Devon suddenly heard alarm bells in her head. Something about his actions felt off and her adrenaline spiked. “But—”

Matthews bit into her neck dangerously close to her throat and sucked. She hit a climax and clawed her nails into his shoulders with her need. Another orgasm rolled over her, but fear still prickled along her spine.

“Don’t…” she tried.

He bounced her harder each time he drank her in. “Shhhh.” Matthews nibbled down to her breasts and up again until his teeth pierced the other side of her neck.

“Stop…” Her protests fell away as she screamed while another orgasm rolled over her, then another, until she gasped for enough air to scream again. Devon came one last time before crashing against his chest in a mixture of ecstasy and fear, both feelings intertwined into one incredible sensation.

“Devon, hey, you need to come drink something,” Matthews called to her, but his voice sounded far away.

“Huh?” She blinked her eyes open, unaware of how much time had passed. “What happened?” He had laid a blanket on top of her and folded her clothes neatly by her feet.

“Come on. Get up and dressed.”

“I’m achy all over.” Devon rubbed her forehead with one hand as she reached for her outfit with the other. Her mind felt foggy, and she took her time getting her clothes on.

“I’m sorry I didn’t ask for your permission.” He moved past her to the fridge, grabbed the orange juice, and fixed her a glass.

“Whenever I donate blood, I get cookies too.”

“I’m not in a joking mood.” He reached up into the cabinet, brought down a package of crackers, and handed it to her.

“Why are you on edge?” Devon took out a handful and began eating them.

“You stir up emotions I thought were gone. I gave into a part of me I don’t usually listen to, and I took what I wanted without asking. I’m very sorry.” He shook his head as if aggravated with himself.

“Did I do something to anger you?” She took a sip from the glass and watched him.

“No, you just asked a lot of questions I’m not used to answering.” He leaned back against the fridge. “I’m sorry I put you in such a position.”

“Did you think I would say no?” She downed the liquid and set the glass down carefully. “What is the real issue?”

“I didn’t consider your feelings at all… until you asked me to stop.”

“What do you mean?” She nibbled a cracker and studied his face as she chewed.
What is he not telling me?

“You asked me if my actions were planned and if I meant to scare you.” He ran his hand through his hair. “I did what I wanted, and I didn’t give a damn about your feelings or the result.”

“Are you mad at me?” Devon felt her lower lip tremble as he moved his glass to the dishwasher, then approached her. She took several more crackers even though they tasted like cardboard and stuffed them in her mouth. She focused on chewing and swallowing instead of on the awkward silence as he stared at her.

“Am I mad at you? Devon, why would you think…?” Matthews sighed and shook his head again. “No, but you should be angry with me.”

“Well, I’m not, but I should get home.”
What if he hadn’t stopped?
“I’m not leaving for good,” she clarified. She grabbed her shoes, slipped them on, and walked slowly to the front door.

“Text me when you get home so I know you’re safe.” He leaned down to kiss her cheek then laid another on her forehead. “I do care very much about you.”

“I will and I know. I mean… I do too.” She hugged him quickly, turned, and rushed down the steps as fast as her current state would allow. If she kept her eyes on him she would not want to leave. “Thank you for all of the information!” she called over her shoulder. “Good-night!”

“You’re welcome and good-night,” he called after her as she reached the end of the driveway.

Devon nearly ran home, even though her head still ached. The events of the night replayed in her head and she realized she had fallen head over heels for Matthews—a thought terrifyingly wonderful. His concern for her well-being trumped his want for her blood, or so she hoped. Otherwise their relationship would have a hell of a learning curve.

Chapter Four

It had been almost three full weeks since the last time Matthews drank from her, and he had been in her every thought since then.
Why am I obsessed?
Her thoughts drifted to the earth-shattering sex they had. Their encounter had nothing to do with her homework.

Devon looked over at the laptop screen. She desperately wanted to know his first name. She’d tried to ask him but he’d laughed it off.

She pulled up the school website and clicked on the directory. Would it be some frilly name like Ricardo? Maybe it was very gothic like Raven. Devon scrolled down to the ‘M’ section, then let go of the mouse.
Why is this so hard?

