“Would the world be so peopled if makin’ love wasna pleasurable?” Gordon countered. “What I’d like more than anythin’ else is one of yer kisses. Will ye kiss me, lass?”

“Yes.” Rob closed her eyes and puckered her lips.

Gordon realized she was waiting for him to kiss her. “No, angel. I want ye to kiss me.”

“Verra well,” Rob said, opening her eyes. She leaned close and planted a chaste kiss on his lips.

“Ye didna put any feelin’ into it,” he complained. “I want one with emotion.”

Summoning her courage, Rob covered his mouth with hers. Her lips felt soft and warm on his, her kiss uncertain yet eager.

A jolt of sensation shot through Gordon when he felt the tip of her tongue flicking across the crease between his lips. He realized she was imitating his kiss at the stream that morning.

Unable to stop himself, Gordon wrapped his arms around her and returned her kiss in kind. Taking control, he gave her a long, slow, earth-shattering kiss and put all of the tender emotion he felt for her into it.

“’Twas verra well done of ye,” he whispered against her lips. “Now, what I’d like ye to do is touch me.”

“Touch ye?” she exclaimed, becoming alarmed.

“Just glide yer hand across my chest,” he coaxed, his voice a soft caress. “Or wherever else ye wish.”

Rob stared into his intense, gray gaze. She wanted to touch him, feel his muscles rippling beneath her hand.

Reaching out, Rob traced her fingertips across his naked chest to his shoulder and then down to the powerful muscles in his upper arm. Becoming bolder, she glided the palm of her hand up his arm to his neck and then slid it down his chest, reveling in the feel of the mat of brown hair covering it. As he’d done to her that morning, she gently flicked her thumb across his nipple and smiled when it hardened beneath her touch.

Gordon nearly groaned at the exquisite sweetness of her touch. Her fingers were silken threads sliding seductively across his skin. He held the back of her neck and, leaning close, covered her mouth with his lips.

And Rob responded, returning his kiss in kind.

“Now, I want to touch ye the way yer touchin’ me,” he said in a husky whisper. “May I touch ye, angel?”

“Yes,” she answered.

Slowly, in an effort not to startle her, Gordon pushed the shirt off her shoulders and down her arms. It dropped to her waist, leaving her breasts bared to his heated gaze. With their pink-tipped nipples, her breasts were perfectly formed.

Gordon suffered the urge to suckle upon those irresistible pink peaks but managed to control himself. He kissed her again and, when she sighed against his lips, glided his hand across her breasts and teased her sensitive nipples to aroused hardness.

Rob felt a throbbing heat ignite between her thighs. Her breath caught ragged in her throat, and she leaned into his caressing hand, yearning for more and more of the exquisite sensations he was creating.

“Kiss me, angel,” Gordon whispered, his voice seductively thick with desire.

Rob needed no second invitation. She looped her arms around his neck and pressed her mouth on his, kissing him for an eternity.

“What I’d like to do is remove our clothin’ and lay across the bed while we touch each other,” Gordon said. “Will ye do that with me?”

Rob nodded, but a telltale blush colored her cheeks. The becoming pink traveled down the delicate column of her throat to her breasts.

Gordon kissed her into a daze of breathless desire and then scooped her into his arms. Rising from the chair, he carried her across the room and gently laid her down on top of the fur coverlet. He kissed her hungrily as he pulled the shirt off her body, leaving her naked to his gaze.

Staring down at her, Gordon became mesmerized by her ripe breasts and tiny waist. God had blessed his wife with thighs meant to wrap tightly around him and hips suited for nurturing his seed. Yes, he’d caught glimpses of her beauty before, but the incredible sight of her naked and waiting for him made his knees weak.

Gordon leaned over her and kissed her again while he unfastened his plaid and let it drop to the floor. In an instant he lay down beside her and gathered her into his arms.

“Angel, yer so verra beautiful,” he murmured against her lips as one of his hands stroked the curve other hips.

“Yer beautiful too,” she said on a sigh.

