“I just want
to give it one more shot before I tell my parents about the plan,”
said Farrah as she followed like a puppy behind the Queen who had
strolled across the room.

“Okay, what
can I do for you then?” asked the Queen sceptically.

Farrah thought
it best to just come out and ask the Queen.

“My Queen,
tell me about the King’s curse.”

The Queen took
a seat next to Farrah at the end of the bed before she answered. As
always, she looked at Farrah with adoring eyes.

“I’m assuming
that you are talking about the Curse that will befall any fairy
that reveals his or her magic ability in the presence of a
human?”

“Yes, my
Queen, is it real?” asked a fretful Farrah as she swayed back and
forth at the edge of the bed.

“Oh yes, I’m
afraid it is very real, my dear. I tried to convince him to lift
the curse after the Cornuto attack, but he was so stubborn. He had
his own vision for Fairyland that...”

“That didn’t
include Ordinaria,” blurted out Farrah as she stood up from the
bed.

“I know
everything, my Queen.”

“Oh, you do –
I’m so sorry, Farrah,” replied the Queen, as she attempted to look
into Farrah eyes, but instead she reverted them to the golden,
full-length mirror that was propped against the side of the bedroom
wall.

“Farrah, this
is something that the King and I did not see eye to eye on.
Although my husband could be a brilliant man at times, he was
blind, for not seeing the worth of Ordinaria Fairies.”

Farrah stepped
towards the Queen, not wanting to hear anymore about the King’s
deceitful plan. Instead, she decided to redirect the conversation
back to that of the curse.

“So what
happens if a fairy is cursed?”

Caught a
little off guard, the Queen gave her head a shake to place her
thoughts back to the present before she took a seat back on the
bed.

“You no longer
have to worry about that, my young fairy. You see, when a fairy
dies, the curses and enchantments held by that fairy also die.”

Having heard
what she wanted, Farrah marched for the door when the Queen called
out to her.

“Farrah, you
can’t possibly think that using your magic would allow you to
convince enough human boys and girls to make the journey to
Fairyland? Humans have become far too cynical. Even with magic, it
is a hopeless endeavour.”

Farrah stopped
and turned to face the Queen.

“I’ve been
underestimated my whole life. That is of no matter now. As you
said, my Queen, I’m Fairyland’s last hope. I’ll be successful, or
I’ll die trying.”

Just as the
Queen was about to caution the fairy one final time, Farrah spun
her body back around and exited the Queen’s chamber.

Chapter 45
: The Weight of the Land

Farrah had no
idea where to start her new mission of convincing human children
about Fairyland. Bella was also getting impatient, finding it more
and more difficult to navigate in the storm that attacked Fairyland
relentlessly that morning. When she spotted the Great Wall of China
below, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Bella
swooped down for a landing.

“Good idea,
girl. We’ll go back to visit Keilani. If there is one person down
on earth that could believe in Fairyland – it would be
Keilani!”

Farrah
stood in the grass in the backyard and looked up at Keilani’s
bedroom window. She felt nervous, much as she felt on her first
mission. After marking the X on the side of the wall, she was
instantly transported to Keilani’s closet. As Farrah pushed the
closet door open, trying not to make a sound, she was startled to
discover that Keilani was not sleeping. Instead, she was reading a
book in bed. Upon seeing the closet door open, she dropped the book
to the floor. Keilani’s scared expression turned to one of
agitation when she saw that it was Farrah. Convinced that she would
never see Farrah again, she could only conclude it was her mother
playing a prank.

妈妈,你们在这做什么,在我的壁橱里?
Keilani said, sounding more than just a little upset for
being interrupted.

Forgetting,
Farrah quickly sprinkled some Molar Dust into her mouth and into
her ears. Thankfully, Keilani repeated what she was asking.

“Mom, what are
you doing in my closet?”

“Oh, Keilani,
I am not your mother. I am Farrah, and I come from Fairyland,” the
fairy said calmly as she approached the bed.

“Oh, come on,
Mom, we have gone through this before. You can’t fool me! Plus,
none of my teeth have fallen out this time,” Keilani continued,
sounding even more agitated as she crossed her arms.

