After catching his breath, Rick wiped his bloody hands on the white sheets before coming close to me. “Are you okay?”
I backed up onto the bed away from him, suddenly ashamed.
He followed putting his arms around me, and I broke, crumbling against him crying. I wasn’t okay. Rick pulled out his cell phone and called the police as I came apart at the seams in his arms. “I killed him.” I heard him say to them.
It seemed like no time before paramedics were taking me away from Rick’s arms. “You’ll be okay.” He kissed my forehead.

Waking up in the hospital alone, my head throbbed, my cheek stung, my chest ached and my pelvic area, my vagina -I sobbed loudly because I couldn’t take the memory the deep discomfort caused. A woman in pink scrubs came to me, a nurse I decided. She said she would up my pain medicine. She showed me how to do it myself, so when she left I turned it up all the way.
The next time I woke to someone holding my hand. It was Molly. “Is he dead?” I managed.
“No, but I’m so sorry.”
I closed my eyes, ignoring her and fell back into a dreamless sleep.
I opened my eyes to my mother sitting with Molly. I wanted nothing more than to die. I closed my eyes again, but this time had a dream. Stephan wasn’t dead. He was hurt badly, his face a jumbled mess of swollen black eyes, a bandaged nose and cheeks. Dragging an I.V with him, he walked into my hospital room laughing at me. “I should have killed you.”
Sitting up when I woke this time, I noted a different room. There were flowers and Molly. A doctor was talking to her, and she nodded her head before saying, “I’ll take her home with me.”
“No,” I croaked. I couldn’t take it being around Stephan’s mom, in that house. “I’ll go home.”
“In a few days, if you are eating solid food.” The doctor touched my shoulder, and I flinched.
“What are you doing here?” I asked Molly. I didn’t think she’d be the one by my side. Where was Rick?
She opened her mouth but nothing came out.
I asked a better question. “Where’s Stephan?”
“Down the hall.” My pulse quickened. He really did come in here.
“And Rick?”
“In the County lock-up.”
“What? Why?”
Molly only patted my hand. “Why indeed?”
I blinked. What did she think happened?
“Stephan told me what happened. I don’t blame you. I never should have trusted Rick. He left me a day early, said he had to go back on account of business, but I should have known better.”
“You don’t know what happened,” I was going to throw up.
“Stephan says he walked in on Rick… taking advantage of you in my bed. That Rick beat him when he tried to stop him. Thank goodness, you called the cops.”
“I didn’t call the cops,” I shook my head confused.
“Rick tried to say my Stephan was the one raping you, and he thought he killed him in a fit of rage, but we soon found out the truth.”
“How?” I felt even sicker.
“Preliminary tests found faint traces of Rick’s semen in the samples they took… from you. That was enough.”
