A Selective Bootleg CD Discography

The official discography of the E Street era—the seven studio albums and a ghastly 3–CD live anthology—has been significantly expanded since 1998, with the release of
Tracks
,
The Essential
Bruce Springsteen
(with a bonus disc of rarities), a complete Hammersmith 1975 show, and the 2–CD set of
Darkness
outtakes,
The Promise
. But there remains a substantial body of live and studio recordings from the years 1972–85 available only on bootleg CD (and, as an inevitable by-product, download). Since I remain a fan of the artifact, and since a bootleg CD is likely to exist somewhat longer than some of the website links which afford fans the opportunity to download these precious, unauthorized moments, I have provided a subjectively selective list of recordings that will help fill in the blanks, affirming to anyone with ears the E Street Band’s incontestable status as the most consistently great live American rock band of the seventies!

Studio CDs:

Note: Of the four classic vinyl bootlegs of Springsteen studio outtakes—
The Demo Tapes
,
Fire On
the
Fingertips
,
E Ticket
and
Son You May Kiss the Bride
—all save
E Ticket
have been issued on CD (in
Fire On the Fingertips
’ case, as the equally splendid
Forgotten Songs
). However, the
Son You May Kiss
the Bride
CD should be avoided at all costs, being simply a very poor transfer of the vinyl version. The release of
Tracks
and the unauthorized
Prodigal Son
has rendered
Fire On the Fingertips
largely redundant. As for
E Ticket
, all the tracks can be found on the 2–CD Godfather set,
Running Out of
Innocence
. Of the nineteen volumes of
Lost Masters
issued from the Mike Batlan tapes in 1996, a significant number were taken from band
rehearsals, recorded with a condenser mike on a ghetto blaster, and probably qualify as “for completists only.” The few highlights of these rehearsal tapes do, however, appear on the second of the two 2–CD
Essential Lost Masters
anthologies, issued at the same time by Labor of Love. As for the recent 6–CD set of
Darkness
outtakes issued by Godfather—
The Unbroken Promise
—it probably represents overkill, and I have preferred an earlier collection on the inestimable E Street label. In the anthology department, for all its failings in presentation,
The Genuine Tracks
remains the best one-stop shop of Springsteen rarities—live and studio—available in the netherworld of boots. Suffice to say, equally essential is some version of the 1979 single-album he aborted,
The Ties That Bind
; if not the bootleg CD, then the recent upgrade available online.
