“I don’t know...what’s wrong with me,” Brendan said. “I don’t know why I’m crying like this. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay,” Marc said. He pulled back and wiped Brendan’s tears with his thumbs. “It’s crushing, the first time a family member hurts you like this as an adult. I know, Brendan. Sweetie, this sucks. But you’re gonna get through it. I promise.”

Brendan sat up and wiped his eyes with the palms of his hands. “I just can’t believe he would do this. He hasn’t returned my calls. And now this. He’s my
father
.” His lip quivered, and Marc grabbed him in a hug again.

“I know,” he said softly, rocking Brendan gently back and forth. “When my father found out I was gay, he didn’t speak to me for two years.”

Brendan looked at Marc. “Really?”

Marc nodded. “It was like getting punched in the face.”

“Yeah.” Brendan laughed. “But I guess we should be downstairs entertaining our guests. I just needed a moment. When Cal told me, it hurt so bad, I couldn’t stop it.”

“The guests can wait a few more minutes,” Marc said, his fingers drifting to Brendan’s zipper.

“Marc!” Brendan snickered. “Not now.”

Marc straddled Brendan on the bed and pushed him down flat, unzipping his jeans and tugging them down to his knees, taking his boxers with them. “Yes. Now.”

When Marc’s hot mouth came down on his cock, Brendan gasped, fingers gripping his short hair. “Marc...what are you doing? We have a house full of people!”

Marc sucked him deeper and Brendan grew and hardened in his mouth, the suddenness of the action sending intense bolts of pleasure through his cock. Brendan lifted his head, pushing Marc back. “What are you doing?” he asked, his voice breathy.

Marc looked up at him, smiling. “I’m making it all better,” he said, and sucked him in again.

Groaning, Brendan fell back onto the pillows, helpless to fight the sensations Marc’s tongue elicited as he swirled it around Brendan’s dome, fingers stroking his balls. He slowly glided Brendan’s cock out and took a breath. “Come in my mouth, baby.”

Brendan gasped. “Are you sure?”

They’d both recently gotten tested so they could stop using condoms, but he’d never done
this
yet, never let himself go in Marc’s mouth. He wasn’t sure if he should, if Marc truly wanted that.

Marc climbed up his body and kissed his lips hard, then looked down at him. “I’m going to draw these bad feelings right out of you. Like sucking out the poison.”

“You’re supposed to spit poison out after you suck it,” Brendan said.

“Don’t ruin my metaphor with your logic. I love you. Now lie back, and let me swallow your cum.”

Brendan’s cock twitched in response to Marc’s words and he bit his lip, nodding.

Marc slid down and Brendan groaned, lifting his hips as his cock was enveloped once more with that warm, wet mouth and tongue. “Oh God,” he whispered.

Brendan had never been an exhibitionist, but the fact that a houseful of people were just downstairs intensified his pleasure, making this feel naughty and forbidden. He gripped Marc’s hair, thrusting his cock deeper.

Marc grabbed Brendan’s ass and squeezed, his mouth bobbing faster, increasing the suction until Brendan’s breathing became erratic and his balls tightened up. “Marc...I’m about to...”

Marc deep throated him, the hot tightness around his shaft pushing him over the edge, and Brendan exploded. Marc’s suction milked him as he came, and the ecstasy was so intense Brendan had to bite his own fist to keep from screaming. Marc swallowed him down until finally the orgasm ebbed and Brendan had to push his mouth off as he grew too sensitive.

Taking a deep breath, Marc lifted his head. He wiped his mouth, smiling. Shuffling up the bed, he leaned over and grasped the sides of Brendan’s face. “Better?”

Brendan laughed, nodding. “Way better.”

“Good. I can’t stop people from hurting your feelings, unfortunately. And life isn’t always going to be easy. But we’ve been to hell and back, and we love each other. And that makes us unbreakable, okay?”

Brendan sighed. “Okay.”

Marc climbed off him. “So what do you say? Want to go downstairs and enjoy our party?”

“Yeah. I do.”

When they got back downstairs, most of the guests were gathered in the living room drinking and talking, and Brendan heard Cal’s deep laughter as he stood with a huddle of Marc’s cop friends. All of the subsequent groups had become one large mixing pool of festivity, drunken, happy voices shouting over each other.

Marc wrapped his arms around Brendan from behind and gave him a squeeze, holding him. He kept his arms linked around Brendan’s waist while they listened to Terry Ann regale them with tales from the Providence office and Jeremy’s inimitable ego.

Slowly, Brendan’s happiness returned, and it wasn’t lost on him that he was standing in a room full of people while his boyfriend casually yet openly embraced him, and no one seemed to care. It felt good, and normal, and right, and while the pain of his father’s rejection hadn’t completely ebbed, it couldn’t compete with the feel of Marc’s arms around him, the twinkling strands of festive holiday lights, or the laughter of friends.

Marc was right. They had been to hell and back. But they
were
back, and that was what mattered. And Brendan didn’t intend to take it for granted.

All his life he’d been told how fortunate he was, how humble he should be to have such blessings. But only now did he feel truly thankful, a deep, satisfying gratefulness for all he had.

This was where his heart was, and this was where he lived. It might have taken tears and heartache, bumps and bruises, even moments of sheer terror to get here, but it was a construction of his making—his and the man he loved. He’d earned it. And from this moment on, the people on the outside could make their choices to accept it or not. But he wouldn’t compromise this life he’d built to please anyone else.

Because regardless of where he’d come from, and what others expected him to be, it had taken him until this moment to know who he really was. And where he belonged.

Brendan was home. And he aimed to stay there.
