Kara didn’t know how she’d gotten through the last two days. On Monday Dante had disappeared into Ed Tate’s office after her lunch with him and they were still in there when she’d left work.
Yesterday Dante had sent her a text message asking for her private e-mail, and she’d given it to him, but she hadn’t heard from him since. Now it was the end of their workday on Wednesday and she was getting ready to leave the office. She clicked into her e-mail one last time, hoping for some sort of message from him, even just a confirmation that they were still on for tonight.
There was nothing new in her in-box.
Damn it.
She blew out a breath and closed her e-mail, shut her computer down.
Why was she acting like some starstruck teenager? She’d never been the kind of woman to wait by the phone—or the computer—for a man. Even with Jake. One of the reasons why he’d been so drawn to her, he’d told her early in their relationship, was her independence. He’d liked that he’d had to pursue her, that she didn’t always have time for him.
Maybe she was making things too easy for Dante. Maybe she should pull back a bit. Tell him she was busy tonight and couldn’t make it after all.
She knew damn well she wasn’t about to do that. She couldn’t wait to see him. She was practically trembling all over with need. The need to see him. For him to touch her. Simply to be with him again.
Ridiculous
.
But she couldn’t stop herself.
With a sigh she pulled on her trench coat, picked up her purse and walked into the hallway. She couldn’t help but peek at Dante’s closed office door on her way to the elevator.
So he was still working. Good to know.
Her cell phone went off and she answered it without looking at the caller ID. Her gaze was still glued to his door at the end of the long hall.
“Hello?”
“Kara. Did I catch you before you left the building?”
Dante. Her stomach melted, her legs turning to liquid. The same need that was instantly warming between her thighs.
“Hi. Yes, I’m still here,” she told him. “I was just leaving.”
“Don’t.”
“Um . . . okay. Are you working late?”
“Staying late, maybe. Is anyone else still here?”
“Yes, a few people.”
“Ruby?” he asked.
“No, she left about an hour ago. Why?”
“Because I want you to come to my office.”
“Now?”
“Yes, Kara. Now.”
There was no arguing with that tone. She didn’t want to. And she understood he wasn’t planning to go over case files with her. She swallowed.
“Okay. I’ll be right there.”
She glanced around the office. Gary’s door was open and she could see him in there, talking with his law clerk.
She took in a breath and moved back down the hall toward Dante’s office. And nearly bumped into Theresa, who was coming out of her own office, pulling on her coat.
“Kara, you’re working late?”
“Oh no. Well, maybe. I just . . . need to check something.”
“Want me to hold the elevator for you?”
“What? No. No, thanks. I don’t want to keep you waiting. It may take me a few minutes.”
“Okay. See you in the morning.”
“Good night.”
She walked into her office, counted to thirty, peeked out to make sure Theresa had gone. She felt like a kid sneaking around after school, which was oddly exciting. But the excitement had everything to do with Dante.
Dante
.
Another small rush of need washed over her as she moved across the hall to his door, opened it and slipped through, shutting the door quietly behind her.
He was sitting behind his desk, handsome as hell in his black suit, his dark blue shirt striking against the golden brown of his eyes. A slow smile lit his face, and he nodded at her.
“Take your coat off, Kara.”
No greeting. Just that simple command.
She loved it.
She slid her coat from her shoulders and laid it down on the brown leather sofa against one wall, set her purse next to it.
“Come here,” he said quietly.
He watched her as she crossed the room. She could feel her body heating up beneath his penetrating gaze. She licked her lips, approached his desk.
“You look great in these tight skirts you wear,” he told her, his tone all smoke and heat. “That sexy, businesswoman look. It suits you.” He stood, moved in closer, making her breath catch. “And it makes your ass look superb. But I want a better look.”
He wrapped his hands around her waist, turned her until her back was to him.
“Good,” he said, his tone low. “Now bend over and brace your hands on the desk.”
She found herself doing it, her mind emptying out at an alarming rate.
Don’t think. Can’t think now . . .
“Beautiful, Kara. Perfect. The curve of your ass in this skirt is . . . perfect.”
He moved in close behind her and slid his hand over her hip, then her bottom. She could feel the heat of him through the soft, fine wool of her skirt. She was going wet already, her sex a dark throbbing between her legs.
He leaned over her until his breath was warm on her cheek. He whispered, “Hold still for me now.”
One sharp spank and she gasped.
“Did I surprise you?” he asked her. “You should have known what I was going to do when I bent you over the desk.”
“There are still people in the office,” she said, her voice sounding small, barely a protest at all.
“Yes. But that only makes it more exciting.”
“I didn’t lock your office door behind me.”
“No one will come in. You have to trust me, Kara. Do you trust me?”
“Yes,” she whispered.
She did. She had to. She was helpless already against the onslaught of desire. Drowning in it.
“Good. Very good.”
He smacked her again, the sensation dulled a bit by the fabric between his hand and her ass.
“Oh!”
“Shh, Kara,” Dante whispered to her. He moved her hair aside and laid a kiss on the back of her neck, making her shiver. “Jesus, your skin is so hot. I have to touch it. Touch you . . .”
She felt him move back for a moment as he lifted her skirt, sliding it up around her waist.
“Ah, I should have known you’d be wearing a thong under that tight skirt. I love the way it looks with the boots. Someday I’ll have to have you in nothing but these boots.”
