She was starting to smile. “There’s something I need to say to you.”

Hunter punched 42 and leaned back against the wall of the elevator car. It was all he could do to keep his hands off her, but he sensed Daffy needed to say what she had to say before he swooped in on her. Communication, he was beginning to learn, was the glue that kept love together. That and great sex, he added to himself with a smile.

“Are you listening, Hunter?”

“Oh, yeah.”

“I understand that you may not care about this anymore, but I’ve learned I don’t want to run away from what might be because I’m afraid of what might be.” She looked confused. “Does that make sense?”

He nodded.

But Daffy wasn’t so sure. She’d let her column speak for her. She handed the sheet of paper to him. Watching Hunter from across the space of the elevator car as he read her words, she knew her world would end if he’d changed his mind.

“Come here,” he said, tucking the paper into his back pocket.

Daffy forgot about pride and flung herself against him. “I’ve missed you so much,” she whispered. “If you still want to marry me, the answer is yes.”

Hunter had her in a bear hug. She tipped her chin. Their lips met, and then he said, “If?”

Daffy quit breathing. “Do you still want to marry me?”

He reached behind him and slapped the Stop button on the elevator. The car came to a halt. He let go of her and stuck a hand in his jacket pocket. Drawing out the blue velvet ring box, he said, “I thought you’d never ask.”

He slipped the ring on her finger and kissed her.

“Now that’s romantic,” Daffy said with a happy sigh.
