This paper studied 91 patients with suspected large-bowel obstruction. Of the 79 patients who were thought clinically to have mechanical obstruction, the diagnosis was confirmed in 50 by contrast enema and refuted in 29. Eleven had non-obstructing colonic pathology and 18 patients had pseudo-obstruction. Of the 12 patients who were thought to have pseudo-obstruction before the water-soluble contrast enema, two were shown to have carcinoma of the colon.

A randomised study of 21 patients with acute ACPO in which 11 patients were randomised to receive neostigmine and 10 patients received intravenous saline. The study showed that where the conservative treatment of ACPO fails, intravenous injection of 2.0 mg neostigmine results in rapid decompression of the colon.

A multicentre, prospective, randomised trial comparing subtotal colectomy with segmental resection, intraoperative irrigation and primary anastomosis for left-sided malignant large-bowel obstruction. Although postoperative mortality and length of stay in hospital were similar for both procedures, segmental resection with intraoperative colonic irrigation was superior to subtotal colectomy in terms of stoma rate and bowel function.

This study prospectively evaluated 420 patients who underwent both CT and water-soluble contrast enema in the evaluation of acute diverticulitis. The performance of CT was significantly higher than contrast enema both in terms of sensitivity (98% vs. 92%) and in the evaluation of the severity of the inflammation (26% vs. 9%). Furthermore, contrast enema picked up an abscess in 20 patients compared with 69 patients using CT.
