Independent Bookstores and the Publishing World

My first choice in bookstores are the ones owned by women, but I am also an avid supporter
of bookstore collectives, which go above and beyond the call of duty in serving their
communities. Bookstore collectives often organize teach-ins, protests and other community
events. I have not been able to find an online listing of nationwide bookstore collectives.
The incredibly popular Slingshot Daily Planner has the most comprehensive listing
of bookstore collectives I am aware of; you can get one at slingshot.tao.ca. Other
collectives can be found by hitting the links at the Lucy Parsons Center (tao.ca/~lucyparsons/).

Feminist Bookstores Index

This listing of women-owned bookstores primarily focuses in the United States and
Canada, but has listings from all over the world. I don’t know how often they update
this site because New York City’s Bluestocking Books is not listed, and they opened
in 1999. igc.org/women/bookstores.

booksense. com

You can enter your zip code to find all the independent bookstores in your area. Keep
in mind that just because a bookstore is locally owned does not make it a proactive
community forum. It was, after all, a female independent bookstore owner in Flagstaff
who abruptly cancelled a scheduled reading by telling me that
Cunt
“did not promote family values.”