Gordon kissed her slowly and lingeringly as if time had stopped and they had an eternity to do whatever they wished. He intended to take his sweet time with the angel in his arms and coax her into doing his bidding willingly. He knew that this was the most important night of their married life; whatever happened between them in this bed would color their relationship for as long as they lived.

Gordon pulled her against the hard, muscular planes of his body. His kiss became demanding, stealing her breath away.

Responding instinctively to his passionate kiss, Rob entwined her arms around his neck and pressed her nakedness against him. For the first time in her young life, she experienced the exquisite sensation of masculine hardness touching her feminine softness. And she liked it.

“I’m goin’ to love ye, angel,” Gordon whispered. “Ye ken?”

“Yes, Gordy,” she murmured breathlessly. “Love me.”

Gordon smiled with tenderness and claimed her lips in an earth-shattering kiss that lasted forever. Rob returned his kiss with equal passion, and then some. He flicked his tongue across the crease between her lips, which parted for him, and explored the sweetness beyond them. She surprised him by following his lead. Their tongues touched tentatively at first and then grew bold, swirling together in a mating dance as old as time itself.

“Can ye feel the sun’s warmth?” Gordon whispered against her lips.

“Yes.”

“Me, too.”

Rob moaned at his admission. His words tugged at her heartstrings and inflamed her blossoming desire.

Gordon sprinkled dozens of kisses across her temples, eyelids, nose, and throat. His mouth returned to cover hers, and he caressed her silken body from the delicate column other throat to her thrusting breasts to the juncture other thighs. He moved his lips down her throat and then beyond. Capturing one of her pink-tipped nipples between his lips, he suckled upon it, and the throbbing heat between her thighs blazed into an inferno of pleasure.

“So sweet,” Gordon murmured when she moaned against his lips. “Spread yer legs for me.”

Without hesitation, Rob did as she was told. Gordon covered her mouth with his own while he inserted one long finger inside her.

That startled Rob into alertness. Panicking, she opened her eyes and tried to skitter away from his probing finger.

“Be easy, angel,” Gordon soothed her, keeping her imprisoned within his embrace. “I want to make ye ready to receive me.”

He dipped his head to her breasts and suckled upon her sensitive nipples, then inserted a second finger inside her. Judging her accustomed to the feel of it, he began to move his fingers rhythmically, seducing her to his will.

Catching his rhythm, Rob moved her hips with him, enticing his fingers deeper inside her writhing body. And then his fingers were gone.

“Gordy,” she whimpered.

Gordon knelt between her thighs. His engorged manhood teased the dewy pearl of her womanhood, and she moaned at this new torture.

“Look at me, angel.”

Rob opened her eyes and stared at him in a daze of desire.

“One fleetin’ moment of pain,” he promised.

With one powerful thrust, Gordon pushed himself inside her, breaking her virgin’s barrier, and buried himself deep within her trembling body. Rob cried out in surprised pain and clutched him.

Gordon lay perfectly still, letting her become accustomed to the feel of him inside her. Then he began moving seductively, enticing her to move with him.

Instinctively, Rob wrapped her legs around his waist and met each of his powerful thrusts with her own. Suddenly, unexpectedly, she exploded as wave after wave of throbbing sensation carried her to paradise.

Only then did Gordon release his long-denied need. He groaned and shuddered and poured his hot seed deep within her womb.

They lay still for several long moments, their labored breathing the only sound within the chamber. Gordon finally rolled to one side, pulling her with him, and planted a kiss on her forehead.

With her heart shining in her eyes, Rob gazed at him and said, “Ye promised we were only goin’ to touch.”

“And so we did, angel.” Gordon gave her a wolfish grin. “Outside and inside”

Rob cast him a wry smile. “If only I had known the truth aboot this lovemakin’, I would have ridden to Inverary Castle and demanded my due as yer wife instead of visitin’ my uncle in England.”

“Thank ye for the high praise, angel.” Gordon pushed the fur coverlet down from beneath their bodies and then pulled it over them, saying, “’Tis time for sleepin’.”

“I amna tired,” Rob said.

