I
don’t know where it comes from

But there is magic in our veins

We are Heston witches,

We are many,

We are one.

WELCOME TO SILVERLINE CITY

A reader’s guide to The Heston Witches

POPULATION: 45, 473 souls.

CURRENCY: Silver coins with profile of ruling Heston matriarch engraved on one side and two trees and a river on the other side. 1 silver coin has a value of about $1.25.

THE CITY: Silverline City is a fictional city that is located at the western border of the legendary Garden of Eden. The city was founded by the ancestors of the Heston Clan who are descended from Mother Eve herself. The River Pishon runs through the city and the end of the Heston estate which is said to be the border between Eden and the rest of the world though no one has ever found the entrance to the Garden. Two massive Eden trees stand on opposite sides of the river and the land around Silverline is blessed with silver ore and precious gemstones.

INDUSTRIES AND UTILITIES: Solar power station generates electricity for the city’s use. The river water is purified and supplied to the city by the water processing plant. There are four silver mines and two mines for precious stones. There is a jewellery manufacturing plant where the famous Heston earrings, bangles, brooches, chains and pendants are designed and created and then shipped to other nearby cities and around the world.

There’s a university, a technical college, a high school and a junior school. The Hestons also own and run a massive complex- The onyx plaza that houses a five star hotel, a gourmet restaurant, a day spa, and several boutiques and shops.

THE HESTON WITCHES: A family of powerful women said to have descended directly from Eve, the mother of all, herself. All females in the family are given names starting with the letter E in honour of their illustrious ancestor. Only the females in the family inherit the magical gifts the Hestons are known for. Each Heston witch is chosen for a particular gemstone when they attain their magical maturity at fifteen. They can draw power from their gemstones and each wears a ring with her particular stone mounted on it.

OTHER CREATURES IN SILVERLINE'S MAGICAL COMMUNITY:

SLAVARTS: Magical were creatures that have the ability to morph into foxes. They have a very short life span and develop to maturity at three months.

QUARTOS: Supernatural beings (male) that hold the form of horses during the day and change into human form at night. They can change form at will but it takes a lot of skill and only the very old among them have this talent.

PELENCHIES: Clan of women that live beside the River Pishon. They guard the river against intruders who would contaminate it and can transform into a single insect or a swarm of insects.

ENKOBIES: The Enkobies are natural shapeshifters who can chose several different forms at the same time and can change their form into that of any living being

THE ALIQYNE ORDER OF BLACK KNIGHTS: The Alichyne Order of Black Knights is a magical council of sorcerers descended from the fourth son of the Earth Mother and Father, Ramon. They have a ruling council of thirty sorcerers. Their council members get elected following a fight to the death using magical means once a council seat becomes vacant. They have a long standing vendetta against the Hestons and are trying to make their way back to the Garden of Eden which they claim is their rightful home.

THE BLAKEWELL CLAN OF WARLORDS: The Blakewell Clan originated from the male descendants of the Hestons and are sworn to protect them in battle. They are sworn to chastity and can only be released from their vows if a Heston witch agrees to leave Red Rock Haven to wed them and bare children with them. If they have male children, they can continue to live together but once a female child is born, the Heston witch must return with her to Red Rock Haven and the Blakewell must return to active duty along with all their male offspring.

THE MUSES DIVINE: The magical goddesses of inspiration, they visit at will and help to inspire the Hestons with their spell writing.

Preston Williams was a right ass and everyone but him knew it. He was worse than a mad dog and it was way past time that somebody put him down.

Crouched in the bushes outside his country home, Edna could feel the blend of chemicals coursing through her veins. Her heart was pounding, its rhythm a loud
thump, thump, thump
, hitting her eardrums in the early morning silence.  She wasn’t frightened though. On the contrary, she relished the simulation of the normal human adrenalin fuelled flight or fight response. She thought of a word that would best describe how she felt and settled on giddy. “I feel positively giddy,” she laughed softly. She hadn’t felt this spry, this vibrant, this
alive
since… well since she’d died actually.

She grimaced at this unwelcome reminder of her unnatural state.

Thanks to that ass Preston, she was no longer alive in the proper sense of the word. The arrogant bastard wasn’t used to being denied anything. Unfortunately her vocabulary seemed to shrink to miniscule proportions whenever she was around the smug little shit. Her usual responses were “No”, “Hell No”, “Oh No” and “Fuck No”. No matter what it was that he wanted, she simply hadn’t been interested. He’d kept pestering and she’d known he’d send his goons after her soon enough so she’d taken adequate precautions.

She’d cast the spell herself and had gone over everything twice, leaving no room for error. It worked like a charm. A few hours after she had been very publicly shot in the head by that moron, Lester, who worked for Preston, she’d woken up with a mild headache and a faint taste of formalin in her mouth.
Perhaps she shouldn’t have baited him; perhaps she should have lain low.
She shrugged. There was no use second-guessing herself now. What was done was done. She wasn’t a zombie, she wasn’t the undead and she definitely wasn’t a ghost, she felt way too corporeal for that and no way was she an angel (
Duh! No wings!
). She was simply other.

Someone really should have warned the retard about the consequences of his actions. Karma was one mean bitch. And right now he had a shitload of payback coming his way. If he thought that things were settled now then he had another think coming. Preston Williams was a dead man walking, he just didn’t have enough sense to lie down and die. It would be a singular pleasure to teach him the finer points of etiquette when it came to being a corpse.

Edna smirked evilly to herself as she crept silently towards the big house that was lit up like a Times Square Christmas tree. In the back of her mind she noted vaguely that she cast no shadow in her new form but she didn’t care.  Anything was worth it just to see the look on his face when she confronted him.

She’d never been one to put much emphasis on signs and portends but right now she was about to put up a great big billboard. The message she had to put across to the world and the rest of the magical community was simple. YOU DID NOT MESS WITH A HESTON WITCH! Not if you had any modicum of sense or wanted a semblance of a life when you were done.

She ran her hands lightly down her sides, brushing off a layer of dirt that simply wasn’t there. Her pale green tunic was as pristine as it was when she’s put it on. She swished back her shoulder length brunette hair and knew that her pale blue eyes would be sparkling with malice and mischief. She struggled to hold back a manic grin as she gestured to the front door and it swung open welcomingly. She could hear alarms going off and she silenced them all with just a single thought. Making her way up the staircase she knew led to Preston’s bedroom she remarked to herself that the world had gotten it all wrong.

Life didn’t begin at forty, it began when you were dead.

The End…

or simply a new beginning
