“
I’m glad to see
congratulations are in order, cousin.” Dainton hugged Greta when
they arrived before them and shook Hansel’s hand.
After the greeting was passed, Hansel
took a breath. Then another one, not sure how to say the words
rolling through his mind.
Greta stroked along his palm of the
hand she still held. Her supportive gesture calmed him.
“
Ebony, I’d like to
introduce myself.”
Ebony’s eyebrows rose, then she looked
from him to Greta and finally toward her mate.
Dainton shrugged.
When the pretty mocha-skinned female
with the gray streak in her hair, similar to their father’s, met
his gaze again he went on.
“
I’m Hansel Haskin and I’m
your brother.”
“
What?” Dainton and she
both responded simultaneously.
Hansel drew confidence from Greta,
slipping her arm around his waist. He began to explain the
situation around his parents’ death. Why they were in the woods
outside of Yosemite. How and why they were killed.
Ebony first listened as her features
relaxed with curiosity lighting her gaze. It soon turned to
sadness, then hope as her eyes filled up with water and tears began
to run along her cheeks as she listened. Dainton held Ebony
close.
“
I thought you were dead
with them. I didn’t know the campers had performed a laymen’s
C-section.” He held his hand out and waited.
His sister slipped her hand into
his.
“
From the moment I met
you, you were familiar to me, but I didn’t understand why. But,
when I saw you with the little guy just a few moments ago I knew.
You’re the spitting image of your mother in looks and mannerisms.
Except that gray streak you inherited from our father.”
“
Dainton, could it really
be?” Ebony gazed at her mate for confirmation.
Staring at her lovingly, Dainton
assured her, “It sounds like it.”
Hesitant, Ebony stepped toward him. “I
have a brother…family.”
Pulling her into a fierce hug, Hansel
held her. His sister. Over her shoulder he saw his mate wiping
tears from her eyes as she leaned against her cousin and observed
them.
It amazed him how empty his life had
been and now he had love in abundance, he was no longer alone.
Things would be different for him from here on out.
I love you,
Blackberry.
I love you,
mate.
