Kissing her, his lips fierce against hers, sensations mingled as his tongue slid into her mouth to intimate the same rhythm of his hips as he thrust his cock deep inside her. If his mouth hadn’t swallowed it, she would have cried out loud enough to wake the whole house, not just the baby.
His chest rumbled and she knew he was laughing. Well, maybe she should show him how hard it was to maintain control, when someone was making them feel as if they want to explode into a million pieces. She began by slipping her hand between their bodies, and cupping his balls, her nails scraping his skin lightly, but it was enough to make his breath hiss as he broke their kiss.
“Don’t wake up the baby,” she teased.
“Then we’d better be quick.” He pulled back, and then slammed into her, burying himself completely inside her. Placing his hand under her bottom, he held her close, impaling her on his hardness again and again, until he exploded inside her, taking her with him as her orgasm hit her.
Waves of pleasure cascaded over her, peaking in intensity, before fading away to leave her utterly spent, but utterly satisfied.
“I couldn’t have wished for a better mate,” she said, kissing his skin and breathing in the scent of him.
“Neither could I,” he said, hovering above her, brushing her hair back from her face. “I also can’t wait to get home, and start our new life.” As if on cue Connor woke. Beau got out of bed, dragging on his clothes, and saying, “You stay there, I’ll feed him.”
“No. I’ll get up too. I’d like to get on the road. Put all this behind us.” Although she knew it would take some time, the sooner they began to build their new lives, the better.
“And to think two days ago, I was happy to wallow in my pain, and spend my life as a bear.”
“Get used to it buddy,” she said as he left the room. “You’re a daddy now.”
You’re a daddy now.
He smiled as those words repeated in his head. He was standing admiring the new nursery, where Connor would be sleeping as soon as it was properly aired, and where one day the child he had made with Elise would sleep.
Elise’s laughter drifted up through the open window, and he walked over to look outside to where she was playing with Connor, who was desperately trying to take his first steps. The sight made his heart swell; they had healed him, in a way he never thought possible. There was no way he could thank them for that, other than to be the best husband and father he could be.
Which reminded him…
He went to his sister’s room, and after a moment’s hesitation, opened the door. It had been a long time since he had been able, or even wanted, to step inside, but this was important. He had spoken to his brothers, and they had agreed with what he wanted to do. Yet it still felt as if he was stealing.
A deep breath and he took a step forward, it felt as if he had broken through a wall, that was the amount of effort it took to walk across to her dresser. There he opened the jewelry box, it had a ballerina inside, which went around and around, playing a tune. It still worked.
He stood for a moment, listening to it, tears in his eyes. Then he took the small ring box from it, and closed the lid, placing the jewelry box down in exactly the same place he had picked it up from. Beau was not ready to change anything. Not yet.
Backing out of the room, he closed the door, and then turned to head downstairs. He took the stairs two at a time, the small box in his hand an electrical charge, driving him towards Elise.
“There you are,” Elise said as he walked across the grass to her. She was sitting on a picnic blanket, with Connor next to her, they were watching the birds, Connor pointing at them and telling Elise in great detail all about them in his baby babble.
“I have something for you.” He knelt down on one knee, and her face went white.
“Beau. You don’t have to…”
“Yes. I do. Elise. And Connor. Will you marry me?”
“Yes!” Elise said, and flung her arms around him, kissing his cheek a hundred times.
He laughed and turned his face to capture one of those kisses on his lips. “Thank you.” He opened the box and took out the ring. “It was my mom’s.”
“Oh Beau.” Tears misted her eyes, and he took the ring out and slid it onto her finger. “It’s yours now. Forever.”
“Forever,” she agreed.
His hand slid down over her stomach, where the small baby bump reminded him of just what forever meant. A wife, a child and a family. As they sat together watching the clouds pass overhead, he was sure he heard a whisper on the wind, his sister’s voice, telling him to make the most of this life and to let her go.
And in that moment, he did.