“Verra well, angel. We’ll talk a while.” Gordon gathered her into his arms and apologized, “I’m sorry I dinna have a weddin’ night gift for ye.”

“Ye’ve already given me this ring.” Without worry about him seeing her devil’s flower, Rob held her left hand up and admired the band of gold with its enormous emerald.

“Still, I’d like to give ye somethin’ more,” Gordon replied. “What would ye like?”

Rob rolled over on top of him. Nose to nose with him, she said, “Sunshine, flowers, and the gift of yer smile.”

“They’re yers, angel. For ye and no other.”

“For ye and no other,” she whispered.

Gordon lifted her birthmarked hand to his lips and planted a kiss on her devil’s flower. “Come September, I’ll take ye to court where ye’ll meet the king. We’ll gift each other with luckenbooth broaches, and when our first child is born, we’ll pin the luckenbooth to his blanket. ’Twill bring him good luck and safety in this uncertain world. Edinburgh abounds with hundreds of shops that sell everythin’ from fine jewelry to —”

Glancing down at his wife, Gordon saw that she’d dropped into sleep. He held her protectively close and kissed the ebony crown of her head. Closing his eyes, Gordon joined her in a deep, dreamless sleep.

Gordon awakened early the next morning and inched toward the center of the bed, searching blindly for his wife’s hot little body. It wasn’t there. He opened one gray eye first, and then the other. The bed was empty. Now, where had she disappeared?

And then Gordon heard a noise on the opposite side of the chamber. He rolled over and saw her. Clad only in his white linen shirt, Rob was standing in front of the hearth and cooking his breakfast.

Leisurely, Gordon admired the enchanting picture of his wife at work. Like a dark veil, her ebony mane cascaded to her waist. Through the white linen shirt, he could see the alluring curves of her derriere and her hips.

“I never knew that gentility could boil a pot,” Gordon said in a sleep-husky voice.

Rob whirled around, startled by the unexpected sound of his voice. Her lips formed a perfect O of surprise, and then she smiled. The warmth gleaming at him from the depths other emerald eyes spoke volumes about the tenderness she harbored within her heart.

“I see yer tryin’ yer hand at cookin’,” Gordon said, returning her smile. Then teased, “Will it be edible, angel?”

Rob cocked one ebony eyebrow in a perfect imitation of his now-endearing habit. “I’ve many fine talents of which yer unaware,” she told him.

“I do love surprises,” Gordon replied. “Especially the kind I enjoyed last night. I’d take another helpin’ of that whatever the time of day.”

“Last night was hardly a surprise,” Rob said, but was unable to suppress a smile. “Ye planned it out in that devious Campbell mind of yers.”

“How can ye doubt me?” Gordon asked, feigning offended innocence. He winked at her and added, “I see yer wearin’ my shirt, angel. The style becomes ye.”

“I like its smell.”

“My shirt smells?”

“’Tis yer scent,” she explained. “Mountain heather.”

That made him smile. “Come over here where we can speak without shoutin’,” he coaxed, patting the bed beside him.

Rob looked from him to the bannocks on the girdle over the fire and then held one finger up in a gesture to give her a minute. Grabbing the bannock spade, a long handled implement with a heart-shaped spade at the end, she lifted the bannocks out of the girdle and set them on the cooling rack. Then she wrapped them in small linen squares to keep them warm and moist.

Turning around to face him, Rob smiled as she crossed the chamber. “I found a spot of blood here on the coverlet,” she said, sitting beside him on the edge of the bed, “but I rinsed it off while ye slept.”

“’Twas yer virgin’s blood,” Gordon told her.

“Oh.” Rob blushed a vivid shade of scarlet, a brilliant red that would have shamed a rose.

“So, angel, why are ye up and aboot this early?” he asked, ignoring her embarrassment.

“As yer wife, I am duty bound to cook ye breakfast,” she said primly.

Gordon cocked a brow at her, and his eyes lit with tender amusement. She was the only noblewoman he’d ever bedded who’d considered passing the night in his bed as an invitation to cook for him. All of the others had been determined upon a shopping spree down High Street.
