Sports historians agree that the first professional football game was played at Recreation Park on Pittsburgh's North Side on November 12, 1892, when the Allegheny Athletic Association squared off against their archrivals, the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. It is believed that both teams paid their playersâAllegheny Athletic Association paid all-American guard William “Pudge” Heffelfinger $500 cashâushering in a new era of professional sports in America.
