Nicki came back home that evening feeling relieved and
happy. Jonas and she had worked together well, without any friction, all day.
Now all she needed was to talk to Mark and she would feel better.
She did need to know where he stood. They could experience so much more if he
could be open to it.
Jonas had gone out to meet an old friend. Nicki knew he’d
done that to give her and Mark privacy, too. She appreciated it.
Mark was still at home, to her surprise.
“Mark, you’re home early!”
Mark grinned at her, looking relaxed.
“Worked from home. I was too bloody tired to make it in
today.”
“I’m glad. You look better.”
They talked about work, and how they should eat something
adult for dinner instead of junk food, but Nicki could feel the tension build.
They were both avoiding the topic.
Finally, as she was taking a deep breath and getting ready
to launch right into it, Mark said it.
“Nicki… Last night was amazing.”
The breath came out in a whoosh of relief.
“It was?”
“Of course it was. You remember that night at the
restaurant?”
Nicki grinned.
“Couldn’t possibly forget, could I?”
“Well, that was just as amazing. I think… If you’re up for
it, I’d like to do it again.”
Nicki’s grin widened.
“Do you have any preference for who might be watching this
time? We can’t find convenient strangers every time.”
She knew exactly what he was suggesting. Mark did, too.
She could see it.
“You’re a sly vixen, aren’t you? You want Jonas to watch.”
Nicki shrugged and cuddled up to him on the couch.
“Well, he’s already heard us, loud and clear. We both
meant for him to. So what’s the big deal now? We both know that we like it. We
might as well do what we like. Why not? We’re not hurting anybody.”
Mark was silent for a minute.
“Nicki, I’ve always known that your boundaries are quite
flexible.”
Nicki shifted, feeling a bit guilty.
“Yes, but Mark, I wouldn’t do anything you’re not
comfortable with.”
The memory of what she and Jonas had shared rose in her
mind. Nicki firmly shoved it away.
There was no point bringing it up and talking about it. It
would never happen again. She and Jonas had talked about it, and she knew that
they would never do it again. Telling Mark about it now would only serve to
assuage her guilt. It would hurt him, so that she could feel better about being
an honest person. That was just plain selfish, to Nicki’s mind.
“I know that, Nicki. I trust you.”
The guilt got a little pricklier. Nicki shoved it away
more forcefully.
“I love you, Mark. You know I love you.”
Mark kissed her forehead and held her.
“I know. I love you, too. And… I want you to be happy. I
think… I might, if you want, like to be the one watching, too.”
Nicki held her breath for a long moment. Was he saying
what she thought he was saying? Could he possibly have been suggesting…
“What exactly do you mean, Mark?”
Nicki really didn’t want to put her foot in it if she’d
got it wrong. If he hadn’t meant what she thought he did.
“I mean… I’ve thought about it. I thought about it last
night. I thought about watching you kiss another man, be touched by another
man. I don’t know how I’d feel if it really happened. But I liked thinking
about it. I think I want to find out if I’d like it. If you want to.”
Nicki let out a long, slow breath.
“Have you got anybody in mind, then?”
Mark grinned.
“Well… Jonas did occur to me. You’re both very comfortable
with each other. You trust him and I like him. And I’m pretty sure he’s into
you.”
Nicki could hardly believe her ears.
Mark had just suggested the first part of her fantasy.
With the right moves, she might even be able to make all
of her fantasies come true.
Nicki could hardly believe her luck. Now she needed to
find out if Mark was attracted to Jonas, too.
She needed a plan. For that, she needed Jonas.

“James, I can’t do any more today. I can’t. I’m not
kidding.”
Nicki’s longsuffering boss was tugging at his poor,
beleaguered hair again.
Jonas stood by and watched, fascinated. The dynamics
between Nicki and James was a source of endless amusement to him.
Nicki said no to James, no matter what he asked, almost as
if it was a point of principle. James knew she would say no to everything and
came to her looking like a puppy, who’d been beaten down.
But he kept coming back to her for every little thing
instead of just sending her an email, telling her to get whatever it was done.
It was almost as if James enjoyed it.
Nicki treated James with amused forbearance. She did
things her own way, and he knew it. She also knew that she was demanded by
clients so often that her job was perfectly safe, despite her idiosyncrasies.
