The doctor gave her a sedative to calm her down and almost immediately she fell asleep.

When she awoke the young nurse that was with her the night she came into hospital; was sitting beside her bed. Seeing Sam

s eyes open she smiled and said:

“Well hello there. Someone had a good sleep.” Sam forced a smile and automatically put her hand over her stomach. The nurse said gently. “He’
s still there. Tough little guy!” Sam looked at her in disbelief; Jay

s baby was hanging on.

“Jay!” She whispered. The nurse looked at her, her eyes full of pity. In the three days, she was here not one visitor.
Poor cow!

“I need my phone.” Sam said. She had to call Jay. She had to hear his voice. He would make everything ok again.

“Lovey, you didn’t
have anything with you when you came in. Only the clothes you wore.”  Sam groaned. She had run out of her apartment and left Dan there. No one knew where she was. Did Lisa come back and find Dan there? If she did, what did Dan tell her? Did Jay call? Her head hurt. There were so many questions but she had no answers. All she knew was she needed Jay, needed to have him wrap his arms around her and hold her close and tell her everything would be alright.

“Nurse, when can I get out of here?” Sam asked.

“Call me Monica, and honey, you’
ll be able to go home in a few days. Is there anyone you want me to call for you?” She took Sam

s wrist and checked her pulse.

“I don’
t think so. Thanks Monica.” Sam forced a smile but she was hurting inside emotionally. She felt so alone and was so afraid.

**************

After she was allowed to leave the hospital, Sam waited until she was sure that Lisa would be out before she went to the apartment. She packed a small case with some clothes and packed her makeup. She found her phone. There were no missed calls and no texts. Sam pressed the answer machine. There were no messages either. Jay hadn

t called her. The familiar pain in her heart returned. Why hadn

t he called? Sam knew he was in the studio recording and he was writing some new material for the album. He would call when he had a chance. When he did, she would tell him about the baby. He would be delighted.

She closed the case and scribbled a note for Lisa to tell her she was taking a break for a few days and she would call her soon.

Sam didn’t want Lisa to see her like this. The bruises on her face and the pain she was in. She was sure that Dan, when he realized what he had done would be long gone out of the city. Sam knew she wouldn’t see him again.

She picked up her case, jacket and her purse, looked around the apartment, checked she had everything and left. Sam would go to her parents’ holiday home in Brittany, France. She would stay there and rest. Then when her bruises had healed, she would return to London.

She awoke to the sound of rain belting against the window. Strangely but it was a very soothing sound. A smile crossed her face as she sat up and threw her legs over the side of the bed. She felt queasy but Monica, the nurse assured her it was normal and she advised her to have weak tea and dry toast.

Sam went into the kitchen and filled the old kettle and put it on the antique gas cooker. She received two text messages from Lisa and she seemed to buy the excuse that Sam gave her about needing some time to herself. But she still had heard nothing from Jay. Lisa didn’t mention if he called either. Sam guessed that he must be very busy. He did tell her, when she was in LA with him, that he became absorbed in his writing and his music when he was recording. She smiled as she thought of him. She could almost smell his aftershave. Oh how she missed him.

The whistling of the kettle brought her back into the kitchen. Sam smiled as she thought of the last time they were together, in Pete

s villa on Crete; where she got pregnant. Fondly she put her hand on her stomach. She knew she needed to call him and tell him but this wasn

t something she could tell Jay on the phone. Sam knew that she would have to tell him in person but it would take several weeks now before she could travel to LA. The bruises had faded and now make up covered the remaining dirty yellow mark on her left cheek just under her eye.

***************

Jay was in the pool when his phone rang. Since he got back from Crete he had been working nonstop at the studio and now on the only day he allowed himself off the phone rang. He knew it wasn

t Sam as it was too late and she was attending a dinner party with Lisa.

The persistent ringing made him swear as he got out of the pool. He grabbed a towel and put it over his shoulders.

“Yeah.” He said gruffly. He was feeling a little pissed off.

“Told you, she wasn’
t worth it,” remarked a strange voice on the other end of the line.

“Who is this?” Jay was trying to recognise the voice but couldn’t
place it.

“Gay boy, I fucked her and she’
s pregnant! You sucker! You

re not the first-”

“Listen you sick sonofabitch. Get over yourself, Sam is with me now. So fuck off.”

“She’
s pregnant with my kid gay, boy you

ll be raising my kid.” Dan began to laugh loudly. Jay swore and threw the phone on the table. This guy had been a fucking thorn in his side since he got together with Sam.

