CHAPTER
one

T
rina Rivers knows first-hand how tough life can be in a pack of
were
wolves. Being one of only a handful of young females in the large pack Clan Catan really sucked and
was
certainly not a life she would have chosen for herself. Residing in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains meant
she had the
freedom to run the forests in
her
wolf form
. But this
independence also came
with many restrictions.
From a young age they are all taught that wolves must abide by the rules of the packs and laws of the clans which have been passed down through the generations. The problem Trina found with this was
that
the rules were not fair and the women of the packs were made to suffer the injustices. The larger, dominating, more powerful males were the ones who made the rules
,
ben
ding
them as they saw fit.

On her seventh birthday, Trina’s parents were killed in a tragic car accident.
Because of politics between packs, she was forced to
live with her dad’s brother
,
Sam
,
and his wife
,
Paula. She had never met th
is part of the family
before finding herself standing at their d
oorstep with tears in her eyes.

From the beginning Trina felt unwanted and in the way. Aunt Paula went out of her way to make it clear she did not want her there and did not consider her a part of the family. In fact, they grudgingly took her in only because the council had ordered it. Even her three cousins resented her living with them
,
so she did her best to stay out of everyone’s way. Which wasn’t too hard since they ignor
ed her most of the time anyway.

Sam made sure she got to school during her elementary and middle school years. Once her cousin Joanna was old enough to drive, the responsibility fell on her to get the younger ones to school.
H
igh school
was
when Trina started having problems
.
Joanna took her friends to school
but
had no room to take her. Being forced to walk, she was
constantly
late. When the tardy notices began piling up, Trina found it was easier to skip the first class. This turned into skipping other classes, and then days all together. Hanging out in the woods with her friends was so much easier. No one notice what was going on with her
;
half
of
the time she didn’t even bother going home.

She felt suffocated in the pack, her life going nowhere and fast. Trina anxiously waited for her sixteenth birthday to make her first shift. Once this happened, she planned to leave Oregon and go to California
,
make
a new life for herself.

All the other girls talked about making their first change
;
h
ow their mother
s
were
supposed to take them away from the pack so they could make their change in a controlled environment. She didn’t know anyone to talk to other than her aunt.
“Aunt Paula, I’m turning sixteen in a couple months. D
o you have time to talk to me?”

Paula was s
itting on the couch,
a cigarette in one hand
and
a
glass of
rum and coke in the other
.
Her
feet
were
propped up on top of the coffee table laden with magazines, wrappers and who knows what else scattered about. Her once blonde hair was bleached and hung in a stringy mass down to her shoulders. At hearing Trina’s voice she cut her bloodshot blue eyes up at her and snarled
,
“I don’t know why I’m forced to put up with you! You should have been in that car with your parents!” Turning back to the television, Paula picked up the remote and hit the arrow up on the
volume, rattling the speakers.

Trina
knew the moment the words were out of her mouth she had made a mistake
.
Her being there was a mistake and she shook in fury.
Standing barely five feet three, she was smaller than even her youngest cousin
,
who had just turned twelve. She had the trademark blonde hair and blue eyes from her dad. That is where the resemblance to the family ended. Where her father, uncle
,
and cousins were
all
big boned and husky, she was slender with softer features, like her mother.

The memory of that first day flooded her mind
. H
er Uncle Sam had stroked her cheek
and
smiled
. Looking down at her tenderly, he had t
ears in his eyes
,
“So beautiful, you look just like your mother.”
.
The, she r
emember
ed
how Paula had grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into the bedroom, shoving her
hatefully
through the door.

Trina had a picture of her mother and father she kept hidden under her pillow. She would pull it out and stare at it on the long
,
lonely nights in her younger years. The older she got, the more and m
ore she looked like her mother.

Putting it all together, Trina realized Sam had become more distan
t
because of this. He hardly ever talked to her. She would catch him looking at her and quickly avert his eyes
, b
ut not before she saw them mist with tears. A
d
d
ed to this was
the horrific fight Paula and Sam had the first night she had come to live with them, a
long with
many arguments since. Paula raging on and on about her mother not choosing him, it all made sense now. She knew why the woman was such a bitch to her. Seeing her every day reminded Paula that her husband was in love with
another woman, Trina’s mother.

