"I can't even guess at their value."

She stared out through the window at the bobbing sunflowers and thought. "I don't know where they are. The last thing Ivory said about them was that a lot of folks thought the blues was the devil's music, but that sometimes the devil's tune could lead a lost soul home."

"What does that mean?" I wanted an answer, not a riddle.

"I don't know for sure. The only thing I know is that those recordings meant a lot more to Ivory than money. They were part of his dream."

"When was the last time you saw them?"

"About a year ago."

"And he never mentioned them again?" I was astounded. Obviously neither Ida Mae nor Ivory had a clue how valuable those recordings might be.

"He said he'd cast them on the water hoping they'd multiply, but that it might turn out to be pearls before swine. That's the last I heard."

I knew instantly where the recordings were. "Thank you, Ida Mae." I stood up, almost running from the room. "I'll be in touch."

On the way to the courthouse.
I
used the cell
phone Tinkie had badgered me into getting, to call an old friend, country diva Krystal Brook. It took Krystal three phone calls and ten minutes to get me an estimate of the value of those recordings. Between eight and ten million dollars.

I was still in sticker shock when I hurried down the jail aisle toward a waiting Emanuel Keys.

"Did Mama send you with the bond money?" he asked. "Is she getting me out of here?"

"Where are those recordings?" I watched him closely. Confusion was quickly followed by gloat when he realized what I was talking about.

"They're in a place where no one will ever hear them. That music is a sin. I'm ashamed that my daddy and the others were playing and singing with that rockabilly white man." His voice grew bitter. "You should hear them, laughing and cutting up like they're
brothers.
"
His mouth twisted. "It's disgusting."

I could barely breathe. What Emanuel had were live sessions, including all the horseplay among the musicians! "Those records are worth millions."

His features grew even harder. "It doesn't matter how much they're worth. Daddy gave them to me. They're mine, and I can do anything I want with them." His smile was an ugly thing to see. "I'm going to burn them. I've been waiting for the perfect moment. A big fire and everyone watching them melt, so they can see that principles are more important than money."

I wanted to reach through the bars and jerk his ears off. "You jackass, don't you realize those recordings are the reason your father is dead?"

I felt a lot of different things, but my primary emotion was complete fury at Emanuel. I no longer believed he'd killed Ivory, at least not physically. What he'd done was worse. He'd set out to deliberately destroy something his father loved.

"So you finally believe Scott killed my father." His breath was short. "Scott asked Daddy more than once what happened to those recordings. Scott probably killed him because he wouldn't say what he'd done with them."

"Who knew you had them?" I had no interest in his theories about who killed Ivory. It hadn't been Scott, but I did believe that whoever killed Ivory did it in an attempt to get those recordings.

"You still don't believe--"

"Shut up and listen to me." I had to clench my hands at my sides to keep from reaching through those bars and grabbing any part of his anatomy that would give pain. "Someone wants those recordings. They killed Ivory. They may kill Ida Mae if they think she knows where they are. Now tell me where they are."

Emanuel swallowed. "Let me out of here. I'll get them and tell everyone I have them. They can watch as I melt them."

I was so angry, my voice had grown deadly quiet. "I'll make a proposition. You tell me where those recordings are, and I'll prove that you didn't try to kill Scott and me."

"The sheriff will prove that. I don't need you. I was a fool to ever talk to you." He was cornered and mad-- forced to rely on the justice of the white man he hated so much.

"I wouldn't count on Coleman." I stepped back. "The truth of the matter is, no one's hunting very hard to prove you're innocent. Coleman is delighted to have you here, out of harm's way and unable to stir up more trouble. You'll rot in here." I swallowed, knowing that I was defaming Coleman with my lie. "In the meantime, Ida Mae may be the target for someone who wants those recordings bad enough to kill. Again." I started out of the jail. "Live with that, if you can."

"Hey!"

I slowed my pace a fraction.

"Hey, Delaney, come back here and talk to me."

Panic was in his voice, and I felt a stab of satisfaction. "Bite me," I said, almost at the door to the sheriff's office.

"I'll tell you. Come back here."

Those were the only words that could have changed my course. I slowly walked back to stand in front of his cell.

"If you're messing with me, you may find yourself responsible for your mother's death. Where are those recordings, and who all knows about them?"

Emanuel's eyes grew unfocused. "Mama doesn't know where they are. Nobody does but me."

We stared at each other. I wasn't going to try and convince him. He had to decide if his hatred was more important than his mother's safety, or his freedom.

Time passed, perhaps a minute. Then he nodded. "Behind the old high school there's a dirt road. It leads to--"

"Wilbur Ward's house." I knew it well. I'd played hooky from school once or twice, and that was the escape route. Mr. Ward would be sitting on his front porch, rocking, watching us sneak away. He was older than dirt, but he knew how to keep his lip zipped. He'd never ratted on us a single time.

"There's a shed behind his house. In the shed is an old refrigerator. The records are in there."

"In a refrigerator!" I couldn't hide my dismay. With the temperatures in the high 90s, the records would be a blob of melted vinyl by now.

"I pay Mr. Ward's electric bill. He keeps the fridge cool for me."

I blew air out. "I'm going to get them now." I started toward the exit again. "I'll be back."

"Hey! You said you'd get me out of here."

"And I will. As soon as I get those records."

"How are you going to get me out?" He was yelling. "Tell me."

I didn't like Emanuel, but I owed him the truth. "My dog was struck by a vehicle at Scott's house the night the bomb was thrown. Your car was clean."

"Who threw that Molotov cocktail?"