“What’re you doing?” Lucy’s voice piped up over her head and she jumped.

“I’m doing homework.” Ever since their fight she had kept her distance. The wolf didn’t get along with the vampire. How ironic. Devon bit the inside of her cheek. She really wanted to know more about Lucy’s obvious issues with Matthews.

“Is it from Professor Fang-a lot?” Lucy grabbed the mouse and scrolled down. “What do you need to know?”

“It involves my final project for his class.” Devon gently pushed her chair out, which caused her friend to drop the device and move.

“He’s a bloodsucker who doesn’t deserve rights. Now your project is done.”

“You don’t sound like my friend who used to preach about discrimination. You sound like a hypocrite.” She picked her laptop up and moved it to the kitchen counter. On the screen she saw his face with the initial ‘D’ instead of a name.

“I’m going to make us a drink.” Lucy reached up into the cabinet and set out two short glasses.

“I’m fighting so hard to stay sober. Can you not do this now?”

“One drink won’t kill you. I’m sorry I haven’t been around much.” Lucy continued to open up several different types of alcohol and mix-ins. She fixed the cocktails and set one in front of her friend. “Besides, if you’re just a blood doll, you should live a little.”

“You love raw meat and change into a fucking dog on occasion. Where do you get the right to judge?”

“I’m not a dog!” Lucy set her jaw and her eyes shined amber.

“Then stop acting like a bitch.” Devon took the drink despite her statement and downed it in one chug. “Besides, a blood doll is some stupid girl who donates to a vampire in return for sexual favors.” It tasted strong, but one drink would be okay.

“I’m sorry.” Lucy’s eyes faded back to her normal shade. “I know this isn’t some movie where the wolves and the vampires are in a war over a stupid doe-eyed human.”

“Are you implying I’m just a stupid human?” Devon downed the second drink and a large rush of heat waved over her.

“No. I’m not saying that. Usually werewolves stay away from vampires. We want our own space to run, and hunt, and be free. Vampires in turn usually stay away from werewolves. They are lone creatures. And it’s never mattered about you being human.” Lucy fixed two new drinks.

“Wow, someone remembers Supernatural 101.” Devon pulled her hair up into a ponytail. “Is it hot in here?”

“Here, cool off.”

Another drink appeared in front of her and she took several large gulps. Her head felt dizzy all of a sudden, and she reached her hand towards the breakfast stool. Devon further misjudged the distance as she knocked over the chair. The room spun over her head and she closed her eyes.

“Lucy, I don’t feel right!” Devon doubled over as sweat poured down her face like tears.

“Maybe you shouldn’t chug alcohol.” Lucy knelt down next to her.

“What?” Devon’s vision blurred and she reached up towards her friend. “Help me.”

“I’m helping.” Lucy pulled her to her feet, then let go. “Friends help each other.”

“This is serious!” The room tilted and Devon crashed to the floor. “Something is wrong!”

“Letting some vamp suck on you is wrong. He doesn’t have your best interest in mind, like me.”

“You’re out of your mind.” Devon crawled to the stairs but only managed to get up three.

“I want you to tell him to fly away. I’ve been there for you for when no one else has.” Lucy followed her.

“Please help me to bed?” Devon pulled herself up two more stairs.

“I just want you to remember all I have done.” Lucy lifted her easily. She carried her to her room and set her on the bed. “I’ll always be here.”

With that Lucy left the room and shut the door behind her. Devon wanted to ask her what the hell she meant, but the room spun in circles and she passed out.

Devon felt blindly around her bed for a pillow, then curled herself around it. She had an awful pain in her stomach and her head felt like it weighed a hundred pounds. Mumbled voices carried up the stairs but before she could pull herself up, the door exploded into dozens of splintered pieces. Matthews and Lucy stood in the doorway, then entered slowly.

“Are you okay?” Matthews reached her bed first, closely followed by her friend.

“Um. I think so.” Devon retched suddenly and threw up all over the sheets. “Oh gross!” Lucy thrust a garbage pail at her and Devon got sick again.

“I thought something happened. What did you do last night?” Matthews had a catch in his voice and she wondered how much trouble she was in.

