Sam’s eyes sparkled with mischief
.
“I cut a deal with Maggie years ago
,
right after Scott was born.”

“What kind of deal?”

"First you have to promise not to get mad.”

“This must
be
a good one,” she said dryly
.
“Okay, I promise
.
Out with it
,
Travis.”

“Well, it’s your fault really
.
When Scott was a year old, I told you I was ready for another baby and you wanted to wait

Anne stared at him in disbelief
.
“I gave in because Maggie convinced me she needed another baby to spoil!”

Sam pulled up to the emergency entrance
and
then came around to help her out
.
He lifted her in his arms and held her for a moment
.
“Are you
angry
with
me?”

Anne wrapped her arms around his neck
.
“I should be.

Sam kissed her softly
.
“You’d certainly deserve it if I was.

He kissed her again, longer, harder
.
“If I
refuse to
forgiv
e
you, will you keep
on
kissing me?”

Sam shouldered the door closed
.
“No, because you’ll never forgive me then.

He walked up the ramp to the hospital.

“Sam
?
Are you going to miss having babies?”

He stopped and gave her a sexy grin
.
“Not if we can still go to the beach house and pretend we’re trying to make one.”

Anne laughed and buried her face in his neck
.
“I sure do love you, Sam Travis.”

He glanced through the glass on the hospital doors and noted the flurry of activity
.
“They’ve spotted us,” he chuckled
.

Look
at them scramble.”

She lifted her head as he carried her through the door
.
By now the nurses were used to seeing Sam carry her in and knew when Mrs. Travis came to have a baby, they had very little time to prepare
.
Anne rubbed her belly
.
Judging by the
strength
of the contraction, the delivery room had better
be
prepped and ready to go.

Sam lowered her into the wheelchair and gave her a quick kiss
.
“See you in a minute, sweetheart.”

Familiar with the drill, he held out his arms and lifted a foot as one nurse
slipped on
a booty
while
another
helped him with a sterile
gown
.
He
lifted the other foot and held the face mask in place while a second nurse tied it for him.

“We’d better hurry, Mr. Travis,” one of the nurses said as she led him down the hall
.
“Your babies don’t wait for anyone, not even you.”

Less than an hour later, Sam was holding their son in his arms
.
Anne was propped up on pillows, her long hair splayed around her, a soft smile on her lips
.
He put the baby in her arms and kissed her.

“We make beautiful babies, don’t
we
, Anne?”

She looked down at the dark
-
haired boy in her arms
.
“Maybe we should
have
had just one more,” she
said, already regretting their decision to stop at six. But it was too late to change her mind now.
They’d tied her tubes
;
Adam would be the last.

“We can still pretend,” he reminded her.

Anne
looked up at him
, welcoming
the flame of desire
that was still as hot and hungry as it had been the first time they’d made love
. It was always there, flickering behind his dark eyes, burning for her, through her, inside her.
Always.
Forever
.

“Yes,” she whispered as his lips met hers
.

Making babies with Sam had been
amazing
, but pretending to make them put a whole new delicious spin on their weekend getaways
.
Oh yes, Anne thought as she
succumbed to the
intoxicating
effect of his
kisses
;
the gamble she’d taken on love had been worth it
. S
he’d
rolled the dice and
won the biggest jackpot of all
:
Sam.
