Blake laughs and shakes his head. I want to grab him and look him in the eyes. I want to force him to admit that he’s being a jerk because he wants to protect me.

The doors open and we step into Blake’s place. Ben is already standing there, waiting. I look around quickly to see if there are any others, but he’s alone.
 

“God damnit, I told you not to be here.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I tell him. I tug on Blake’s sleeve.

“Maybe I should give you two a minute,” he says to Ben.

“Don’t get any ideas,” Ben says.
 

“I’m the one who wanted to come back here to get this over with. You and I want the same thing. So how about the two of you take a minute and I’ll get out of your hair.” Blake heads to the hall without waiting for a response.

“I don’t care what you think you have on him,” I tell Ben. “You’re wrong.” I see Blake slip into his study. Ben is already crossing the room.

“I’m trying to protect you. That’s all I’m trying to do. I could lose my job for being here right now. There’s a team coming to serve a warrant in twenty minutes. Cat, you can’t be here when they arrive, but you’re not giving me a choice. If anyone saw the two of you coming up, I could already be done.”
 

“What if I go willingly?” Blake asks. “You can cuff me and everything. Will that make a difference? You have nothing on me that will stick, and you won’t find anything here, but what if I give you something?”

“Blake,
no
!” I shout.

Blake is heading towards me now. He’s got the key hidden in his palm. “There’s a service entrance at the back of the unit. She can leave that way. The doorman will make sure she gets on her way without anyone taking note,” he says. He reaches me and wraps his arms around me. “Everything’s going to be fine.” He slides the key into my pocket as he kisses me.
 

A phone is ringing. It’s Ben’s. “Get her out of here,” he barks at Blake.

“I’ll come find you,” Blake says. “Just wait for me.” Then he whispers in my ear. “I need you Cat, more than you know.” He stares at Ben. “Keep her safe, and I’ll keep my half of the bargain.” Before I know what’s happening, Blake has me on the elevator, and the doors are closing between us, and I have nowhere to go but down.

When the doors open again, I’m in a lobby I’ve never seen before. A man in a suit is leaning against a marble wall. I try to think back to the last time I saw him. His face is bright red and he’s glaring at me. “You little bitch,” he growls. “Do you have any idea what you’ve gotten yourself into?”

My heart drops and I wonder if there’s any chance I can go back up to Blake’s and simply get arrested instead of dealing with this. I swallow hard and say the two words I’ve been dreading for weeks.
 
“Hi, dad.”
