“Aside from the sleeping arrangements, are any of these
actual
rules?”

“Do they need to be? I can say ‘be home by dark’ if you want. I’d rather trust you to use your best judgment and try to let us know when you won’t be around for dinner.”

She broke into a grin. “That works for me.” Picking up the pen, she sighed with pure happiness. She signed her first legal document with no reservations.

Justin pushed the folder aside. “Girls, Claire is officially your big sister now.”

Missy squealed with delight and both girls jumped up and ran to attack her with pink and purple and unicorns and hugs.

“To celebrate,” Marie said, “Grandma and Grandpa have cake. We can go over there whenever we’re ready.”

“It’s okay, Drew. You can kiss her. Just keep your hands to yourself.” Justin’s last few words came out with a bit of a growl to them.

Claire laughed and let her new family embrace her. Whatever else might come, she knew she had a place to call “home.” Finally.

About the Author

Lee French lives in Olympia, WA with two kids, two bicycles, and too much stuff. She is an avid gamer and member of the Myth-Weavers online RPG community, where she is known for her fondness for Angry Ninja Squirrels of Doom. She is an active member of the
Northwest Independent Writer’s Association
and one of two Municipal Liaisons for the Olympia region of
