“On board HMS Intrepid. They're taking us to East Timor. From there we'll fly to the UK, and then Oxford to the burns unitâprobably doing that last bit via the air ambulance.”
“Burns unit? Jael, are you hurt?”
“No. Well, I have a couple of broken ribs, which have been strapped up, but I'm not burned. Though Gunung Berapi did have a jolly good attempt at frying us a few times. No, it's Micah who's burned.”
Jael ran her finger over the ring on her left hand. Micah had promised to buy her one of her own as soon as he could. Right now she wore his mother's wedding ring. The same one he'd worn on the chain around his neck and never spoken about. It was a little loose, but she figured she'd simply get it altered and keep it.
Captain McGregor had done the simple ceremony as the sun set. Wilhelm had recorded it on Jael's phone. Micah had promised her a church blessing as soon as possible.
“Micah? That the pilot I spoke to?”
Jael grinned. “Yeah, umm about that. I have something to tell you, and I don't want you to freak out on me.”
“What have you done?” Kyle growled.
“I got married⦔ Silence greeted her. She could almost see her brother trying to figure out if she were kidding or not. “See the thing is, he kissed me, and local tradition has it that you can't kiss someone unless you're married to them and⦔
Kyle roared with laughter. “Nice one, sis. Now what have you really done?”
She sucked in a deep breath, biting her lip in pain. “I told you, I got married.”
“Seriously?” Kyle sounded shocked.
“Yeah. We'll have a church blessing once things settle down.”
“You are incorrigible. Talk about starting a new life as the world ends in a torrent of fire and brimstone around you. So when do I get to meet your husband and my brother-in-law?”
“In about two days. If I give you his dad's number, can you have him meet us there as well?”
Jael ended the call and made her way back to the infirmary. She washed her hands and slid into the chair beside Micah's bed. He lay face down, his back once again covered in plastic. She sat for a while, then pushed the stray lock of hair from his eyes.
His eyes flickered open and squinted. “Hey, honey. At least I think it's you. Can't tell without my glasses on.”
She gave them to him, then took his hand. “I didn't mean to wake you.”
The CMO came over. “Captain says we're about twenty minutes from docking. I need to start prepping Micah for the transfer.”
“OK.” She started to rise, but Micah didn't let go.
“I want her to stay. I don't intend to let her out of my sight ever again. Anyway, she's a nurse.”
The CMO looked at her. “Are you?”
Before she could reply, Micah did. “My wife is a quote ITU and theatre nurse extraordinaire. Unquote.”
She laughed. “I don't remember putting it quite that way.”
“OK, I'm paraphrasing. Whatever. Just shut up and kiss me, then let the doc do his thing. You promised to obey me, remember, honey?”
“Yes, my love.” Jael obediently shut up, leaned forward and kissed him.
