Before
she could recover, Alrek had flipped her over and now leaned over her. “Next
time,” he promised. “I shall see your pleasure properly.”

He
skimmed a finger over her mouth. The scent of her arousal hung heavily upon his
fingertips. “Taste yourself.”

She
darted a tongue out to sample the tangy cream. His look of desire had her
circling his tips with her tongue before drawing one finger in. He snapped the
fingers away suddenly.

“You
are greedy, woman,” Alrek declared then placed the finger into his own mouth.
He moaned. “Tastes like ambrosia.”

“I
am greedy, Alrek,” she agreed. “Greedy for your cock. Please will you not fill
me? Fuck me and take all I can give?”

“I
will. I shall. But, alas, I am greedy too.” With that, he dropped his head to
her breasts and kissed his way between them.

His
fair head against her skin made her body tight with need. Heat rolled through
her, ignited by the fire in her belly. A fire only Alrek ever ignited now.

He
nipped her breasts and nipples. Even in the glow of the fire, she saw he had
left light red marks on her pale skin. The vague notion he was marking her
struck, but that could not be. Alrek would never claim just one lover, and
certainly not her.

“Esa,
what saddens you?”

Snapping
out of her thoughts, she forced a smile. “Nothing, but I do not have your cock
in me yet.”

“I
have not made you ready.”

“Alrek,
I am more than ready. Stretch me, take me, fill me. Please. I can wait no longer.”
To punctuate her need, she scrabbled her nails over his shoulders and back in
an attempt to draw him between her thighs.

Coming
up onto his arms, he hung over her. His hair trailed down like a curtain,
shielding them from the world. His steel gaze bore into hers. Air trapped in
her lungs. There would be no going back after this. Alrek seemed to want to
communicate this with his serious expression. Esa suspected things would never
be the same again once she’d felt his heat spearing into her.

“You
are too beautiful,” he told her. “I almost cannot bring myself to do it. You
should be put upon a throne and looked at but never touched.”

Neinn
,
do not say that, Alrek. Never touched? Please, I cannot bear it.”

“But
I am a man and you are a woman in need,” he continued. “I would fulfil that
need as a man should.”

.”
She smoothed her hands over his shoulders and down to his rear. Cupping the
firm muscle, she dug her nails in. “I am in need, Alrek. In grave need.”

“I
would fulfil that need,” he murmured again and Esa suspected he was talking to
himself as he lowered onto her.

His
heavy weight and heated skin made her cry out his name. The crisp hair rubbing
her nipples made her arch into him. With his weight supported on one hand, the
other gripped around her thigh and pulled her further apart for him. The smooth
tip of him brushed her wet heat and she nipped his neck in encouragement. He
nudged against her and his rear tightened as he pressed forward. Though slick
with desire, it had been so long since she’d had such a large cock in her, her
body resisted. But it only made the pleasure more intense. She felt each inch
of him slide into her, slowly and carefully.

When
fully buried in her, Alrek kissed her hard and began to move. She stared at the
fierce warrior, drawn in by the emotion that seemed to sit behind his gaze. If
he treated every lover like this, it was no wonder the woman of the village
adored him so much.

“Esa,
you are so tight and wet. Your cunt is a perfect fit for me. I shall lose
myself if I am not careful.”

“Lose
yourself then, Alrek. I care not.”

She
was lost already. Lost to a world of pleasure and something else—something warm
and fulfilling. He picked up speed, thrusting into her with abandon. She met
his movements with the clench of her hands and the raising of her hips. The
straw of the bed crackled, the fire popped and the slap of skin against skin
rang in her ears.

Her
orgasm hit suddenly. No sweet build awaited her. Just a large explosion of
pleasure as he buried his large shaft so deep she might have felt him in her
stomach. She clung onto him as he drew it out with several firm thrusts. Esa
shuddered and closed her eyes when the pleasure clouded her vision. When she
drew them open, she sucked in several breaths, grateful Alrek had not yet come.
She longed to see it.

Legs
wrapped around him, she urged him on. “Come for me, my Viking warrior. I need
your seed.”

His
tortured expression set her heart alight and she continued to run her hand over
his slick muscles as his thrusts grew erratic. He tensed and she felt him pulse
inside her. He groaned her name and pulled out. Hot spurts of cum spilled onto
her belly and lower as he milked himself over her cunt. The sight of his sticky
liquid on her skin and pussy sent thrills through her, yet she felt empty. She
longed to be filled properly by him—a ridiculous thought for she could never
have a child with him, no matter how much she longed for a babe.

He
collapsed next to her and cradled a breast in one large palm. His head rested
in the crook of her shoulder and he appeared strangely vulnerable. His breaths
grew heavy and the hand on her breast stilled. This was not what she’d expected
when she’d offered herself to him. Her heart stretched for him—her good friend
and now lover. The thought of him visiting another’s bed on the morrow sent
shards of jealousy through her. And he appeared reluctant to leave her. She had
anticipated him helping her clean up, dressing and leaving. Esa dreaded the
moment but now he lay asleep, his fierce features relaxed and vulnerable.

Esa
drew in a long breath. She feared very much that their time together had done
more than satisfy an urge. It had broken down her barrier and drawn the truth
from her heart. She loved Alrek—a man who would never be truly hers.

Chapter
Three

Alrek
awoke to the sounds of gentle breaths and the feel of supple skin beneath his
fingertips. He took a moment to get his bearings before drawing himself up onto
an elbow. He studied Esa’s hair streaming against the furs and the delicate up
tilt of her nose and lips. Colour still sat in her cheeks. A satisfied woman.

