They sat down and Marcus began by telling them about his history with Brian Roads and how eighty years ago, he and Brian fought for the position of alpha of the York pack. Because of the way Brian acted upon losing the challenge, telling Marcus it was only a matter of time before the pack was his, Marcus banished him from the pack. Normally the loser would have taken the beta position, but Brian was untrustworthy and Marcus believed he would hinder, rather than benefit the pack. Two days later the remains of Marcus’s mate and six month old son Riley, were found. Marcus believed this was Brian’s doing, but the council said there was no proof. There was no other scents on the remains, so there was nothing to connect Brian to the crime. He couldn’t by law, do anything, so he began to pick up the pieces of his life and run his pack, even though all he really wanted was to join his family in death.

Then twenty-six years ago he met Rose Brody. He went out with her a couple of times, he knew she wasn’t his mate, but he cared about her. He was called away on pack business. A dispute between two packs vying for the same land to expand. In these circumstances the council would send in impartial alphas to gather information and help the council decide who gained the land. The dispute was between Brian Roads’ St James pack and the Regent pack. The council finally decreed the land in question should go to the Regent pack. But with all things political, it took months to sort out.

When he returned to see Rose, she was eight months pregnant with Emma. He decided he couldn’t risk bringing Rose into his pack. Brian had missed out again and Marcus knew the blame wouldn’t fall far from his door. So, he returned home to his pack for a few weeks to keep a low profile. He explained to Rose without giving away too much, that his work was dangerous and he couldn’t risk bringing her and the baby into it, but he would always provide for them and visit when he could. Rose was happy with the arrangement. She didn’t want to be tied down, as she called it. A week later, Marcus returned to visit and found Rose in labor. He rush her to the hospital, but due to complications, Rose died moments after Emma’s birth. So Marcus took Emma to a children’s home and placed her in their care. He explained how he watched over her as she grew up and how he had wished more than anything that things could be different, but he wasn’t risking another child. He couldn’t have gone on if he had lost Emma too.

Emma reached over and squeezed his hand. The tears in her eyes shone in the kitchen lights and she took a deep breath before speaking.

“I believe your son is alive. Brian bragged to me about killing your mate and leading you to believe your son died, too. But he really took him and affiliated him into the St James pack, therefore severing your connection.

When I asked who he was, he said the only person I cared about. This person doesn’t know what happened, he always wished he had different parents. The ones he had weren’t nice people. He hasn’t spoken to them in years. After realising who he was, I checked your file and looked at your mate’s photo, I printed it off along with this one of your son,” Emma said, pulling two photos out of her back pocket and placing them on the table.

Two sets of the same brilliant blue eyes stared back and two identical smiles grinned up at Marcus.

“Who is he?” Marcus asked whilst running his thumb over the photos.

“He is called Craig, he is my best friend,” Emma replied.

Epilogue

Three weeks later Emma sat impatiently waiting for Craig and Scott to arrive. They had decided to wait and tell Craig about Marcus when he arrived. Emma rubbed her hand over her belly, wishing the nausea would settle, but she knew it would be a while before it did, probably a few months. She had only just found out that morning, than ks to a home pregnancy test. She planned to tell Mike this evening. Emma knew he would be as thrilled as she was. But, getting Craig settled in and telling him about Marcus would have to come first.

A DNA test to confirm Craig was her brother and Marcus’ son would be performed, but after seeing the photo of Marcus’ mate, it was a foregone conclusion. Emma was so excited. She had gained a mate, a dad, two brothers, a cousin and a grandmother, all in a few short weeks. And now, in a few months, a baby. Life had taken a turn for the better when Emma met her Alpha.
