It’s like my nose is a GPS system.

And her tail was freaking her out. It sensed what was behind her and helped her regain her balance when she had to change directions abruptly. In college, she’d been taught that the sole function of a canine’s tail was to convey emotion. Science couldn’t have been more wrong. Her tail was a sensory organ, orienting her to the world around her.

On top of the dune, she stared up at the night sky, the moon glowing like a pearl. Becoming a wolf was indescribably awesome. She felt free. Strong. Safe. Powerful. This wasn’t a nightmare, it was a dream and Tao was right there to share it with her.

She howled at the moon, too excited not to shout for joy. Tao picked up on her mood and gave her a friendly head butt to the shoulder. Once she calmed down, they snuggled together and let the silver moonlight bathe them.

So many thoughts tumbled through her mind. She was a wolf. She had a mate and a fledgling pack, the big family she’d always wanted. Her life would never go back to what it had been. Despite all the violence, though, she wouldn’t change a thing because that would mean living without Tao, which was no life at all.

Burying her nose in Tao’s neck, she breathed in his essence. A profound sense of peace settled over her.
I’m a werewolf in love.
The thought surprised her and made her laugh, which came out as a huffing sound. Tao cocked his head, curious. She just smiled at him, tongue lolling out the side of her mouth.

Now
that
was a strange sensation. Audrey kept trying to slurp her tongue back in, but every time she opened her mouth, it flopped out. Long tongues were tricky things.

Audrey looked at the moon again, her thoughts focusing on her future. She and Tao had a long journey ahead of them. Not just starting their relationship, but building a pack and protecting all of Nick’s victims from the fallout of his bite. Plus, she still hadn’t made her tofu taco salad yet for Tao, and she was determined to vegan-ize him as much as possible. If he got to spank her, she sure as hell was going to fill his plate with tofu. On a more serious note, she wondered if Kai and Leo would find mates like their brother. They certainly deserved to.

Once, she’d caught Leo watching her and Tao with an expression of such longing on his face, it had made
her
feel lonely. Kai, of course, was oblivious to anything except his magic mojo, but Audrey felt the right woman might bring him down to earth and make him a little less weird. Maybe the lucky girl could even get him to speak English. Most importantly, she wanted Tao’s brothers to be happy, to find their other halves. They should have what she and Tao had. She hated how much they’d been ostracized in their pack. For all the horrible things Nick did, in the end, he’d given his brothers a chance to live a life without the stigma of being wolf-born.

She nuzzled Tao’s neck again.
Whatever happens, we’ll stand together. Tao’s at my side and I’m at his.
Lifting her head, she howled at the moon, singing her heart out. Tao’s voice twined with hers, and one by one, the rest of the pack joined in until their howls filled the night.

We’re wolves under our first moon and we’re here to stay.

-The End-

Thanks so much for reading First Moon! I hope you enjoyed it! The setting was inspired by family vacations in Northern Michigan, which is an amazing and beautiful area of the United States. While I changed the names of towns and local attractions, the dunes are real as is the dune cliff and mosquitoes really are the (unofficial) state bird of Michigan.

Were you sorry to see the story end? Want more?
Leo, Kai and the Sherriff all have stories to tell about living in their newly formed pack. Plus, I kind of want to see what happens when Tao finally spanks Audrey, don’t you? So keep an eye out for a short story with that scene. If you’d like to know when those come out,

About the Author

Michelle Fox lives in the Midwest with her husband, kids, the occasional exchange student and two, sweetly disobedient dogs. She loves fantasy and romance, which makes writing paranormal romance a natural fit. Most of her books have been top 100 bestsellers in their genre and she was once #1 in Germany. In her spare time, she's been known to shake her bon-bon at Zumba, make spectacular cheesecakes, hoard vintage costume jewelry and eat way too much ice cream (Ben and Jerry’s Karamel Sutra for the win!).
