She looked him over, admired the hard muscles of his chest, the thick sausage between his legs. “Deal. You both can.” She leaned back on the bed, crossed her arms behind her head. “It’s going to be a long night, boys. You can sleep on the plane tomorrow.”

MANDA stood in the airport beside her dad. Tears streamed down her mom’s face as she gave Robbie one last hug. “You be safe, you hear me?”

“I will, Mom.” He squeezed her back. “I will.”

“Bye, Robbie,” Amanda said. “You come back to me in one piece.”

“Get over here.” He let go of her mom and caught her in his arms.

“I’m going to miss you,” she told him.

“I’ll miss you, too, sis.”

She let him go, wiped away a tear. “Be safe. You, too, Dylan.”

“I’ll try.” He grinned, shrugged, a picture of innocence.

“Alright, boys, you better get moving, or you’re going to miss your flight,” he dad said.

Robbie hefted his backpack and adjusted the straps. Dylan copied him. “Thanks for letting me stay with you folks. And thanks for all the memories.” He looked at her as he said it.

“It was our pleasure,” her mom said.

“Absolutely,” Amanda agreed. “You feel free to come back any time.”

They each waved goodbye, then jogged off down the corridor side by side.

“He seems like such a nice boy,” her mom said as they walked back out to the car.

“He is,” Amanda said. “He really is.”

It was going to be a long winter waiting on her brother to come back home again, but at least she’d been able to spend time with him. And it had been a good time. Good memories. Better than she’d expected, and almost as good as she’d imagined. Whatever happened in Afghanistan, whether it be to the boys or between the boys, nothing could ever take away those memories.
