Chapter One
If one more thing went wrong today, Miri was going to scream. When she arrived at the Lila M. Foster Shelter for Women & Children six hours ago her plan had been to be in the office for most of the day finishing up paperwork and ordering more supplies before heading home at seven. It was half past six and she hadn’t so much as touched a sheet of paper or ordered a roll of toilet paper. The shelter was at capacity and there were still three women and seven kids in need of a place to bed down for a while.
She shook her head. It was still unbelievable just how many women needed to escape abusive men in their lives. Every time a harried woman came through the doors, dragging a few kids behind her, Miri’s heart ached. These women had been through enough and her job was to protect them and help them build a life away from the abuse. She hated to turn anyone away so she sat behind the glass—bulletproof glass was a necessity in this business—and stared into the dull blue-grey carpet in search of a solution. There were no free beds, but she could use the convertible sofas in the recreation area. “Hey Amelia, you think we could move those sofas in the rec room to the sleeping quarters?”
The short blonde with the pink streaks rolled her chair over to the paper Miri drew on. “That’s a great idea boss! We’ll get at least eight people in those tonight.”
She smiled at her assistant director who was also her closest friend. “That’s what I was thinking too, but that still leaves one person without a bed.” She glanced at the women and took in their wary glances, battered bodies and inability to make eye contact. She would do everything in her power to give them a safe place to stay for as long as they needed it.
Well we do have a few port-a-cribs and bassinets in the storage room and at least two of those stinkers are still small enough for them.” Amelia stood and flicked her pink and blonde locks over her shoulder and went to put Miri’s plan into action.
“Thanks girl. Oh shit!” She was out of her seat and on the other side of the security door and glass within seconds of seeing the angry man charge into the waiting area. Her gaze went to the three women, frozen in terror at the sight of the screaming man. Miri waved them over while the man ranted. “Go on the other side of the door and press the red button under the computer closest to the glass. Keep the door locked until I tell you to open it and not a moment sooner. Got it?” A teary eyed brunette nodded and they herded the children behind the door.
“Yes,” she answered barely above a whisper and mouthed the words ‘thank you’ just before she disappeared behind the door.
“Sir what appears to be the problem?” Miri kept her voice calm and low just as she’d been trained to do in her crisis intervention classes. Guys like this spooked easily and didn’t respond well to being challenged.
“The
problem
is that my bitch of a wife left and took my boys with her. I want them back.”
Miri took in his stained t-shirt, unkempt beard and glassy red eyes. He was drunk and angry and without his punching bag. “Well I can’t tell you whether or not your family is here so I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”
“I don’t think so
bitch
. Get your black ass on the phone and bring them to me. They’re mine and I want them. Now!”
“That isn’t going to happen, so I suggest you leave.”
The angry man pulled a big silver gun from behind him and aimed it straight at Miri’s head. “Maybe you didn’t hear me. I said
go get my family
. Now, dammit.”
Miri’s heart pounded so loud that the angry man sounded very far away compared to the rush of blood that
swooshed
through her head. Black spots began to swim around the edges of her eyes and she knew she needed to keep it together, to keep oxygen flowing to her brain. “Gun or not, I can’t do it. The silent alarm has been tripped which means those doors have automatically locked and they won’t unlock until a police officer has been given the code to unlock it. Do yourself a favor and get out of here before you make things worse for yourself.”
He brushed by and shoulder checked her on his way to the front door. He pulled and handle, jiggled it and pounded it first with his fists and then the gun. He did the same thing to the bulletproof glass. “Caryn I know you’re back there you bitch. Get out here with my boys or you’re gonna regret it!”
Miri knew the woman. Caryn would come when called, no matter how much danger she or her kids were in. She was so obedient, Miri was surprised she’d even come for help. “Why should she come out here,
Karl
,” she sneered his name. “Do you have the urge to break her other arm or do you want to crack another rib on your
children
? Or is there another window that needs to be broken with Kyle’s little body?” She held her breath when he turned around with a menacing look on his face and slowly lifted the gun until it lined up with the space between her eyes.
“It don’t have to be their arms or ribs I crack,” he stepped close enough that she could smell the booze on his breath, “but I have you right here.” He lifted his meaty fist in the air and Miri braced herself while she pulled the taser she carried with her from her back pocket. “I’ll enjoy messing up this pretty face.”
He smiled a smile that told her he would enjoy every blow. “And I’ll enjoy sending enough volts through you to knock you on your ass.”
He laughed but Miri didn’t watch him, she watched the fist high up in the air. The moment it began its descent she hit the button that sent several prongs into his midsection along with fifty thousand volts. She took several large steps back as his large frame fell to the ground with a thud. “Amelia! Did you call the police and make sure the door,” all the air was knocked out of her when a man-sized bat slammed into the back of her body, sending her to the ground like a pile of bricks.
“You talk too much, you know that?” The large man was on top of her, his booze breath making her nauseous. He landed two punches to her back when he was knocked off by another man. Several hits to the face later and he was out cold.
“Are you alright, miss?”
Miri looked up into the most magnificent pair of green eyes she’d ever seen. They were serious and crinkled in concern but they were deep and rich and so beautiful she couldn’t look away. “Uh, yeah I’m fine. Good. Thank you.” She accepted the offered hand and stood, trying hard to ignore the warmth and the delicious scent of him as her hands trembled visibly. “Thanks again,” she stammered as she looked around to survey the damage. Without another glance to the man, Miri steps outside to wait for the police.
