‘
So you think it was the work of Providence, do you?' demanded Rupert, his tone unwontedly serious as he suddenly released her.

‘
Don't you?'

‘
If it was,' he declared with a frown, ‘I cannot express myself—if you will forgive me?—as being impressed with the workings of fate.'

‘
Rupert!'

But his eyes were teasing now and his lips twitched.

‘
Should I thank Providence, then, for sending me a naughty little minx to plague and tease and torment me for the rest of my life?'

Clare broke into giggles. ‘Ogre!' She shook a threatening fist. ‘You wait, Sir Rupert Wolverley. I am going to lead you
such
a dance.'

‘
Then,' said her husband softly, gathering her back into his arms, ‘I shall dance.'