But if she was pregnant by this guy there was no fucking way he was going to stay with her. Brandi had swore to him that her kid was his, he stupidly believed her until she had the kid and the dates were all wrong. He went inside.

As he pulled on his jeans, he heard the phone outside ring again. Fuck it, it can ring. There was no way now, that he was going to call her. And there was definitely no way, he was going to have her move in here with him and raise another man

s kid. Did she think he was stupid? Fucking bitch played him. Thought she landed on her feet when the rock star fell in love with her and asked her to move in with him in his mansion. Share his life.

He picked up the keys to his Porsche and got in and drove off fast. Jay pulled up outside Nick

s place and turned off the engine. He had a damn pain in his chest where his heart was breaking. But he wasn

t going to go down the road of heartbreak here. Not for a stupid gold-digger like Sam.

“Hey man!” Nick said as he came out and saw Jay sat on the hood of his car. They slapped each other on the arm. Nick saw that his friend wasn’
t in a great mood.

“Hey, want to go and get drunk and pick up some strippers?” Jay asked as he went around and opened the door of the Porsche. Nick jumped in beside him and he tore off out of the driveway leaving a trail of dust.

It wasn

t until they were seated at a bar on the Sunset Strip drinking a beer, that Nick asked him what was up. Jay ordered another round and some chasers. He turned to Nick and said:

“Fuckin bitch played me man.” He downed the chaser and ordered another.

“Sam? How?” Nick asked. Jay downed two more chasers. And he turned around to look at the dancer making out with the pole.

“She’
s been havin it off with her ex all this time. Fuckin bitch is pregnant with his kid.” He downed another chaser. “Geeze, man I was gonna marry her.” He turned back to the bar and took a long gulp from the beer bottle.

“Man you sure? That guy was pretty fucked up the last time we saw him.” Jay shook his head. “Forget her man, drink up and let’s go.” Nick hit his bottle off his and they downed the contents in two gulps and left the bar.

The next morning, Jay

s head was spinning. He couldn’t get out of bed. He was due at the studio in half an hour but he could hardly move. The shrill sound of the phone ringing cut through his head like a sabre.

“Yeah,” he managed to sound human. A loud laugh on the other end said.

“Man you sound like you had one hell of a party!” It was Steve.

“Give me an hour and I’
ll be there. OK Man!” Jay hung up. He was being optimistic. He managed to get to the bathroom and have a shower. He wrapped a towel around his waist and came back into the room. As he pulled on his boxers, he caught a glimpse of a photo of him and Sam; she had her chin resting on his shoulder and her arms around his chest. Her long auburn hair falling over his left shoulder, she was laughing and his mouth was inches from her cheek. They both looked so happy. She was so beautiful. He had fallen so badly for her. The first time he

d seen her, he knew he wanted to make her his. And there was nothing he wouldn’t do to get her.

Picking up the photo frame he carried it into the bathroom and threw it into the bin. Fuck her! He hoped she rotted in hell.

Jay grabbed the keys to his car. The phone rang again but he let the answer machine pick it up and left the house.

It had been a difficult session at the studio; Jay just couldn’t get his guitar riff right. His guitar was all out of tune and when he did manage to tune it he was dropping chords all over the riff. Nick called for a few minutes break. And went and got a strong black coffee for Jay.

“Here man, get this inside you.” He gratefully took the cup and drank it. He was so damn hung over there was no way that he could do anything today. But they were on a deadline here and he had to force himself to focus on the album. He went to the restroom.

As he opened the door, one of the sound engineers was inside bent over the sink. Jay knew what he was doing. He went into the cubicle. He flushed the toilet and went to wash his hands.

The guy looked up and offered him some. “Hey man, want to try? It

s good shit!”

He walked over to him and looked longingly at the three perfect lines; he certainly could use some of that right now to help to ease the pain he was feeling. Just a line would do it. But he wasn

t sure how he would react to it. Just before he went into rehab, he had a bad reaction but it was to do with some pills he had been using earlier. He asked:

“You have any in a bag for later?” The guy laughed and pulled out about twenty little button bags. Fuck, he was like a drug store, Jay thought. He threw two bags at Jay and he pulled out a couple of hundred dollar bills and threw them at the sound guy. Quickly he put the bags in his pocket.

Just then Nick burst in and looked at Jay and the three lines of coke on the sink.

“Shit man, don’
t fuckin do it. No bitch is worth that!” Jay looked with contempt at Nick and stormed out of the restroom.