“I’m glad you’re okay.”
She smiled up at him. “Thank you so much for your help. I’m really grateful to you.”
“Don’t worry about it.” He smiled again, showing off his warm and handsome smile and waved as he walked away.
“Hey, what’s your name?”
He turned and walked backwards with a smile. “It’s Ryan.”
“I’m Miri, and I owe you a drink of your choice. Coffee, beer, martini, you name it.”
“Well I know how to find you when I’m feeling thirsty.”
Miri smiled at him until he disappeared from sight and turned her attention to the several squad cars that littered the parking lot.

Heart racing, Ryan strolled back to his office with a wide smile plastered on his face. He’d been walking by the shelter when he’d seen the big angry goon holding a gun to the head of the woman who had enchanted him for the past three months. But before the smile could brighten his face, his brain registered what was happening and he leapt to action. Well he’d
gone
into action at a fairly moderate pace because, while he wanted to help her and be her knight in shining honor, he had no frickin’ clue how to disarm a maniac with a gun.
But Miri—what a fun and whimsical name for such a sexy woman!—could more than handle herself. Before he could come up with a plan of action, the big oaf was falling to the ground like a cut log. He’d smiled, proud even though he had no right to be. Then his heart stopped beating when the man slammed into her and pushed her to the ground. Those punches landed on her and Ryan had seen red. As terrified as he was, for her, the image of the grateful smile spreading across that beautiful cocoa complexion brought a smile to his face.
“What the hell are you so happy about?”
He looked to his best friend and trusted sidekick as her pretty face contorted into an ugly scowl. “I found her!”
Casey’s frown quickly turned to a smile. “The mystery woman from the coffee shop? You found her?” He nodded. “How, and will I need to call the company attorney?”
He gave her a phony laugh. “You’re not funny.”
“Of course I am,” she said in a haughty voice. “I’m the funniest person ever.
Ever
.” She sat on the couch in his office, kicked off her shoes and crossed her legs so her feet were tucked under her lithe body. “Now tell me
everything
.”
He did. Ryan replayed the entire ordeal from start to finish while Casey sat with shocked blue eyes that were impossibly wide. She sat and listened, quieter than he’d ever seen her since she got her tonsils removed when they were twelve. “And then she asked my name because she wanted to buy me a drink. My choice.” His smile was proud and full of joy.
“Good. Be smart and choose a nighttime drink.” She pointed a long purple nail at him. “After one drink, maybe two you can say you’re getting hungry because you haven’t eaten all day and turn that drink into dinner.” She wiggled her eyebrows, making Ryan laugh.
“I’ll think about that, but first we need to hire security for the shelter. I want two guards on duty always. Two men, on twelve hour shifts so the doors are always covered.” Ryan paced back and forth while he thought, tossing out ideas for Casey to implement later. “Maybe we should get security doors. You go in one door and you can’t open the other until the first is closed, or just a buzzer? Find out which offers the most security.” The last thing he wanted was a woman and her children snatched by an abusive partner because they couldn’t get into the damn building.
Casey nodded and gave him a pointed look. “How are you going to get her to agree to this
and
keep your connection to the shelter quiet?”
Shit.
It was something he hadn’t really thought about but he didn’t want to tell Miri about that just yet. Ryan wanted her interest in him to be as a man. More importantly as a handsome and charming man she would like to spend time with. Not as a billionaire who owned the building and funded the shelter she ran. “You’re going to have to donate the security.”
“What! Are you crazy, Ryan?” She crossed her arms and aimed a menacing glare his way. “Sorry I’m not giving up two hundred grand a year just to help you get laid. No.”
Ryan glowered. “You know this isn’t about getting laid, Case. No matter what happens or doesn’t happen with Miri, they need this. The guy aimed a gun at her head, do you not get that?”
She held up her hands to stop the oncoming tirade. “Look I get that, okay and I’m sorry. You give me the money and I’ll donate it in my name or as an anonymous donor. Either way the women and children will be protected.”
“Good. Fine. Thanks.” He was distracted by thoughts of Miri’s perfect pink lips.
“You know if you want, I could have Bruno and a few of his guys seek this guy out.”
“No way, Casey. The police have it under control, leave your mobster out of it.”
Casey threw her hands up dismissively. “He isn’t a mobster Ryan, he’s a henchman. And he’d do anything for me.” She stood with her notepad. “Plus the police have it under control
now
. What happens if that dude comes back with an automatic weapon?”
“Ugh, Casey don’t say shit like that.”
She shrugged. “I’m just keeping it real Ryan. Guys like that don’t like to be challenged, especially by women. I guarantee this isn’t the last your girl has seen of that guy.”
Ryan’s shoulders sagged. He had to acknowledge the truth of Casey’s statement even if he didn’t want to. “I want those guards to start first thing tomorrow.”
“You got it, boss.” Casey saluted him and walked out of the office with a smug smile.
Ryan turned to look out the window. From his office the women’s shelter looked like a small speck of cement. It was a haven for battered women and children and he felt it was his greatest achievement to date.