“Keilani, I
know that this is hard for you to comprehend, but I’m really not
your mother. I am a Tooth Fairy and I’ve come a very long way to
talk to you.”

Farrah could
see by her soured expression that Keilani was still unconvinced, so
she continued her plea.

“Well,
Keilani, is your mom able to do this?”

With her hand
already dug deep into the Molar Dust, she whispered the word
Animale and flung it over her head. While Keilani kept her eye on
the dust that was absorbed by the ceiling, Farrah crossed her
fingers behind her back. She hoped that it wasn’t another Honker
Mosquito that would soon rush into the room. She got her answer
about a minute later.

Although
Farrah had intended to summon a Mannagio, a regular, four-legged
puppy appeared in Keilani’s room. Although Farrah was visibly upset
with herself, it was of no matter to Keilani, who had picked up the
chocolate lab and stroked the back of its neck.

“Oh, I love
him. He is just the cutest puppy I have ever seen.”

Farrah hoped
that despite the blunder, Keilani would now realize that she was
indeed a Tooth Fairy. Taking a seat beside Keilani on the bed,
Farrah watched as she held the puppy playfully over her head.
Keilani was making faces and giggling, which went on for a few more
minutes until Keilani sat back up and looked at Farrah with the
puppy in her lap.

“Thank-you so
much, Mom. I’ve always wanted a puppy!”

Now getting
agitated, Farrah stood up in front of Keilani and snatched the
puppy from her arms to get her attention. Farrah carefully placed
the puppy on a chair at the foot of the girl’s bed and returned to
her seat on the bed. Farrah sighed deeply as she spoke.

“Okay,
Keilani, what will it take to convince you that I am a real Tooth
Fairy?”

Keilani looked
over Farrah from head to foot a few times before she spoke.

Well,
if you
are
a real Tooth
Fairy, you should be able to fly out my window,” said Keilani
mockingly and without hesitation.

Those were the
words that Farrah was dreading. She was confident that she would be
able to perform almost any magic trick asked of her, flying on the
other hand, was still impossible because of the size of her wings.
Nevertheless, Farrah was drawn to the only window in Keilani’s
room.

Although her
brain was telling her no, her body seemed to be moving
automatically. She got up from the bed and walked up to the window.
When she lifted the window open, the breeze from outside rushed
onto her face as she stared at the backyard. She could see Bella
down bellow, staring up at her with worried eyes.

Farrah
scrutinized the surroundings below, looking over every object that
was potentially dangerous. There was a large pointy fountain made
of stone. Farrah pictured her body plunging toward it at an
incredible speed. Also a chain-linked fence lined the backyards of
all the homes on Keilani’s street. Having second thoughts, Farrah
turned to look at Keilani.

“Well, what
are you waiting for?” Keilani criticized, making Farrah feel like a
coward.

Farrah was
stuck. If she didn’t go through with it, there would be no chance
of convincing Keilani that she was a Tooth Fairy. If she did, she
would certainly hurt herself, or even worse, plunge to her death.
Keilani continued to shout impatiently in the background when
Farrah went for it. She dove out the window, much like an Olympic
diver, lunging for the water.

The moment
that Farrah hit the night air, she knew that she had made a big
mistake. Her body fell like a stone downward. The air rushed fast
around her body, blurring the images below. In a panic, Bella
attempted to position herself under Farrah, hoping to soften her
fall. For Farrah, everything seemed to go in slow motion. She could
see Keilani hanging out the window, looking on nervously.

Flashes of
childhood memories began to run through Farrah’s head. Like the
time she and Giuseppi went fishing together. She remembered how
pleased he was when he caught a ten foot Oxoton Bull Fish. This of
course turned out to be a disaster when the portly fish nearly bit
Farrah’s ear clean off when she attempted to pull it into the
boat.

Then without
warning, everything went black in Farrah’s head. She could now feel
the coolness of the night as she came within a few feet of the
ground. Suddenly, a humming sound came from her pocket. Although
Farrah was unable to see what was happening, she sensed that it was
the star. It was humming and even in her pocket, Farrah noticed
that it was glowing.

