I clear my throat and her red rimmed, glassy eyes find mine. She’s so damn beautiful, her hair piled on top of her head, her glasses trying to hide the tears threatening to spill down her cheeks.

This is why she didn’t answer the phone calls. She was on her way here.

To me.

“You got one too?” she whispers, eyeing the letter in my clutches.

“Yea,” I answer, nodding. She walks over to me and sits on the bed, stretching out her legs and sighing. Sitting on the bed next to her, I take notice of her small frame compared to mine. She has to have lost weight since the accident, I’m not sure I like where this is leading. There’s so much right now I want to ask her… so much I want to know… but I’m still processing what Lane’s letter just told me.

He knew. He’s known all along. He knew even before I really did.

“So… what’d yours say?” I hear the hesitation in her voice, like she’s not certain if she should ask me or not. I chuckle, because this whole situation is fucked up. I feel like I should be mad at him for taking my girl when he knew I wanted her, but I’m not. I don’t really care, because he’s right… I’m still here to pick up her pieces and he’s not. Simple as that. It might make me sound like a dick, but it’s the cold hard truth.

Taking a breath, I clear my throat and look over at her.

“He told me…” I trail off as I watch her face form an uncertainty. She’s so fucking beautiful, she doesn’t even know it. All she sees when she looks in the mirror is the damn part of her leg that’s missing. I fucking hate that, I plan on making damn sure she knows how that doesn’t define her. Clenching my jaw, I set the letter aside and turn to face her. Resting my hand on hers, I take a breath and say the words I’ve been too afraid to say for way too long.

The words I’d love to tell her, though, get stuck in my throat.

I can’t tell her what the letter said. We haven’t ever talked about the kiss that night, right now all I can think about it kissing her again. Giving her a
real
kiss… showing her how I feel instead of just telling her.

So I do.

Her soft lips push back against mine gently and hesitantly. The feel of her lip-gloss lips sliding across mine as I deepen the kiss fogs my brain and makes me completely forget what I shouldn’t be doing. My hand reaches the back of her head, I pull her closer to me. There’s no resistance, soon our bodies are as close as they can get without being on top of each other. Her soft moan makes me pull back and rest my forehead on hers, trying to find my breath again.

Holy shit.

I’ve kissed plenty of women. Hell, I’ve kissed Alexis before… but it never was like that. Never so emotionally charged. She wasn’t sure of herself the first time I kissed her. Hell, I wasn’t sure what I was doing back then.

Now? Now I’m sure I know what I’m doing… and she seems to be on the same page.

“Wow,” she whispers after she catches her breath.

“Yea,” I chuckle. “Wow.”

Book 3, the final installment of the Broken Promises Series

For Us

My life has been peaches and cream up until a few months ago when it was all ripped away. Not the type of destruction you can see coming, either. A type that takes everything from happy thoughts to mass chaos in mere seconds.
Now, I'm left to pick up the pieces of this mess.
Pieces, including my best friend's girl.
She's the girl I'd bring home to mom if I still had a mom. She's the girl I picture having Sunday dinners with at grandma's house if we did that shit.
But we don't.
All I know is this... she's the best damn girl I've ever known... and I'm a total tool for wanting her.
I'm Braydon Simms... and this is my story.

About the Author

An avid, self proclaimed closet book nerd by the age of nine, Dauphin didn’t take her love of fictional worlds public until she self-published her first book almost 20 years later. Since putting to paper the voices in her head, she’s fallen in love with a career of building, ruining, and rebuilding fictional character’s lives. Currently, she has self published two series, two full length novels, and two full length co authored books she’s written with her other half HQ Frost, as well as been involved with two anthology sets. Her love will always reside with the romance genre, but she does enjoy going off the grid every now and then with non-fiction.

From Southern Illinois, born and raised, she now resides with her husband, two small boys, and two very busy dogs.
