“I think you may be right.” She walks up to the large window.

Fireworks fill the night sky for the next few minutes. It amazes me how much I missed them. I can remember the last time I saw them like it was only yesterday. I took my son to the riverfront to watch them up close. Sure, you can enjoy the show from far way. But nothing beats being up close.

The view.

The feel.

You can’t match it.

They shoot off the finale and give the smoke a chance to clear. From up here I can hear the crowds below clapping and cheering. This is a new beginning. Years down the road, this will be the day humanity remembers. This is the day when we decided to fight.

The noise from the crowds starts to lower, but I can still make it out. Nothing short of the explosion will calm them down. Even then, I think the city is going to be loud tonight.

The seconds pass by before we finally hear the siren. This was the signal to tell the people it was time. The crowds outside start a countdown that gets echoed by the people in the room.

Ten. Spotlights shine from the nearby buildings onto the convention center.

Nine. Sara takes my hand and holds it tight.

Eight. Zeke puts his hand on my shoulder and nods in approval.

Seven. The people in the building start to raise their drinks.

Six. A rogue bottle rocket explodes across the street.

Five. A light flashes in the distance, north of the building.

Four. Zeke looks over at me confused.

Three. I see the reflection in the window of a couple making out just behind us.

Two. Some of the cheering is being replaced by what sounds like screams.

One. Are those gunshots?

The first explosion rings out from the center. We can see the distinct flash from the upper floor. The other floors go in sequence shortly after. A large cloud of dust and smoke fills the air around us as the cheering goes loud.

About thirty seconds later the cheers turn into screams as another explosion goes off. The light from the blast coming from the east of where we are.

Four more explosions follow shortly after. The cheers are gone. All I can hear is the screams and panic from the streets below.

The panic fills the room as many of the people start to rush the stairs to escape. Our moment of triumph turning into one of terror.

Whoever is responsible for this will pay with their life.

I will see to it personally.

The Most Important Thing You Can Do To Spread the Word

Thank you for reading my book.

You’ve already rocketed to the top of my
Favorite People In The World List
, currently populated by Brandon Sanderson, George R.R. Martin, the late Robert Jordan, J.A. Konrath, and Robert Kirkman amongst others.

But there’s one more thing we depreciate if you have a few minutes…

If you enjoyed this story, or even if you kind of liked it, please
LEAVE A REVIEW TODAY
.

WHY REVIEWS MATTER

I hate begging you like an NPR pledge drive, but I’m a new writer, still making my name. In today’s publishing world, with so many great writers out there trying to get noticed, reviews are one of the primary ways writers free themselves from obscurity.

I would write no matter what, even if my wife and kids were my only readers.

I’m a writer. I have stories to tell, and want to tell them to you forever.

My books are what I do when I get up to go to work each day. The better my books do, the better I do. The more I can write, the more ambitious I can be.

Will You Be a Part of My 1%?

About 1% of people who read a book review it.

Some people don’t like reading reviews.

Some people don’t realize how much a matters to a modern author.

Some people have never left review and have no idea what to say.

Some people never even consider it.

Most people don’t have time.

If you can’t leave a review for whatever reason, or even if you don’t want to, I totally understand. I am thrilled you’re reading, and appreciate the time you spend my worlds.

But if you do, please know that you’re part of the 1% who really drive me to get noticed.

The biggest challenge for indie authors is finding an audience. Word-of-mouth and reviews on Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Sony, Goodreads, and similar sites can make all the difference in the world between whether a new reader will find and buy my books.

If you have a few minutes, you’ll make a
huge difference
in how my story as an indie writer continues to unfold. It doesn’t have to be long, just honest. Three sentences saying why you like the book will read like pages of thank-you to me.

Thank you again for reading my book. I spent countless hours writing and editing my book to make it the best I could. I then sent the book to an editor in order to catch the things that I may have missed.

No matter how much time we spent making sure things were perfect, no doubt some errors have made it through. If you happen to catch any, feel free to email me at [email protected] so I can get it fixed ASAP.

Thank you for helping me make the books better for those who read it after you.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

I can remember the first fantasy book I read as a kid. It was Dragons of Autumn Twilight and the rest of the Dragonlance Chronicles. Raistlin, Tas, Tanis, and the rest of the cast had me putting my name on the list to borrow the book at least once a year at my school library. From the first read I fell in love.

From there my love of fantasy turned into a love of gaming. Dungeons and Dragons, Rift, and Shadowrun firmly had my attention throughout my teenage years. There was hardly a week… a day when my friends and I didn’t sit down to play something. Even when we weren’t playing, we had a blast just creating characters or talking about the settings.

Eventually, I taught myself how to be a dungeon master of the games. This allowed me to come up with scenarios and stories for my friends to play through. I didn’t need any preparation beforehand, everything I needed came from my head.

I don’t play the games like I used to, but I’m a much more avid reader than I’ve ever been. I’m thankful for my Kindle Unlimited subscription that allows me to keep something on the fly, even when things have been tight. Some of my favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, George R.R. Martin, the late Robert Jordan amongst others.

I would like to say that I was one of those people who loved to write from a young age, but I can’t. I didn’t believe that I had what it took to tell a good story, even though my time as a teenager said otherwise. It wasn’t until I explained an idea for a story to my wife that I grew the courage to even try.

Demontouched was not the story I told my wife, but another one that begged to be told. It was through the struggles of Mitch that I started to fall in love with writing. I don’t look forward to ending his story, but will be thankful he gave me a chance to tell it.

I have tons of stories swimming in my head right now, I only hope I get to live long enough to tell them all.

Thank you for giving me, and other indie authors like me, a shot.