At
some point, she had wrapped the furs about herself but he did not think she had
moved since their copulation. Did his seed still mark her? He had longed to
spill inside her but he could not shame her by leaving her with child, no
matter how much he longed to.

Sweet
Esa. She was so giving in bed. The perfect Viking woman. A fierce heart beat
beneath that chest, he knew that much. Once she had decided she wanted him, she
did not mask her desire and he admired that. Esa was not one to play games or
to manipulate. Her only flaw was she had once been married to Rennir.

Alrek
shook his head.  Had it not been for Rennir, he would have taken Esa for
himself long ago, but that could not be. The woman still grieved and he was not
good enough for the likes of her. While he might be useful to her in bed, he
was not husband material.

He
slipped out of bed and set another log on the fire. Alrek dressed and peered
out, relieved to see the rains had eased and night was upon them. The roof had
held up and he was no longer needed here. He skimmed his gaze over the sleeping
woman once more, regret stabbing into his gut. What he would not give to remain
for the night, waking her with his cock and fingers, making her cry out into
the night.

Or
maybe even stay forever.

Before
he could weaken, he crept out and headed back to his hut, near the bank of the
river. He liked living there. He saw everyone who came and went. Nothing
slipped past him and should anyone attack, he would be the first to greet them.
They had been lucky to have witnessed little bloodshed. Ever since the
expedition group went missing, they had been short on men to defend the
village. One day, maybe they wouldn’t be so lucky. While the women thought him
a bold warrior, he knew different. Age and his injury meant he was not as
strong or as fast as he once was. Against many powerful foes, he would have
little chance of defending the women and children of the community.

He
had finished making a fire when a light tap sounded at his door. He eased it
open to see Yrsa standing outside.

“Alrek,”
she cooed. “I came to you earlier but the women said you were at Esa’s
repairing her roof even though it has been raining for most of the day.”

He
opened the door and ushered her in. Yrsa was a beautiful woman with a bold
tongue. She too had been widowed by the expedition but Alrek doubted she felt
much devotion to her husband. She had approached him only a season or so after
the men were declared gone for good. While he enjoyed his time with her, she
left him feeling empty. Unlike Esa.

“I
did not know you intended to come to me this day.”

“Alrek,
you do not seem pleased to see me.” She pursed her lips. “It is Esa is it not?”

“I
do not know what you mean.”

“You
long for Esa. Did you lie with her this day? I do not know what else you could
have been doing inside her hut for so long.”

“Yrsa,”
he warned. He did not like the thought of Esa being subjected to the talk of
the women.

“It
is all right, Alrek. Everyone knows of the devotion you feel for her.”

“They
do?” he spluttered. Even he hadn’t been sure of how he felt until he had laid
with her.  But after burying himself in her sweet, hot cunt, he knew for
certain that he loved her with every part of his soul. And now not even the beautiful
Yrsa could appease his need.

“Esa
deserves a good man and many children. By the gods, this village needs more
boys. You would be wise to take her as yours and fill her. You do your duty to
us every day yet you have not given our settlement any more sons and—” Yrsa
smiled “—
you
deserve much happiness, Alrek.”

“I
am happy.”

She
shook her head and her smile tilted. “I shall miss you as a lover, Alrek. I
wish you and Esa much happiness.”

Alrek
scowled and folded his arms. She opened the door and paused to brush a kiss
across his lips.

“You
are a fine warrior, Alrek, and an even better lover. I shall pray to the Gods
for sons for you.”

He
huffed. There would be no sons. Not with Esa and now he suspected he could not
even take another lover. If Yrsa had figured him out, so would the other women
and none would offer themselves to him again. Not that any of them appealed
now. He leant against the doorframe and watched her go. A flash of something
caught his eye, darting between the huts.

With
little time to think on it, he snatched his sword. His heart raced. Was it the
enemy? Someone here to pillage and rape? He raced to the spot where he’d seen
the figure. Up ahead in the gloom, he could just make out a figure. Alrek
sprinted to catch up with the cloaked person. He snatched the fur and hauled
them back. A feminine shriek rent the air as he slammed her against a hut wall.

He
dropped his sword as Esa stared up at him, fear and tears shimmering in the
moonlight.

“I
could have killed you! Why are you sneaking around?”

“Forgive—”
Her words split on a sob.

“Do
not cry,” he snapped. What if he had thrust his sword without thinking? By the
gods, he might have killed her. Esa had not only worked into his heart but now affected
his head. He had a duty to protect and he nearly failed in that duty.

“I-I
did not mean to—I was not sneaking…”

More
sobs and Alrek regretted his harsh words. “Be quiet now, Esa. You do not need
to cry.” He cursed his inability to offer her the comfort she needed but he
still felt too raw and open to take her into his arms. “You should be abed. It
is too dangerous for you to be out at night.”

“Yrsa
was.”

“Yrsa
is not you.”

Neinn
.”
She sniffled. “
Neinn
, she is not. I suppose you shall have very brave
and bold sons.”

He
let his brow furrow and crossed his arms. “Sons?”

.
She said she would pray for them. I am sure you shall be blessed.”

Had
he pushed her too hard and hurt her head? What was the woman talking about?
“What do you mean? I shall be having no sons.”

“I
do not understand, Yrsa said—”

“Merely
that she wishes me well.”

“So
you are not having a child with her?”

Alrek
released a mirthless laugh. “
Neinn
, I am not. I cannot bring sons into
the world, Esa. You know that.”

Esa
gave a shuddering breath. “I thought…” She shook her head and peered at him. “You
think because you are a few summers older and your leg gives you pain that you
do not deserve such things? I am sure they shall bring you much joy.”

“I
cannot have sons, Esa,” he repeated. “How am I to protect them?”