“Nicki, it’s just six. It’s just one modification.”
“It’s not like it’s going to go for zoning approval or
anything today. It’ll just have to wait, James. I am going home now.”
Despair clearly written all over his face, James turned to
Jonas.
“Jonas, talk to her!”
Jonas bit back a grin.
“I can do it, if you like.”
Nicki shot him an annoyed look.
“Don’t tempt me to unionize, James!”
He sighed.
Nicki relented, as Jonas had known she would.
“I’ll do it by ten tomorrow morning. You have to admit
that that’s soon enough, James. There’s no earthly reason why it would have to
be done before that.”
James sighed and agreed. As he walked off, Jonas took a
peek at his crown. Yes, he definitely had been losing hair.
“Nicks, that poor guy is going to take his hair transplant
procedure out of your pay.”
Nicki chuckled.
“That’s fine, honestly. I make him pull his hair out.”
“Why do you give him such a tough time? It would only take
you about twenty minutes to do it.”
Nicki shrugged.
“I work to pay the bills, Jonas. I don’t really work out
of any vaulting ambition. I’m good at what I do and I like it, but not enough
to spend more time than I’m paid for doing it. It’s not like I want to make
partner or anything. After a point, to rise in a firm, you need to go out and
start getting clients for them. I have no intention of doing that. So I’ve
already got a limit to how much I can grow here. Why would I put in more than I
should, knowing that?”
Jonas grinned.
“You always did have an odd way of looking at things. I’m
sure you’ve got them plenty of clients through referrals.”
She shrugged noncommittally.
“A few, I suppose. But that will never be my focus. I
don’t ever want my job description to include that. If I do it, it’s a pleasant
extra for them. I don’t want it to be a requirement. Besides, you’ve only seen
James working with me. If you give him an inch, trust me, he’ll take a mile.
You remember Linda?”
Jonas peered at her with furrowed brow.
“The really nervous looking girl in accounting?”
“Yeah, that’s the one. Know why she looks so nervous?”
“You can’t possibly mean it’s because of James.”
“Got it in one. Seriously, he started out asking her to do
a lot of these ‘twenty minute’ jobs. Oh, get your mind out of the gutter,”
added Nicki as Jonas leered.
“Fine, go on.”
“Right, well, they led to one hour-jobs and more, until
she was taking work home every night. That girl has a serious problem with saying
no. I finally told her to stand her ground and tell him she couldn’t do it.
Well, it didn’t go so well. I think that confrontation is why she looks so
nervous.”
“So… She’s nervous, as much thanks to you as James.”
“I was trying to help her. If she sucked so much at
confrontations, she should’ve told me.”
“When you were browbeating her? That would count as a
confrontation. Never mind, if he does push too much, I can understand why you
don’t want to give him any room to do it.”
Nicki grinned at him. She loved how their level of comfort
hadn’t changed, not one bit. They were a bit more careful about touching each
other – there was a new awareness there, and there was no point denying it –
but they were still perfectly at ease with each other.
They were still friends.
“So, that’s valuable information for you. It will come in
handy when you decide to work here permanently.”
Jonas chuckled.
“You’ve made up my mind for me, have you?”
Nicki looked up at him, hopeful as they walked to the
elevator.
“Well, why wouldn’t you? You enjoy being in Manhattan. You
like the work here. You don’t like San Francisco all that much. I’m here. Mark
is here. Your sister is in Upper East. I think it all fits.”
Jonas tweaked her nose affectionately as they got into the
elevator.
“I’m still thinking about it, you little pipsqueak. Don’t
push me now. I’ll make my decision when I’m ready to make it.”
Nicki had to settle for that.
“Is Mark home?” Jonas changed the subject.
Nicki fished out her phone to check.
“Probably not. They’ve got him working late every day, or
so it seems. I’ve barely seen him properly in about three days. I… Oh well,
what do you know? He’s home. He’s cooking! You’re going to have to deal with
adult dinner, Jonas. He won’t be making any junk food. Good thing, too. I think
you sold your soul to the devil for your metabolism. I wish you’d tell me how.
I’d do it, too.”
“I’m just lucky.”
“Lucky! You had two slices of cheesecake for lunch. That’s
not lucky, that’s sinful. Pact with the devil, I say. What did you sacrifice
for it? Did you bathe in the blood of virgins?”
