Appendix B: Over-the-Counter Headache Medications

The following table lists the most common over-the-counter headache medications and their composition. You may compare medications, for example, by their caffeine content and whether they contain acetaminophen or aspirin. By knowing how much of a compound these medications contain, you can compare their relative strength and their likelihood of giving you discomfort if you are sensitive, for example, to aspirin.

Note: Pseudoephedrine is a vasoconstrictor (blood vessel constrictor) of the upper respiratory tract; as a result, it helps shrink swollen tissues in the sinuses and nose.
