourselves to. It means that we’re not able to know anyone unless they let us. It means that we have to make a conscious choice and say, ‘I choose to give myself to this person’. It makes it more special, although it does mean that you have to make sure you choose the right person.”

“I never thought of it like that. I thought there was always a hidden part of yourself, a part that nobody else can ever see. Glenn and the others made me so ashamed of who I was that I became afraid to show myself to the world. I just…I want you to know that I might not be perfect but it’s not because I don’t want to be it’s just because I haven’t done this before. You’re the first woman I’ve been truly close with…the first one I’ve ever wanted to be close with but sometimes I might make mistakes-”

Ana interrupted him by lifting his head up and giving him a long kiss.

“You’re perfect to me,” she said, searching his eyes, “and you can show me anything. I’m not like them. I’m not going to make you ashamed. I like you for who you are and that’s all I want you to be. I want you to show me everything.”

He kissed her back in reply but there was something about his expression that made her wonder. There was still something he was holding back, she was sure of it, but she didn’t know what and she knew that if he hadn’t told her by now then he wasn’t going to tell her if she tried to force it out of him. She did know that he had revealed a lot about himself and that meant something to her so if there was something that he found hard to talk about she wasn’t going to press him because that wasn’t fair to him.

As far as Ana was concerned Colton had proven himself to her. If it took him a little more time to get over the trauma he suffered from after his treatment when he was younger; then she was willing to give him the time he needed, and whenever he did share his innermost secrets she would accept him with open arms and a loving heart.

On only a few occasions did they venture to leave her apartment, usually for food, although sometimes they used the opportunity to get some fresh air. When they did so they were met with stares from people around, and Ana quite liked being the talk of the town. Hushed whispers greeted them whenever they entered a restaurant or a store and eyes followed them wherever they went. Colton was uncomfortable with it and he often insisted that they go back to the safety of the apartment, but Ana enjoyed having so much attention thrust upon her.

“I’m glad to be spending time with you, so don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m really looking forward to spending time at my cabin again away from all these people.”

“I’m surprised you can live near Newtown if Trinity Falls is too busy for you. I’ve always hated that it’s so small.”

“But you didn’t have to grow up with a big family and loads of official functions to go to. I actually had a wardrobe full of suits when I was five. And I had to learn dinner party etiquette.”

This made Ana snort with laughter.

“Don’t take
this
the wrong way but I can’t imagine you at a dinner party at all.”

“Usually now I just sit and glower in the corner. It took a lot of work to perfect the brooding look.”

“I’m sure. So did you ever intend to attend the ceremony?”

“I put in an appearance, that’s all that mattered. All those people there were just too much and I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to handle it so as soon as I got an opportunity I left. But I had to come back and see you. I knew Glenn was going to have a go at me for it but that’s nothing new. Sometimes I feel like everyone is always wanting me to be someone I’m not.”

“What did your parents want you to be?”

“I’m not sure. That’s the problem. They died when I was so young that I can only remember vague things about them, like the way my mother laughed or how I used to play fight with my father. Anything else is blurry. But I know I was happy.”

She squeezed his hand.

“I can’t wait to move to Newtown and be around all those people, to go to bars and restaurants and just feel alive with the energy around the city.”

“And come to visit my log cabin of course.”

“Of course,” she said, smiling broadly. “So where is it anyway?”

“It’s not too far from where the wedding took place actually. That’s where I went that night, after I saw you in the forest.”

“You mean after you kissed me and then ran away.”

Colton flushed with embarrassment.

“It wasn’t my proudest moment, that’s for sure. But yes. If you continue along the path instead of turning onto the highway it takes you around the forest and eventually it leads to a clearing, but then the road ends and you have to go on by foot. It’s a straight path though, it just means that less people are inclined to come and visit. There are far more interesting places to go though.”

“Not for me,” she said, “so you must have spent a lot of time in the woods?” she asked.

“Most of my life.”

“Ever seen any magical creatures?” she asked.

He seemed to flinch and Ana thought it an extreme reaction for such a simple question, and she assumed that he must have thought she was crazy.

“Look, I know you don’t put much stock in anything out of the ordinary…the  way you reacted to that fortune teller is evidence of that, but I was only joking. There’s no need to react like I’m some kind of crazy person.”

“No, it’s not that,” Colton said, clearly apologetic, “the question just caught me off guard.”

A strange silence came over them and Ana thought that he was going to say something revelatory but instead he remained in silence. She hadn’t thought the question was that strange but it was times like these when she knew that there was still much she needed to learn about Colton and how to interpret his moods. Things were normal when they got back to the apartment and for the rest of the week they enjoyed each other’s company immensely.

Angelica continued to pop in but there were no more awkward moments with Evan and Holly. She did consider introducing him to her parents but in the end she decided that it could wait because she didn’t want to put any undue pressure on him, and she wanted to cement their relationship first. They hadn’t spoken of anything serious yet because she wanted to let things develop naturally between them, and she could tell that despite his macho bravado Colton was quite vulnerable and she didn’t want to scare him off.

Instead she let things run their natural course. They made new plans every day for fun things to do, and he promised that if she wanted to travel he could arrange for them to go to various countries. He and Glenn were both humble but Colton loved living off the land and Ana found this to be appealing.

She was so joyously happy and whenever Angelica saw her she commented on this new change and how wonderful it was. She also said that she had taken a leaf out of Ana’s book and had spoken to the guy she was in love with, and had told him that she was planning to go back over there.
