“Nice to see you too, Sara.” David pulled off the mask and hugged her back. “How are you?”
“Better than you and looking forward to having you back, once the docs clear you.” She frowned at the state of him. “That stab wound looks deep and nasty.”
“It hurts a tad. They won't tell me about Eden. Or Adam. Are they both here and OK?”
“They're both fine. Adam was found about a mile from where they dumped his car. They roughed him up some, but he's already been discharged.”
“And Eden? Did you bring the flowers?”
“Here.” She handed him the bunch of daffodils. “Eden is in the cubicle opposite.”
David eased off the gurney. “I'll be right back, doc, I promise. Don't let that baby out of your sight, Sara.”
“I promise.”
Ignoring the doctor's protests, David took small painful steps to the cubicle opposite. Eden lay on the bed, curled on her side, sobbing.
He crossed to her and put the flowers on the table beside the bed. Sitting awkwardly beside her, he cupped her face. “It's OK,” he said quietly.
Eden almost jumped out of her skin. “David! I thought you were dead.” She hugged him tightly, her sobs soaking into his shirt.
He stifled the cry of pain. “No, not yet. I guess God thinks I'm still a work in progress.”
She looked at him. “You're hurt.”
“A little. You?”
“Marc...”
“Marc's fine, he's with me. Well, with my partner, Sara. I'll introduce you to her properly later, but I have something to ask you first. Well, two something's.”
“What's that?”
He eased her back against the pillows, running his hand through her hair. “The seatbelt in my car. How come you can't do it up?”
“How else was I meant to get you to touch me?” she asked seriously. “I mean, nothing else was working.”
David chuckled and then hissed in pain, clutching his side.
“Sorry.”
“Don't be. The other thing is⦠I'm sorry I hurt you, lied to you. It won't happen again. I love you, can't stand the thought of losing you. Will you marry me? I would get down on one knee, but I don't think I'd be able to get up again if I did.” He held his breath. Her answer would hinge on whether she could forgive him or not.
Eden looked at him. “I'll marry you on one condition.”
“What's that? I'll do anything.” He held her gaze.
“No more daffodils,” she said. “Ever.”
He grinned and picked up the bunch of daffodils from the table. “Guess I blew it then. But I promise, after these, no more daffodils.”
Eden looked at the flowers for a long moment before she lifted her gaze to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.
