I reached over and lifted the phone off the hook, gave Dan the smallest of smiles, and pushed down the disconnect button, eliminating some man on the other end who was shouting hello. Then I picked the receiver up again and laid it on the table.

“My, my,” Dan said. He chuckled and reached out for my hand. I gave it to him willingly. Together, we went up the stairs.
