“I never said that,” Cronin objected. “I said it tasted different, yes.”
“

said it has a power,” Eleanor said. “A power needed to help Cronin. I can’t see to what purpose yet, Alec, but I am sure you will stay human, whether you want to or not. Your blood has more work to do yet.”
“So I’m still the Key?”
Eleanor nodded. “Yes.”
Alec turned to Eiji. “You tasted my blood. Did you see my DNA? Is my lifespan different to what it was before?”
Eiji shook his head slowly, and he smiled. “I still see many years for you. You will be vampire, Alec. I am sure of it. You and Cronin have a millennia in front of you.”
Alec sighed, and the relief that flooded through him was immense. He took Cronin’s hand. “So, you can bite me all you like and it won’t change me?”
“So it would seem.”
“And we have an indeterminate length of time before whatever we need my blood for happens, right?”
“A few months,” Eleanor said. “No more than a year.”
Alec laughed and dragged Cronin back toward the bedroom. “You guys might wanna get yourselves so
me earplugs or something,” he said, knowing they’d all hear everything he was about to do to Cronin. “We’re gonna be a while.”