Jonas shook his head bemusedly.
“What a morbid imagination you have. I have no idea what
Mark sees in you. You are a horrible person.”
Nicki waited.
“It was in tears of virgins, not blood. It’s impossible to
get blood out of towels.”
Chuckling, they walked to the subway – Jonas’s preference,
to feel like a real New Yorker – and went home.
Two days later, Nicki was beginning to wonder if she had
dreamed the conversation she’d had with Mark. He had said that he wanted to try
all kinds of kinky things that she had been looking forward to with a
vengeance.
Now he seemed to have forgotten all about it.
True, he had so much work that they barely saw each other.
When they did, Mark didn’t even have the energy to get it up, forget doing
anything with it.
Nicki understood and sympathized, of course. She had the
freedom to say no to her boss, because she had chosen a field where she
excelled remarkably. Mark was very good at his job, but far more insecure about
younger, brilliant coders who always appeared at his elbow.
Still, he was there now. Jonas would be home in a couple
of hours. She loved the guy, but it was nice to have some time with Mark,
finally.
Salads and garlic bread ready – a healthy meal, for almost
the first time that week – she went to the living room, where they were going
to have a Marvel marathon. She knew that Mark would fall asleep soon. She
couldn’t blame him for it. He was incredibly tired.
Even if she was edgy and horny.
Smiling, she settled down next to him.
“Nice to eat like an adult,” said Mark.
Nicki chuckled.
“It’s nice to have you home. You’ve been working much too
hard lately,” said Nicki, finally.
Mark’s arm was around her.
“I know. I’m sorry, Nicks. It’s just been crazy at work.”
She nodded and rested her head against his chest.
But now she couldn’t stop thinking about their earlier
conversation. Surely they weren’t going to just leave it at that! She had to
say something.
“Mark… We need to talk.”
Mark sighed softly.
“I know. I… Well, I guess I haven’t been completely honest
with you.”
Her heart thumping, she looked up at him.
“If you’ve changed your mind, it’s fine. I’m fine with
that. Nothing you’re not comfortable with will happen.”
Mark smiled gently and brushed a strand of hair away from
her face, tucking it behind her ear.
“I haven’t changed my mind. I’m not up to much right now,
but… Well, I know I haven’t been up for much lately. But I meant what I said.
That’s not what I was talking about. Well, not just that.”
Nicki waited, wondering. Hoping.
“Nicki, I never told you about this because I thought it
was just a thing. In college, I once had a crush on this person.”
Nicki waited. There was nothing remarkable about that.
“A guy.”
Her eyes widened.
“Mark… You’re attracted to men?”
He looked like he was relieved to get it out, and couldn’t
stop now that he’d started.
“I haven’t been attracted to men, not like that, not
regularly. But I had a crush on this guy. He was gay, I knew that. He was
interested in me, too. We were at this frat party and he was hitting on me. I
wanted to say yes and go back with him. I didn’t, but I wanted to. He
transferred after a couple of weeks and I never saw him again, so it was easy
to forget about it. Pretend it never happened, even. But…”
Nicki felt like she was holding her breath, and the world
was holding it with her.
“Mark… Are you telling me that you’re attracted to Jonas?
Or that you might be?”
Mark shrugged.
“I don’t know, really. I’ve just been wondering and
remembering since that day in the rest room. It reminded me of this, for some
reason. Well, it’s obvious why. I find… I find myself regretting that I never
experienced that. I’m not saying that I want it. But I wish I’d let myself do
what I wanted then. That’s all.”
Without a word, Nicki wrapped her arms around Mark and
held him.
“Mark… I’m glad you told me. But this changes nothing. We
will never do anything you’re not comfortable with. At any time you want, you
can stop everything. It’s as simple as that. I promise.”
Being held by Nicki like that, he could make himself
believe it. It was as simple as that.
Mark had always felt accepted, safe and loved with Nicki.
That would never change, he realized, and that warmth lulled him to sleep.
Soon, Nicki felt his breathing even and steady, and she realized that he’d
fallen asleep.
With a sigh, she got up and threw a soft blanket over him,
and curled up next to him.
Her boyfriend was one exhausted man. But it would be the weekend
soon. Everything would change, then. They would all have what they wanted.
