The door to the bride's dressing room was still closed, and since her parents weren't in the hall yet, that meant they were still inside with Violet. Eliza considered popping in there as well, but before she could play around with that idea, the main doors to the church flew open.

And in walked Kane.

Eliza's heart did a little flip-flop. Until she saw his expression. His face was rock hard, and if anyone had doubted he was a cowboy, there was no way to doubt it now. His jeans were worn and snug in all the right places. Ditto for his blue shirt. He pulled off his black cowboy hat when he spotted her and strode toward her, his boots thudding on the wooden floor.

“Uh, you're not here to try to stop the wedding, are you?” Patrick asked.

Kane frowned as if that were an insult. “No. I'm here to set some things straight.”

That sounded a little unsettling because maybe he was there to let everyone know his side of the lie pact. But if he planned on saying anything else, he didn't do it. Kane went to her, hauled her into his arms and kissed her.

He smelled like cows.

But beneath that, she caught Kane's own scent, too. A scent that stirred every part of her body. Just the way she liked her parts to feel.

Oh, the kiss was so dreamy, and like his scent, it created a flurry of emotions inside her. Heat, yes. Most of all, though, Eliza felt relief. Kane was there, kissing her, and everything was right with the world.

“Is that part of the fake stuff?” Patrick again. “Because we know the two of you were lying about being together.”

Kane ignored that and just kept on kissing her as if trying to convince her of something. But she didn't need convincing of anything right now.

Or maybe she did.

She pulled back, met his gaze and tried to figure out if this was some kind of test on his part. Maybe he was trying to figure out if the attraction was real.

It was.

Because he went back in for another kiss. One that caused her knees to give way. Good thing Kane's arm was around her waist or else she would have slid straight to the floor like a tipped-over cow. He didn't stop this second kiss until Violet and her parents came out into the hall. Judging from the way Violet's mouth dropped open, she was surprised at the display of affection. Her mother, not so much. Eliza and she shared a smile. Her father scowled. It was a mandatory reaction, since it probably wasn't fun for him to see any man kissing his baby girl.

“What's going on here?” her father growled.

Eliza opened her mouth to answer, but Kane beat her to it. “It's true. This all started out as a lie, but it's damn sure not a lie now.”

“Don't curse in the church,” her mother scolded, but she was still fighting back a smile.

“Sorry,” Kane quickly said. “But I hope you heard the part about this not being a lie.” He turned to her. “It's not a lie, is it?”

“No.” Eliza answered as fast as she could, and she shook her head so there'd be no misunderstanding.

The doors behind them opened, and that's when Eliza realized Kane and she had more of an audience than just the wedding party and her folks. Most of the guests had left their seats and were right there, listening. Good. It meant she could clear this up once and for all.

She pulled Kane back to her. “Everything I feel for you is the real deal.”

He smiled. First a happy smile, but it turned a little naughty. It was a naughtiness she recognized, since she'd been on the receiving end of it during their marathon night of sex. He clearly wanted a repeat of that night. And he would get it, after the wedding.

“Yeah, definitely the real deal,” he agreed. “I'm thinking this could be the start of something...” His gaze drifted down to her face. Then to her dress. “...really, really interesting.”

Eliza had no trouble agreeing to that, either. And it didn't have anything to do with the fact that she was dressed like a cow or that Kane smelled like one.

“Are you staying for the wedding?” Violet asked at the same moment her father asked, “Kane, exactly what are your intentions with my daughter?”

Kane smiled again. “Yes,” he said to Violet before looking at her father. “And as for my intentions, well, they're the best kind when it comes to Eliza.”

Eliza figured that meant she was in for all sorts of good things ahead, and she got a sneak peek at one of those things when Kane hauled her back to him and kissed her.