She was shaking even before he touched her. Then he smoothed his palm over her bottom, and she went soaking wet. She had to grip the edge of his desk, forcing herself to hold still.
He kept moving his hand over her bare flesh, the sensation soft and sweet. Yet she yearned for that harder touch.
“Dante, please . . .”
“Eager, beautiful girl? I like that. But you’ll have to wait until I’m ready. Take a breath, let it out. And wait.”
She moaned quietly. He laughed, a small wicked chuckle. He kept stroking her skin—with his palm, with his fingertips. It was wonderful. It was torture.
“Just sink into my touch,” he told her. “Keep breathing. Yes, that’s it.”
She tried to do as he said. And after a few moments she found herself doing it. Sinking. Drifting. Her eyes closed.
The sharp smack on her bottom made her flinch. Then pleasure flooded her body, her sex. Pleasure and intensity and the dark scent of him surrounding her. She found herself surging back into him.
Another low chuckle from him. “I love that you love this. That you respond this way.”
He smacked her again. This time she was braced for it. But it still hurt. Still felt wonderful. Like something she
required
.
He paused to graze her burning flesh with his palm, then smacked again. And again and again. Just hard enough to hurt, for the sting to reverberate through her with small ripples of pleasure.
“God, Dante . . .”
“What is it, Kara?” he asked, one hand going into her hair. He buried his fingers in it, then grasped tightly, right next to her scalp. And even that was purely erotic to her, carrying the sensation deeper into her aching body.
“Please touch me, Dante. Please.”
“I love it when you ask like that. So nicely.” He smoothed his hand over her hip, sliding it around and cupping her mound.
“Ah, Dante . . .”
His voice was a whisper in her ear, his breath warming her skin. “Is this what you need, my beautiful girl?”
Then he slipped his fingers under the lace and right into her wet heat.
“Oh!”
“You’re so damn slick. So wet,” he murmured as his fingers moved, up and down her cleft, probing at her opening, then teasing the swollen folds once more. “Do you like it, Kara? Tell me.”
God, that commanding tone. His hands on her.
“Yes. Yes.”
He found the hard nub of her clitoris and brushed his fingertips over the tip. Her hips moved of their own accord, arching into his touch.
“Ah, that’s good, Kara. Give your need to me. Give yourself to me.”
He pressed onto her clit, and pleasure shafted into her, making her breath come in hard, ragged pants. When he started to roll her clitoris between his fingers, she could barely breathe.
“Dante . . . I’m going to come.”
“Not yet.”
He spanked her with his free hand. One hard smack on her ass and she had to bite her lip to keep from crying out. The sharp sting only made her feel the edge of pleasure more keenly, driving it higher.
“Hang on, Kara. Hang on to it. You can come when I tell you,” he said, desire thick in his voice.
He really started to spank her then, a volley of quick slaps. Not too hard, not too loudly. But the pace drove the sting deeper into her skin. And all the while he worked her clitoris. Everything seemed to fuse together: his hand on her ass, his fingers on her clit, the small, wicked threat of being caught. It was an overload of pleasure she could barely control. But she wouldn’t come until he told her to. She would
not
do it. And that was a different pleasure in itself.
He spanked her harder, and desire took her to a dizzying height. She poised there. Painful. Exquisite.
“Dante . . .”
“Are you ready?”
“God, yes!”
“Come on, then, Kara. Come for me.”
He pressed onto her clit, rubbing, rubbing, his other hand striking her naked flesh. Pain and pleasure joined, merged into a pure sensation that dazzled her, blinded her as she came. Hard spasms, over and over. She bit her lip to keep from crying out, to hold back the scream that wanted to fight its way past her clenched jaw. When it was over she trembled, barely holding herself upright, the edge of the desk biting into her palms.
He kissed the back of her neck, stroked her hair with one hand while he held her upright with the other wrapped around her waist. “That was good, Kara. Amazing. I’m so damn hard for you. But I won’t fuck you here. You’ll have to come home with me. Right now.”
“Now?” she asked, still breathless.
He turned her in his arms, sliding the hem of her skirt back down over her thighs. His eyes were dark, glittering brown and gold. He looked dangerous. Gorgeous.
“Ah, you’re really shaking, baby. Do you know what that does to me?”
She’d come only moments before, yet hearing him say these things to her made her want him.
Need
him. If only he would turn her around again. Bend her over his desk once more and slide into her...
But what he did was almost better. He bent his head and kissed her. Really took her mouth. His lips opened hers, his tongue surging in. Hard and demanding. Slippery and sweet. She thought she could almost come again just from him kissing her. It didn’t make sense. It didn’t have to.
He pulled her in close, crushing her body to his. His erection pressed into her thigh. God, she wanted him. Wanted to touch him as he’d touched her. Wanted to wrap her hands around his thick cock and stroke until he came. Wanted him inside her.
He pulled away. He was breathing hard. So was she.
“I need to get you out of here now,” he told her.
“Yes.”
She was thrilled that he was as eager as she was. He was looking at her in that way he had. Searching. Focused. His dark brows drawn.
“Fuck, Kara.”
“What . . . what is it?”
Was he going to change his mind? Had he remembered another missed meeting? Her heart hammered.
