turret
[Co].
Small tower projecting outwards from the face of a wall and usually higher than the wall itself. Widely used on defensive structures from later prehistoric times onwards.
Tutankhamen
[Na].
One of the last pharaohs of the 18th Dynasty, probably the son of Amenophis IV, he was born around 1345 bc. In 1333 bc he became pharaoh at a young age, but reigned for only nine years until his death in 1323 bc. During this time the capital was returned to
THEBES
and the worship of
AMEN
was re-established. Tutankhamen is well known because his tomb in the Valley of the Kings (KV 62) remained intact until it was discovered by
HOWARD CARTER
in 1922 and entered by Carter and Lord Carnarvon on 4 November that year. Although probably poorer than many of the great long-reigning pharaohs, the tomb nonetheless contained a remarkable treasure (now in the Cairo Museum) and provided much detailed information about the ritual of royal burial.
tutela
[De].
Latin term for the gods who look after or guard a particular place or community.
tutulus
1
[Ar].
A circular bronze ornament worn at the waist by women during the Danish Bronze Age.
2
[Co].
The Latin name for a short length of ditch dug to bar a direct line of approach to the entrance gate of a Roman fort or camp.
tuyère
[Ar].
In metalworking, a tube or refractory material (typically ceramic or stone) linking the outlet from a pair of bellows to the central hearth of a furnace. Air from the bellows is forced through the tuyère in order to increase the heat in a furnace. For this reason, the inner part of the tuyère is often vitrified and may have fuel, slag, and other materials from within the furnace fused to it.
tweezers
[Ar].
A pair of small pincers, usually of a pliable material such as metal or bone, for taking up or pulling small objects or plucking out hairs.