“I don’t know.” Devon managed to sit up and pull the sheets off her bed. The room spun suddenly and she crashed back into the mattress.

“Did you go out?” Matthews held his hand out to her but Lucy pushed in front of him.

“Come on, I’ll help you get cleaned up.” Lucy helped Devon to her feet.

“I expect an explanation, Lucy. I’ll be—”

“I don’t have to explain anything to you!” Lucy’s eyes flamed amber as she snapped at Matthews and interrupted him.

“You’ve got no idea what I’ve gone through to protect you and your pack.” Matthews set his jaw as he looked Lucy over, as if deciding what to say. “I’ll call Ben and he can set you straight. Take care of Devon then help her downstairs.” He stormed out of the room and she heard his steps echo loudly after him.

“Can you please stop?” Devon grumbled as Lucy led her into the bathroom and started the shower for her.

“I’m sorry, okay? When my alpha gets here I’m going to be in a ton of trouble.” Lucy helped her get the nasty clothes off. “I’ll go start the laundry. Just take it easy.”

“Why will you be in trouble? Please tell me what happened. I don’t really remember.” Devon stepped inside the tub but the door slammed shut. “Lucy?”

Lucy had left without answering.

“Shit!” She vaguely remembered an argument and some drinks, but only one or two.
What the hell happened?

She took the time to wash her hair and herself but still felt shaky and decided to cut her shower short. Lucy had a lot of explaining to do.

* * *

Devon felt tension in the air as she descended the steps and sank down into the couch next to Lucy. She grabbed a few throw blankets and wrapped them around her body. She felt unusually cold and drained of energy.

“Do you feel any better?” Matthews stood near the small fireplace across the room with his arms crossed and a scowl on his face.

Ben Brinkham, the alpha of Lucy’s pack and technically the equivalent of a father-in-law to Lucy, stood next to him but said nothing.

“I’m still queasy and tired.” Devon leaned her head on the armrest.
Why is Ben here right now?
She had met him before but his presence confused her.

“We were in the middle of something.” Matthews leaned back against the fireplace. “You said your boys didn’t mean to hurt her, but three wolves on one little girl is a bit extreme,” he snorted. “I’ve heard some shit from you over the years, but your story takes the cake.”

“Whether you believe it or not, I swear it’s the truth. I wouldn’t lie to you, Don.” Ben shook his head.

“What is Don short for?” Devon had waited too long to let such an opportunity pass.
Now I’ll know his first name!

“Donovan.” He gave her the satisfaction of an answer and continued, “You’ve never lied before.”

“I’m upset that she’s been hurt, Don. I want to see her get better; the poor little thing has been through enough this year.” Ben scratched his chin. “Those boys think they can handle you, but I know better.”

“You and I haven’t fought in years. Don’t make me remind you which one of us is stronger,” Matthews’ tone—
no, Donovan’s tone,
she reminded herself with a smile—didn’t change but sounded like a lightly veiled threat.

“You don’t have to brag in front of Devon. I’m well aware of that fact.” Ben nodded then turned his attention to Lucy. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

“I didn’t have anything to do with this,” Lucy replied confidently, though she twisted a ring around her finger as she spoke, showing uncertainty.

“She’s been lying for weeks, but I don’t have the damnedest idea why,” Donovan cocked his head to the side. “Could you shed some light here?”

“It’s too bad some rumors aren’t true, or I’d shine the whole fucking sun,” Lucy snipped, but her face looked scared rather than angry.

“You obviously didn’t tell your alpha what happened the other day, or you wouldn’t be speaking so crassly. Your bitch attacked me out in the open unprovoked.” Donovan dropped his arms. “Unprovoked,” he repeated.

“What?” Ben growled under his breath. “Come here, Lucy.”

“Yes, I did attack him, but he let it go until now. I should have told you myself.” The little wolf dropped her head but did as he’d commanded.

“What is your problem? You’ve had an issue since the moment you heard me mention my Supernatural class. What is the deal?” Devon threw the blankets off her body. “Why did you tell me to stay away from him?”

“I can’t get into it right now. I’m really sorry.” Lucy rubbed at her eyes. “I’ve been making bad choices for good reasons, but I can’t explain it right now.”