Over the years, Sam began to work longer hours, sometimes staying in town rather than coming home. His excuse
was that
he had to make a living for the family and try to fit into the world of humans. Paula sat home, drinking and popping her downers. Yelling at Trina to clean up the kitchen, do the laundry, or some mundane chore she could have already done if she had gotten off the couch.
She had turned into their live in maid.

Standing with her hands clenched
at her sides
, she stared at the back of Paula’s head. She truly hated the woman and wanted to pick something up and slug her with it. Instead
,
she ran out the door and
into the woods.

From then on, Trina did her best to avoid going to what she
had never
consider
ed
her home. Hanging out with her friends
had
got
ten
her through most days.
In doing so she met Dean
,
who made her world easier to tolerate. He spent hours on end just
talking to her
,
m
aking her laugh and silencing her fears on what to expect when she made her shift. She looked forward to seeing him and was elated when he invited her to come out into the woods the night after the full moon and see his wolf. Of course he didn’t allow her to see him
make the actual
shift because that was something a werewolf preferred to
do in solitude.

Spending time with him in the woods allowed her to see how he hunted. Even though he was from the neighboring pack, she felt safe around his wolf because he was in control. She trusted him completely and looked up to him. In her fifteen year old mind, he was mature. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw him. She felt all giddy inside because a twenty year old man treated her special, like she mattered. Trina was head over heels in love.

The full moon fell a week after her sixteenth birthday. Running excitedly out into the forest, Trina met Dean where he
’d
said
he would
meet her
.

“It’ll be easier if you’re completely naked
,

h
e
began
unbuttoning his pants
.

“I am not undressing in front of you!” Trina
’s voice raised an octave at the thought of him looking at her.

Stripping in front of her wasn’t an issue for him.
His clothed landed on the ground in a heap from where he tossed them. With hands on hips, he stood staring
at her with a grin on his face.

Trina frowned and turned away. Pausing briefly, she felt the nudging inside her mind. Her wolf was ready to be released.
Her bra and panties
would show
no more than what he would see if she were wearing a bikini. Looking over her shoulder,
her
eyes were drawn downward
and she quickly turned back around
.  Lifting her shirt up and over her head, she slipped her shorts off, tossing them onto the ground beside his jeans and t-shirt.
She knew that w
erewolves were naturally sexual creatures
, but having never been with anyone
,
she was a little apprehensive when feelings of desire began to stir inside. It was apparent he was feeling them too
.
W
ith her back to him, she grinned
.

Making sure she had a frown plastered on her face
,
she spun around, her arms crossed over her chest
, her chin indicating his excitement
.
“I am not having sex with you.”

“Sorry
,
Rin.” His hands lifted and he shrugged with a slight grin on his face. “You know I love you and you excite me
, b
ut I d
on’t expect anything from you.”

“Okay, but I’m still not getting completely un
dressed.” Her tone was adamant.

He nodded, his grin growing into a smile. “Just so you know
,
when you shift you’ll rip through your bra and panties, you won’t have them when you change back.”

“You said we never shift around others
,
so we should go to our own secluded place, right?” Looking into his eyes, concern for what would soon be taking place caused her brows to meet.

“Well, you want me here with you
,
don’t you?”

“Yeah, but can’t I take them off
at the last minute
?” She
asked, refusing
to
see
the evidence of his
growing
excitement
, looking anywhere but at him.

Dean noticed her avoidance and laughed. “Yeah
,
you can do tha
t.”

Chewing on her bottom lip, she looked up, peering through the tall pine trees into the
night sky. “Okay, so what now?”

“We wait. Your wolf will know when it’s time.” Dean grabbed his shirt, spreading it out
. He sat down on top of it
, leaning
his back against the tree.
“You might want to sit or you’ll fall
when the first pain hits you.”

Nervously, she sat down beside him. The dry autumn leaves crackled and poked her butt through th
e thin material of her panties.

When he noticed her glance at her clothing,
Dean held
her shirt up to her.

Snagging it, she grinned
. Quickly, she
got to her knees and spread it out like he had his
,
and
then
settled back down. When she looked at Dean he was staring at her breast
s
. Sucking in a breath and releasing it on a sigh
,
she hid the grin with a shake of her head.

Dean chuck
led and put his arm around her.

Trina leaned her head on his shoulder
.

Peering out into the woods they waited for her shift to begin. It didn’t take long. The moon was high in the sky, pe
e
king through the trees
,
when the pain slammed her rigidly against the tree
. Like D
ean had warned, she did not have time to remove her
bra and panties.