"I'll tell you when I know for certain. The only thing that should concern you is that I know you didn't."

"What are you going to do with those records?"

The man had a one-track mind. "Use them," I said, and I couldn't hide the smile.

"Use them how?" He was growing belligerent again.

"For bait."

Walking out of
the jail through the sheriff's office, I tried to keep my gaze focused straight ahead, but my eyes had a will of their own. They tracked Bo-Peep like prey. Dangerous prey. She was the proverbial mouse with fangs. She was leaning against the closed door of Coleman's office. The pose she struck was provocative and proprietary.

"You can't go in there," she said.

"Are you having to lock Coleman in his office so he can't escape you?" I kept walking.

"You screwed up real bad," she said so softly I had to stop to hear her.

"I believe this is the pot calling the kettle black."

She frowned. "I'm just pointing out that you could have had Coleman for the asking. You were too stupid to ask." She cocked her right hip out a little higher and her skirt hiked up a little more. Another inch, and what Aunt LouLane delicately referred to as "possible" would be on display.

I had a lot on my plate, but suddenly Bo-Peep took on top priority. "Have you had your vision checked lately?"

"What are you talking about? My vision is fine." She dropped the pose and struck another, hands on hips. "Don't you dare go around saying my vision is bad."

Boy, I'd struck a nerve. Inbreeding must have caused a lot of ocular problems in her family. "If you can see so good, how come you haven't noticed that gold band on Coleman's left hand?"

She snorted. "Wedding bands don't mean a thing. They slip right off."

"Are you talking from experience?" I'd always figured her for a home-wrecker, but I hadn't realized she was stupid enough to just point-blank admit it.

"There's no such thing as a married man who never strays."

"Coleman is the kind of man who takes his vows seriously. And so do I." The door to Coleman's office opened a tiny amount, paused, then continued to open until he stood in the doorway. Bo-Peep didn't realize he was behind her, because she was staring daggers at me.

"Coleman may think his vows are sacred, but no man is immune to good loving. Didn't your mama teach you anything?" She laughed. "You couldn't get any dumber if you cut off your head."

"There are men who put their word before gratification. I respect that, even if it isn't what I want." I was talking to Coleman now. Bo-Peep was of no importance, only she wasn't smart enough to realize that.

"There was a time when the sheriff was interested in you, but that time is past." She swelled her chest. "Now he's looking at me."

"I don't believe that. He's a married man, and he's not stocking shelves in anybody's store but his own." I handed her a shovel to dig her own grave.

"He isn't any more interested in that wife of his than I am. She's a cow. Nobility won't keep him warm at night. It won't be long before he's tired of trying. I'll be standing right here, ready and waiting."

"I don't think so," Coleman said softly.

Bo-Peep let out a little shriek and whirled around. Eyes and mouth wide, she clapped a hand to her lips.

"Get your things together; you're fired. Leave immediately." He didn't look at me--probably couldn't bear to see the I-told-you-she-was-a-bitch look on my face. He went back into his office and closed the door.

Bo-Peep spun back around to glare at me. "You knew he was standing there all along."

I couldn't help smiling. "I may be dumb, but at least I don't run off at the mouth like a leaky toilet. By the way, you've just been flushed."

Glee rode shotgun
with me as I headed for Wilbur Ward's little cottage. Tinkie was supposed to call me with the results of the tests on Bridge's car and where the
Memphis
entrepreneur was. I was a little uneasy that he hadn't been home when I went by his house.

Before turning behind the high school, I made sure no one was following me. I had become just a little paranoid after being tossed through the air like a sack of Sweetie's dog food.

Wilbur was sitting on his front porch, his pose unchanged for nearly two decades. As I got out of the car, he took his pipe out of his mouth and grinned, exposing one good tooth.

"They never caught ya skippin', did they?"

The man had a memory that would be of interest to science. "Never did."

His grin widened. "I always wondered where you was goin'. Thought I might like to tag along."

The idea made us both grin. "Emanuel sent me over to get something out of that refrigerator in the back."

He nodded. "It'll set my mind at ease once those records are gone. They must be worth a truckload a'money." He waved the hand holding the pipe toward the back. "Help yourself."

I walked through the bare yard to the back of the house. The shed was about thirty feet beyond that, the big refrigerator clearly visible. Emanuel's hiding place was brilliant. No one would ever think of that old rusty fridge.

I opened the door and saw the boxes of black vinyl records, all carefully wrapped in plastic sleeves. Most likely they'd have to be played on 78 speed. Aunt LouLane's old turntable was in the attic. The thought of hearing those recordings was almost irresistible. It took a little grunting, but I finally got them out of the fridge and loaded in the trunk of my car.

Wilbur watched the entire operation and offered no advice. It was a rare quality in a man. I went up to the porch and said my good-byes.

"Come see me," he said. "I'll be here awhile, yet."

Just as I got in the car, the cell phone started ringing. Tinkie had news.

"The tests are back on Bridge's car." I could tell by her tone of voice that the news was bad, for Bridge. "It's animal blood. They said they couldn't tell if it was Sweetie Pie's for positive. They said they didn't run DNA tests on dogs. Have you ever?"

She was indignant that Sweetie didn't get the same treatment as a human. I was right with her. "What did Coleman say?"

"He told me not to jump to any conclusions. He said you'd probably already jumped, but for me to hold you back."

"Very funny. Where's Bridge?"

"Coleman went to bring him in for questioning, but they aren't back yet. The Jag is still impounded, so Bridge doesn't have a car."

"Did Coleman say anything?"