Seconds later,
it was as if her clothing had become filled with helium. The
falling stopped abruptly and instead, Farrah began to float
upwards. Weightless, Farrah picked up the pace as she glided back
up to the window. She was once again face to face with Keilani,
whose expression was now one of shock. Farrah gave a smile before
she jetted like a bullet straight up into the air wanting to test
out her newfound ability a little further.

Picking up
speed, Farrah criss-crossed and twirled around wildly around the
backyard. She spotted Bella bellow and rushed down toward her,
pulling up just before they collided.

“Bella! I can
fly!”

Farrah began
to circle Keilani’s home over and over again, which caused her head
to get dizzy. Having far too much fun, however, she flew a few more
laps around Keilani’s backyard before she swooped back through the
window. Not knowing how to stop, she nearly knocked over the
onlooking Keilani before she smacked head first into the dresser at
the foot of Keilani’s bed.

Keilani’s
stunned expression was reminiscent of the statues back in Rome.
With the room spinning, a light-headed Farrah plopped herself down
on Keilani’s bed to catch her breath. Shaking away her nervousness,
Keilani joined her on the bed.

“Oh, my gosh.
You really are a Tooth Fairy!”

“I told you!”
reacted Farrah as she sat up and grasped Keilani’s hands as she sat
cross-legged on the bed.

“So you really
are from Fairyland,” said a cautious Keilani, now looking at her as
if she were an alien form another planet.

“That’s right
– and guess what, I want you to come back with me,” said an excited
Farrah, still feeling the adrenalin running through her body.

Keilani stood
up and backed away, feeling frightened by the idea of leaving her
safe and cozy room.

“I – I- I –
don’t know Farrah,” she said in a stuttered voice.

Farrah stood
up and was about to walk towards Keilani. Sensing that this was
making her uncomfortable, she decided instead to take a seat on the
chair next to her bed. She stroked the puppy one last time and with
the snap of her finger, the puppy vanished. Keilani rocked
nervously on the edge of her bed as Farrah looked on.

“Keilani, you
don’t understand what an opportunity this is. Fairyland is the most
incredible place on the face of the universe.”

Farrah walked
back to the window and gazed off in the distance where fires
continued to burn through the night.

“Look at what
your world has been reduced to. You can’t even go outside for fear
of an attack. Who knows what shape the earth will be in five years.
I promise you that Fairyland will make you forget all about this
hell that has become of earth.”

Although
Keilani was beginning to feel intrigued, she couldn’t shake the
petrified feeling. Farrah continued, trying to sound as convincing
as possible, much like a political candidate the day before an
election.

“My sweet
girl, don’t you want to become a fairy, with powers like me?”

Upon hearing
those words, Keilani’s eyes lit up.

“You mean, I
can perform magic like you?”

“Well, I guess
you humans would call it magic. Keilani you have to trust me. This
is the biggest opportunity that you will ever be presented with. I
promise I would never do anything to hurt you. I would have never
come down to earth to visit you if I thought I would be endangering
you in any way. In fact, it is just the opposite. What I am
offering you is a new and exciting life,” said Farrah, placing a
hand on Keilani’s cheek, much like she did when she wanted to
convince Giuseppi of something.

Keilani began
to visualize what it would mean to live on Fairyland. She pictured
herself flying in the sky like a bird soaring over the ocean. She
pictured herself using Pixie Dust to accumulate gold and diamonds.
She also pictured a magnificent castle to live in with all of her
family, when it occurred to her to ask Farrah about what would
happen to her family.

“Can my family
come along?” Keilani asked.

“Not right
now, but I promise, we will return and try to convince them to join
you in Fairyland.”

“What if they
don’t believe?”

Farrah
continued to look Keilani directly in the eyes.

“Trust me,
I’ll convince them,” said Farrah with a wink.

Although
Keilani was beginning to feel like she wanted to go to Fairyland,
the prudent side of her brain, was telling her that she shouldn’t
rush into the decision.
