Chapter Fifty-One

It wasn’t the impact of the
ground that had me doubled over in pain. McKayla metaphorically gripped me
around the throat and pushed my head down as she tried to fill her essence in
all the spaces within my body.

We were no longer a team. She was
fighting for all she was worth for total domination. Whatever Rowen had done to
me, had left me weak. I felt myself sliding in the background as shouts rang
out from my friends.

“Moll… Molly!” Tristrom cried
out. I pried open my eyes, holding onto my remnants of control. “Rowen, can you
help her.” His voice was frantic.

A cry of agony rang out, and I
wasn’t entirely sure it wasn’t me.

“Rowen, can you help her?”
Tristrom pleaded as he cradled a body, I assumed was Molly.

Then his eyes exploded with large
pools of white around the irises in shock. “What the hell!” Tristrom shouted.

Her body convulsed as if she were
having seizures. If Molly died, I wasn’t sure how Tristrom would handle it. As
much as my heart hurt for them both, my eyes sought out Flynn wondering how he
was fairing. I wasn't sure if he was on death’s door, but I knew he wasn't out
of the woods either. I saw Rowen on the ground first. I only knew it was him by
the patches of green clothing against brown leather. His face wasn’t visible to
me.

Next to him, I saw a bloody foot.
The blackened hole near the ankle gave away Flynn’s identity. He was leaning on
his forearms when our eyes met. I tried to smile, but I lost all control.

My body went taut as if I was
being pulled by both ends. I was submerged when more shouts pierced the air.

“Rowen… What the he—” Tristrom
hollered.

 “Shit!” Flynn’s alarm would have
had me scrambling to my feet if I had still owned by body. “Mercy, baby, you’ve
got to get up.”

If there had been time, I might
have smiled at Flynn calling me baby, but the next word changed the game.

“McKayla.” It was said like a
declaration.

My demon responded. She got,
pulled to her feet by the string sin that one word. Through the portholes of my
eyes, I saw with horror who stood in front of me. Green eyes burned out in a
red flame.

If I had not seen the final
flicker of change from one guy into the other, I would have thought Sebastian
had materialized in that way he could. But he stood in Rowen’s clothes, and I
had caught the last of the change. Sebastian was Rowen. Rowen had been
Sebastian’s disguise in Fairy. I should have guessed it, if not by Belial visit
to Madeline,  but by Rowen’s own words. He kept telling me he’d keep me safe.
Hadn’t Sebastian said that to me more than once that he’d been the one to save
me time and time again? And then another puzzle piece clicked. Grandfather had
mentioned ‘guys’ in the same thought as Sebastian. Had he meant Sebastian was
coming for me ‘disguised’, but I only heard pieces of the word and sentence?

Sebastian held out a hand. “Come
to me.”

McKayla was all too eager to
comply. I wasn’t sure why? She’d help me stab him the other day. Then I felt
the compulsion pull us forward.

“No, Mercy don’t!” Flynn
demanded.

She glanced down at him and gave
me a view of Flynn trying to get to his feet. The holes had not closed from
where the icy nails had been driven through him like spikes on a cross.  The
torment in Flynn’s eyes had me fighting back.

I pushed with everything I had
including my love for my family and friends. My resolve rock solid gave me the
upper hand. My foot stepped back as I won the battle. I was in control, not
McKayla.

Sebastian’s eyes went from
crimson to hell fire gold. His lip curled in a snarl. And I fought for another
step and another. My eyes darted to Flynn, who was more than a little helpless
at the moment. I needed to draw Sebastian to me. I prayed he wouldn’t take out
his anger on anyone else.

Flynn’s eyes grew wide, and I
looked away knowing what I had to do. Hadn’t it come to this? It was time that
I paid for my sins.

“Come get me,” I called out as
Sebastian gaze began to drift in Flynn’s direction.

Fathomless eyes focused directly
on me. Then Sebastian moved like a racehorse out of the gate. I glanced at
Flynn one last time to see fear replaced by sorrow.

My back met a solid chest, and I
glanced down to see feet clad in sandals that reminded me of what the
Gladiators’ wore in the movie The 300. I’d seen someone dressed this way
before.

There was that surreal moment
when I guessed at Flynn’s fear. Jonah, Luke’s father, had come for me too. He
was here to give me bad news and make me pay for his son’s loss. Just as well.

All Sebastian had to do was make
contact, and he could blink me to anywhere in the world or underworld. As he
got within touching distance, I heard a sword being unsheathed.

Sebastian’s arms reached out
towards me as he said, “I will have you…”

His mouth opened, but only a
soundless roar was released before several things happened. In a split second,
a slice through the air had Sebastian pinned like a bug science project. As his
eyes lost their fire and returned to the vacant blue, Sebastian said, “Mercy,”
as if he was confused by what happen. It was as if, before he disappeared in a
cloud of vapor, he had become the boy I knew.

With Sebastian was gone, I had an
unobstructed view of Flynn’s horrified face. I glanced down again unable to
hold his gaze and took a step forward. I avoided Flynn’s stare as I slowly
turned, ready to accept my fate. I followed the sandaled feet to straps of
leather that hung down bound around a waist. Then to leather that completely
covered a chest leaving strong arms bare. But it was the face that was so very
angelic.

Summer blue eyes met mine. And
this time it was real. He was here.
